Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart Puns

A beautifully animated movie, which (in my opinion) would give Tim Burton a run for his money if it were more well known. Based off a book, this movie follows a boy named Jack who was born on the coldest day on Earth and has his heart replaced with a Cuckoo Clock. Because of this, he has three rules of which to live by, one of them being he must never fall in love. It’s a coming-of-age, steampunk esque story with quite an interesting musical score and it’s actually very poetic.

...And I don't know what to do with these emotions.

Some of you may have seen the movie, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, which is based on this book.

Without spoilers, the ending just upsets me so much. It's heartbreaking, so much more so than the movie's ending, which is a tear-jerker itself.

And then, he spends so much of his life afterward as just a ghost, sinking into his own memories of the past. It's horrible. If he had moved on, built a new life, discovered himself, a version of himself that isn't driven by a childhood image of love, then yeah I'd totally be cool with, I'd accept that. but this? Where he seemingly wastes away to nothing? I literally can't handle it. I'm actually upset. I'm heartbroken.!<

Hugo and The Boy with the cuckoo-clock heart are books that got turned into films, which share a character in common: George Melies.

By itself, this doesn't mean that they are related to each other, but there are evidences in both stories which imply that they happen in the same universe.

Spoilers ahead

In The boy with the cuckoo-clock heart, main character Jack meets a young George Melies while he's searching for a clockmaker that will fix his mechanical heart. Melies is impressed to see how a clock mechanism keeps Jack alive, and decides to become his personal doctor/mechanic during his adventures, which inspire him to write a book and make some of his first movies.

At the end of the book, we learn that Melies became a pioneer of the film industry, got married (as this story portrays him as a ladies' man) and after losing most of his work, ended up selling toys at Montparnasse station... which is the setting where Hugo takes place.

One of the key elements of this story is the automaton (later revealed to be an invention of Melies), a "robot" who is activated by using a heart-shaped key. Which is surprisingly similar to the key that Jack uses to keep his mechanical heart beating.

In The boy with the cuckoo-clock heart, after being rejected, Jack attempts to destroy his mechanical heart and Melies rescues him, installing an "upgraded" version of the clockwork heart in his body.

So, my theory is that Melies decided to keep the key for Jack's old heart as a memento. Years later, he built the automaton as a way to honor his friend (Maybe after learning of his "death"?) and decided to use this key as part of the activation mechanism. A nice and symbolic touch, indeed.
