I love Jason Momoa, but he is not Kiwi and he has done the haka in the past. I don’t mind this because he is doing the haka respectfully.

However, I think it would much better if we also saw him, and as many people as possible, doing kapa haka.

Kapa haka isn’t just the flashy haka, but more steeped in tradition and culture. Therefore, people taking the time to do that, shows respect and understanding.

The narrative for people around the globe who do the haka, without truly understanding stand what it means, shouldn’t be “cultural appropriation” but “hey, if you like the haka, you should try doing kapa haka, too.”

After my Dad passed I have been more driven to get a grasp of our culture. Trying to pick up te reo and studying some history of the family..

Dad never really exposed me to much Maori culture besides Hangis and some song. And as I didn't make it passed 3rd form in school I never got to experience kapa kaha..

I was wondering if there was any way to dive into it as an adult? Living in North Auckland.
