A list of puns related to "Joseph Gurney Barclay (astronomer)"
So I'm trying to pin down which of these men was the father of my 5th great grandmother, Ann Goodman Gurney. Ann was baptized 1809 in Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire, England. The baptism record states she was the illegitmate daughter of Sally Gurney and that the "reputed father" was Joseph Paine. According to the Bedfordshire Quarter Sessions Rolls, Joseph lived in Aspley Guise and was a tailor.
With that information, I believe I have it narrowed down to two men - a father and son.
Joseph Paine Sr was definitely living in Aspley Guise at the time and was definitely a tailor. He was, however, married and significantly older than Sally. Sally was born about 1786. I'm not sure of Joseph Sr's birth date, but he married his wife (Elizabeth Jerroms) in 1785 - so he would have to be about 20 years older than Sally, at a minimum. This obviously doesn't rule him out, but it is enough to make me pause.
As for Joseph Paine Jr, I've got next to nothing on this guy. I don't know for sure if he was living in Aspley Guise at the time, or that he was a tailor, but I also haven't found anything to disprove it. All I have is his baptism record; he was baptized in 1790 in Aspley Guise. So he would be a few years younger than Sally, putting him at about 18-19 when Ann was born. To me, that seems a little bit young to be working as a tailor, but I'm hardly an expert and I'm sure it's not impossible.
So I'm looking for a fresh perspective. Is there an obvious answer here that I'm missing, or is this just something I'll never know for sure? Any suggestions or opinions would be very much appreciated :)
