Abstract
Objective. To investigate the clinical value of lentinan combined with (125)I brachytherapy in the treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer.
Methods. A total of 160 patients with recurrent ovarian cancer admitted at Jiaozhou Central Hospital from June 2009 to October 2015 were enrolled in this study and randomly divided into observation group (80 cases) and control group (80 cases). The control group received chemotherapy. Observation group (80 cases) was treated with lentinan combined with (125)I brachytherapy on the basis of control group, and the efficacy, adverse reactions, and Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) and quality of life scale (QOL) scores of the two groups were analyzed and compared.
Results. After treatment, the levels of CA125, CA199, and CA724 in the 2 groups were markedly lower than those before treatment, and the observation group was lower than the control group (). After treatment, the proportion of CD4+/CD8+ cells and helper T cells and NK cells in the control group remarkably depleted, while the proportion of CD4+/CD8+ cells, NK cells, and B cells in the observation group increased significantly compared to that before treatment, and the level of IgA, IgG, and IgM in the control group decreased, while that in the observation group showed no conspicuous difference compared with that before chemotherapy (). The effective rate of observation group (85%) was higher than that of control group (75%) (). The overall survival of patients in the control group was (16.2βΒ±β2.04) months and that of the observation group was (24.8βΒ±β1.8) months. KPS and QOL scores in both groups were enormously higher than those before treatment, and the observation group was higher than the control group (). The incidence of hemoglobin reduction, leukopenia, aglobulia, granulocytopenia, nausea and vomiting, hepatorenal toxicity, and neurovirulence in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group.
Conclusion. Lentinan combined with (125)I brachytherapy is effective in treating recurrent ovarian cancer, with mild adverse reactions and good tolerance.

Lentinan, prepared from Lentinus edodes (Shiitake mushroom), has been reported to exhibit antiβcoagulant, antiβviral, antiβcancer, antiβ tumor, and antiβcoagulant effects.
This in vitro study showed that Lentinan inhibited oxidative stress induced by benzo(a)pyrene, as shown by the concentrationβdependent reduction in reactive oxygen species in HaCaT cells. In addition, malondialdehyde levels were reduced to 53% of those of cells treated with benzo(a)pyrene without lentinan.
The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase were approximately 18β and 2.7βfold higher in benzo(a)pyreneβtreated cells with lentinan than in those without lentinan. Moreover, lentinan significantly reduced interleukinβ8 and chemokine ligandβ2 mRNA and protein levels, indicating it reduces inflammation and plays an immunoregulatory role. The putative antiβinflammatory mechanism of action is ascribed to the existence of BetaβDβGlucans, which forms the main chain structure of Lentinan.
The results are indicating that Lentinan is capable of protecting skin cells from harmful environmental factors.
Note: it is unsure what the properties of 'Lentinan' were (polyphenols, beta-glucans, processing method) and whether or not this is the same 'Lentinan' (= brand name) used in 1980s research. The original Lentinan (a highly purified compound) was effective only when injected and is not comparable to OTC Shiitake extracts.

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) has been used to improve general health for thousands of years in Asia.
Lentinan is a purified polysaccharide extracted from Lentinula edodes. Ξ²-Glucan is the major bioactive component in lentinan with immunostimulatory effect. The antitumor property of lentinan was reported in 1960s.
Though it has been approved as an adjuvant therapeutic drug both in China and Japan for treating cancers since 1980s, a systematic review of clinical studies of lentinan has not been conducted elaborately.
In this review, over 9474 reported lentinan-associated cancer treatment cases are evaluated and summarized from 135 independent studies in China during the past 12 years (2004-2016) based on CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), VIP (Chongqing VIP Chinese Scientific Journals Database) and Wanfang database.
The 9474 reported lentinan-associated cancer treatment cases include lung cancer (3469 cases), gastric cancer (3039 cases), colorectal cancer (1646 cases), ovarian cancer (183 cases), cervical cancer (130 cases), Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (70 cases), pancreatic cancer (15 cases), cardiac cancer (15 cases), nasopharyngeal cancer (14 cases), duodenal cancer (1 case) and 110 cancer cases with no classifying patient information.
Overall clinical data show solid effect of lentinan on improving the quality of life and on promoting the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation therapy during cancer treatment.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
