The Cannubals in Book of Eli (2010) have shaky hands because they have contracted the disease Kuru. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuru_(disease)

Kuru is an actual disease that Cannibals contract by eating human flesh.

TIL Kuru is found among people from New Guinea who practiced a form of cannibalism in which they ate the brains of dead people as part of a funeral ritual. This practice stopped in 1960, but cases of kuru were reported for many years afterward because the disease has a long incubation period healthline.com/health/kur…

Have there been cases of 'Kuru' like prion diseases amongst other communities that have practiced habitual cannibalism?

Mortuary cannibalism amongst the Fore has been cited as the cause of the prion disease 'kuru' amongst the Fore, but of cause, they are not the only group to engage in endocannibalism in a similar manner, for example the Wari' similarly, historically practiced mortuary cannibalism. Has there been similar accounts of prion diseases causing TSE's amongst those communities? What of societies that have practiced exocannibalism?

Are there any reports of Holodomor survivors getting Kuru or other prion diseases?

My thoughts were, many victims of the Holodomor had to cannibalize to survive. Since kuru and prion disease in general can be spread through cannibalism, and the disease can lay dormant for up to 50 years, it seems like an epidemic would spread quickly.

ELI5 : Prion disease like Creutzfield Jacob or Kuru disease, how did it survive our digestive system? Didn't protein get broken down to amino acids?

Prion aka misfolded protein can survive cooking temperature so cooking does not stop the spread of disease via eating human brain, but how does it survive our digestive system?

Protein -> amino acids -> microvili -> blood vessel -> liver -> spread around the body

Did it just reach the brain as it is, without being changed? How??

Anyone else getting incurable disease? (not Kuru)

I've been playing the hell out of Namalsk the past few weeks, and it seems like every character that survives long enough has this problem. I'm not sure what exactly triggers the sickness, but as soon as the icon appears my health will rapidly drain to 75% and not rise above that point. If there are symptoms they don't seem to get worse than coughing and sneezing, but the health debuff makes even a small group of zombies into a real threat. Nothing I can do seems to make the icon disappear or bring my health up. I've actually gone through multiple 12-packs of tetra to no avail. Codeine and resting by a fire were also ineffective. I spoke to my friend who plays this game, and he told me he's been having the same problem. What are we doing wrong? Is this a bug or a feature, and does anyone know how to get rid of it?

Could the guy who swallowed a toe now suffer from kuru (cannibalism disease)? More info in text

https://youtu.be/fSbV-2uL-oU

Basically this is a short documentary about a traditional cocktail made with a real, black, severed toe. The rule is your lips have to touch it and no more, but one guy swallowed the thing whole.

So what I’m wondering is why this individual isn’t suffering from kuru, the cannibalism disease that causes neurodegeneration.

How does the single human prion protein (PrP) cause a number of different diseases (vCJD, fatal insomnia, kuru, etc) as it changes from PrP(C) to PrP(Sc)?

As far as I can tell, the protein is the same (both in terms of the normal and disease-causing isoforms), and the mechanism is the same (misfolded protein converts normal protein in a chain reaction that leads to protease-resistant plaques). So why are there a number of related but distinct diseases associated with the human/mammalian prion protein?

Kuru disease bug?

I just logged in my character today and he's suddenly got a case of the giggles. This character has NOT eaten human flesh nor ever skinned a human, and thus never ate/drank with human blood on his hands. The only meat this character has eaten was from a goat, and the only water it has ever consumed was from a well with clean hands. Is this a bug, or can you contract kuru from other sources now?

How does Hannibal not get Kuru / Prion Diseases from eating human brains?

Now I’m not a doctor or anything but it seems pretty dangerous to be eating human brains, no? Maybe it’s actually more rare than I think but there’s a reason we don’t eat humans (outside the whole moral dilemma). It’s bad for any animal to eat their own - mad cow disease comes to mind. Even if it’s not Kuru I feel that eventually he would get some sort of disease, and considering he’s a doctor, he would know the risks of his eating habits.

It's caused by eating human brains. Some of the syptoms involved becoming emaciated and hysterical laugher. Makes me think that may be what effects the skinny cannibals.

>Only posting this because I can't get it out of my head; the fits that Hillary seems to experience look similar to "laughing sickness" found in Papau New Guinea tribes. "Laughing sickness" is actually Mad Cow Disease, and is contracted through cannibalism (Papau New Guinea tribes are cannibalistic). Could it be that HRC is suffering from this??

I've had this character for a few weeks now. I haven't eaten human meat, or drank with hands after cutting someone up. I have eaten human fat, but that has never been an issue, did they change that recently?

The only thing I can think of is just an unfortunate glitch.. I was running to NW a couple days ago and started laughing. Next day when I logged back in I was sneezing like the cold, but today I'm back to laughing... Really unfortunate as I've had this character so long. Not looking forward to suicide..
