I read that Italian dialects are often so removed from one another as to almost be separate languages, making them often mutually unintelligible. If that's true, how much of Italy would learning 'Italian' help me in?
I was reading that Italian dialects from places like Venice, Naples, Florence, Sicily, and so on are often so different from one another as to be almost mutually unintelligible because of Italy's history being mostly dominated by independent city-states. In that case, if I go on Duolingo or to the library to learn 'Italian', what version of Italian am I likely learning and how much of Italy would I likely be comprehensible in?
Edit: Ah, I understand. You all learn standard Italian in school, should have guessed. Thanks!

Swiss Redditors: Which Swiss language or dialect group (Swiss German, Swiss French, Swiss Italian) is most like its standardized counterpart in Germany, France or Italy? My understanding is that there are several dialects of Swiss German and they are mutually unintelligible with Standard German.
Other questions:
- If a person knows a standard version of German, French or Italian, can he or she easily navigate through the corresponding part of Switzerland or even all of Switzerland? And then, to what extent can s/he interact with locals?
- To what extent are the Swiss bilingual (or tri-, quad-, etc.)? Do most Swiss speak their local dialect + the standard language + English + another Swiss language well?
- Are Swiss dialects disappearing or strengthening?
- What is your favorite Swiss joke?
Thank you.

Please help us with translation requests for the regional languages of Italy on Reddit!
Hello, redditors of r/Italy!
I'm u/kungming2, a mod over at r/translator. We're working to make our community the universal place on Reddit to go for a translation, no matter what language people may be looking for.
Would anyone be interested in helping translate any future requests for regional languages of Italy on r/translator? You don't even need to subscribe! We usually get a request for these languages very occasionally, once every several months or so.
We have a notifications system that only sends you a message when a request for a language from Italy comes in.
We already have a lot of people helping out with Italian, so we're looking for people to help us with regional languages and dialects. To help out, just send a message to our subreddit bot at the link below.

Why do linguists consider the languages of Italy to be languages, but Italians (most) consider them dialects?
Examples: Sicilian, Sardinian, Ligurian, Venetian, Emiliano-Romagnolo, Piedmontese etc.

People from Spain often call their national language "Castilian". Why don't people from Italy call their national language "Tuscan"?
In Spain, most locals tend to refer to their country's national language as "Castilian" instead of "Spanish".
Similarly, why don't people in Italy refer to their national language as "Tuscan" instead of "Italian"?

Advice for someone wishing to live in Italy for some time to study the language?
Hi. I'm planning on moving to Italy for many months, potentially over a year, to immerse myself and master the language. If you've done this or know a lot about it, would you pass on some advice regarding how to go about everything, where and how much as well as working while studying and what to expect? Grazie, molto apprezzato!

And since Romanian is the forgotten Romance language, Romanians can join in if they wish.

I'm from Italy and I'd really like to see Joker in its original language at the theater, however it's not airing anymore: what do I do?
Hey guys. I'm from Italy and like I said in the title, I'd like to see Joker in english, at the theater (watching a movie at the theater can't be compared to watching it in streaming, in my opinion). However, the days they've aired it in english were only the first few days after its release, when I hadn't even seen the italian version, and I missed it. What could I possibly do?
I live in the south Italy, and I saw that there are a couple of theaters in the north that are still airing it. However, while I absolutely enjoyed this movie, I'm not THAT committed into moving for hundreds of kilometers just to see a movie. What could I do? One of the ideas I have had is to ask a theater if I could pay them in order to make this happen (I know that could probably cost a lot but it's worth to ask). Or what else do you guys think I could do? Thanks in advance. I'm kind of desperate lol
p.s.: I've already seen it in italian twice
