Benedict Cumberbatch is a rare example of an amazing actor from the UK that can't quite nail an American accent from any region

Top 3 Offenders

Dr Strange: Sounds like he's over emphasizes certain inflections on softer A sounds on words can't handle what

Power of the Dog: I'm not sure if he was going for a modern regional Montana accent or trying to go more southern cowboy. Either way complete miss

Black Mass: I suppose Boston has a notoriously difficult accent to nail but it was a bad enough attempt that they should've just hired another actor. He didn't have a lot of dialogue but what lines he did have he kinda mumbled through them

What small role actors stole the scene or entire movie?

So, every now and then, not the main actors, but an actor in a relatively smaller role is so good they steal either a scene, or a sequence, or even an entire movie.

In your opinions, what are good examples of these.

A couple of the top of my head:

The character Kid Blue in Looper. Although he seems to be considered stupid in the film by most of the other characters, he really seems to keep getting ahead and outsmarting others (although he always ends up screwing it up again).

Bill Murray in a very small role in Little Shops of Horrors. Steve Martin is the lunatic dentist who likes to scare and cause pain in his patients, but then out of nowhere, Bill Murray comes in and totally flips things on their head. He enjoys pain and wants the dentist to do his worst.

I know I have a lot more examples, I just can't think of them at the moment. If I do, I'll add them to the list, but I would like to hear about your own.

EDIT:

Some good answers, but some people clearly don't even understand the question.

EDIT:

How in the hell did this post blow up so much?

EDIT:

I just remembered a good one. The character of Ellis in the first Die Hard movie.

If you'd have told me when I was a kid that the guy from "Swingers" was going to usher in the Marvel cinematic universe, redefine the "Star Wars" universe and create one of the most beloved Christmas movies of all time, I'd have probably though you were talking about Vince Vaughn lol. Nepotism in young Hollywood: Which currently popular actor/actress is NOT a product of being well-connected and/or rich?

Honestly, off the top of my head, I can only think of Zendaya. Her parents were high school teachers.

Then, on the other side of the pond, where classicism is supposedly even more pervasive in acting circles to the point where even Dame Judi Dench has famously spoken out about it, I can only think of James McAvoy and Olivia Cooke as actors that come from a working-class background.

Is there such a thing as actor fatigue for movie lovers?

I love Dwayne Johnson. I love Ryan Reynolds. I think Lin Manuel is doing important things. While it's not actually the case it FEELS like they are involved in every other movie release and I just don't want to watch their movies. Is this some kind of fatigue? Over-saturation? Are casting decisions based on the same focus groups?

EDIT: Great responses and thank you for the insight. I would have to agree with most here that it may be more about the lack of variety with their roles than with the actors themselves. Type casting is a thing and they keep doing the same thing as long as it pays dividends.

Taron Edgerton not being nominated for Best Actor in Rocketman a year after Rami Malek won for Bohemian Rhapsody is criminal.

I am mostly upset that Edgerton’s performance wasn’t even recognized with a nomination considering that he actually sang in the movie. Taron crushed that performance. The Malek comparison is just there because he did less than Taron. Malek didn’t sing for his film and in that same year, beat out an actor that did sing (B. Cooper).

Examples of an actor's limited range adding to the performance

Just out of curiosity. What famous roles were enhanced by an actor not taking it to another level? I was thinking of Conan being a good example. Arnold being a fresh actor playing a more pensive, to the point warrior definitely helps more than hinders. I can't imagine Conan having much charisma and that's definitely for the best.

The writing maybe shit, but one thing you can't criticise is that Geralt, Yen, Ciri and Jaskier are all well cast and their actors are putting in a great effort with what they are given.

Some extra points after reading comments.

Yen being miss cast is something that a lot of people are bringing up. However I don't see this as a miss cast but a bad choice is her costume/makeup design. Look at how different Ciri is from S1 to S2. They could definitely adjust Yen to be older looking though costume and makeup choices. Furthermore, alot of what makes her seem immature is not a casting issue but rather a writing issue. If you watch Anya in interviews she seems more than capable of playing the character Yen should be, but she hasn't been given the chance. Her lack lf connection to the character (unlike Henry's knowledge) could mean she has less input on how she is portrayed more accurately.

One thing I would say is that if they swapped the appreance of age between Triss and Yen. There would be a lot less complaints about Yen as a character.
