Rotating spots with ROH for a time, IMPACT would rise and fall as the No. 2 promotion in America for the better part of its existence, and even reached a few notable moments where it arguably filled the niche of internet darling/indy showcase/fan favorite before some bad booking choices, coupled with AEW swooping in and creating a stranglehold on that niche (for many of us) since its own formation.
Anyway, well before AEW, IMPACT had several cases of self-inflicted damage that drove away fans, and has been sitting squarely on the peripheral of "most" wrestling fans for years. It's outlasted rivals, but never seems to be a threat to ever create a big splash in the wrestling landscape anymore.
The Forbidden Door opening and Kenny Omega as champ was a "cool moment," and has led to a few fun storylines (though fewer than I think most of us hoped).
They had a female world champ for awhile.
The Micky James in the Rumble thing seems like another fun footnote in modern wrestling, but I'm tempering expectations that this leads to much notable for IMPACT, as a viewer of their shows.
So ... obviously understand that IMPACT has its own faithful following to this day, and has, by all accounts, been a pretty solid/quality show for some time. But with so much content now pouring out of the wrestling scene to take in (from the big 2 of WWE & AEW) to the ever-more-accessible nature of oversees and domestic indy wrestling, it's a crowded room and nothing has really seemed to spark noticeable grown for the company.
IF YOU'RE NOT A REGULAR IMPACT VIEWER, what would it take to reel you back in to regular viewing, or spark your interest to start tuning in for the first time?
Last, I realize it's perfectly okay if IMPACT simply exists as an alternative, and not every company needs to be a gigantic, marketing force. Still, it's fair to ask, is there anything the company could do to pull in new viewers at this point?
According SRS over at Fightful Select, W. Morrissey’s contract expired at the end of October and he is no longer with the company in an official sense. He hoped to have a new deal, but that didn’t happen and he is now officially a free agent.
Morrissey was reportedly looking for “a big money deal” after he proved himself on screen. That “big money deal” was noted as being a big money deal by “Impact standards.”
He was not seen on the last set of Impact tapings, which will take the company to the end of the year.
I think that WWE just officially made the Wrestling Multiverse canon now lol. So what are you guys' thoughts?
1- Jeff Hardy, is former 6 time world champion, 3 in wwe and 3 in tna but his 1 TNA championship reign is longer than all 3 of his wwe world title reigns. TNA made him a real main eventer, giving him 310 day reign in total with his 3rd one being his best. He held the title for 133 day and went on defend his title against all comers such as Kurt angle, Christopher daniel, Roode and bully ray. This was what fans wanted to see, him having a lengthy reign and not losing it in 42 days in favor of having a bro vs bro feud that nobody gave a damn about.
2- Matt hardy, former 2 time TNA world champ, Matt is a genius, someone who used the world title as a stepping stone to his brilliant broken gimmick. They gave him freedom and he proved that he is way better than what everyone thought. Carried tna in his back (2015-2017) and became the hottest thing in wrestling at the time.
3- John Morrison, Johnny Impact proved himself that he is a main event player in lucha underground and AAA and when Impact wrestling trusted him with their world title, he didnt dissapoint.
4- Christian, TNA took a chance at him in 2005 and Christian delivered. Not to mention he held their world title again recently and did his best in 70 days, giving good promos with great matches.
5- Bully ray, that title made the guy look like billion bucks.
6- Lashley, his career in TNA is one of the best. Was unstoppable and dominant world champ, winning the title 4 times. This lashley would eat wwe lashley in dinner.
I think IMPACT needs a little more pack to their punch. I can see Ember really giving some classics with Deonna & Mickie there along with some promising new stars there like Lady Frost.
IMPACT also has a history of nailing wrestlers when it comes to giving them a character and or gimmick, and one of her biggest struggles according to fans is her character work and promo work. I think IMPACT could help her greatly with that, it worked for W. Morrisey (FKA Big Cass) as he definitely lacked that skill.
