Please do give his music a listen. Imho, heβs the greatest film score composer in the world considering his prolificity, versatility, ingenuity, innovative ness and speed of output. Dude has composed for over 1000 movies and in India, he needs to compose songs as well as the ost for the movie. He has composed more than 5000 songs, and, he has composed for non film albums as well including symphony.
Iβve linked a few songs and ostβs out of the plethora of masterpieces that the maestro has composed
Ilaiyaraaja is undoubtedly the greatest film score composer that India has produced. He's a living phenomenon and has played a major role in the success of innumerable films. He's particularly renowned for his mind-blowing background scores, as well as his unmatched creativity. During his peak, he used to compose for 40-50 films a year. Ik, the stats are mind boggling! Infact, lots of Bollywood musicians have acknowledged he's a genius including laxmikant, pyarelal, ram sampath, A.R.Rahman, shantanu moitra and even Rd Burman. Rd Burman even claimed that Raja's music is light years ahead of it's time and was a big fan of raja's music. Apparently, According to spb, when ilayaraja came to Mumbai to record a famous song from thalapathi- Mani ratnam's movie with rajini- , The musicians gave him a standing ovation. I've also heard that the entire Bollywood music industry came to witness Raja performing as well(probably, for the same song) when he'd come to Mumbai for a recording. His speed of composing is extremely fast too. Infact,in a poll conducted by cnn-ibnΒ celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema in 2013, Ilaiyaraaja was voted as the all-time greatest film-music director of India with a maximum of 49%.
His range and sheer prolificity is unparalled and he's probably the most complete composer that indian cinema has seen. He has composed for 1000+ scores and is acknowledged as a demigod in the Tamil film industry. My question is, why couldn't he achieve success in Bollywood like Mr A.R. Rahman. Btw, Rahman used to program for him and has worked as a keyboardist for ilaiyaraaja.
