A list of puns related to "House of Staunton"
Glad to be back again and this time hope to get into kings landing powers with this lovely little claim near the Capitol with almost no written lore. As such I will be changing the characters of the house to suit my own purposes. Hope to get posting soon with some fun shenanigans.
Lord Rodney Staunton (deceased) - Among the most debauched of fellows to have ever roamed Westeros. Spent his life drinking gambling and whoring away his lands resources in kings landing whilst neglecting his familial as well lordly duties. Died in the arms of his myrish mistress whom would later give birth to a bastard whom Ramona kindly took in.
Lady Ramona Staunton (50) - Very sad lass whom tragically put up with a horrid husband for all her life. Never once acting without faith and honor at home. Dutifully raised four children and managed the affairs of her lords estate. Fondly regarded as a pious and generous lady whom built a new school as well sept for the villagers. Exempted them from taxes and provided rations during a famine. Prays often for the soul of her husband and future of her children.
Lord Roland Staunton (26) - Travelled the high seas for many years in order to see the world and escape a boringly wretched life at home. Trading in the free cities, fighting in the disputed land, exploring the interior of essos. Upon hearing word of his fathers demise returns home. Hoping to establish his new position more firmly and use it to further his ambitions of greatness.
Rodrick Staunton (24) - Rather dour fellow concerned with letters and numbers. Could be found planning and directing the building of warehouses on the docks, clearing of forests for fields, inspection of cattle for slaughter, implanting new taxation and accounting methods. Has a penchant for fine wine and cheese. Bit of a bore but good at what he does none the less.
Ravera Staunton (22) - A timid and frail lass whom was often sick when younger. Prefers to spend her time in solitude. Whether that be in religious contemplation or tending her garden. Often however disguises herself to sneak out into the nearby village or forest. Their she plays with the local children and gives alms to the poor. Or can be sketching the local fauna and animals. Would prefer to not marry and has rejected all romantic interests.
Ralf Staunton (20) - Cut of a black cloth and quite the rogue. Takes after his father in many respects. Involved in various troubles but always bailed out. Dresses like a dandy but acts like

The reason of this post was a very sad remark of one of the posters of reddit. According to him Howard Staunton will be remembered because he denied to play against Morphy. He was a chess coward(according to him).
Very sad indeed that people know nothing about Howard Staunton yet they feel they can judge him.
Staunton had abandoned chess since 1851 because of health issues and in 1858 when people tried to organise a match against Morphy , he was in bad health and already 48 years old against a healthy 21 years old Morphy. Many say that he initially agreed to play because he seriously overestimated his chances to be in a good physical form in time, something that never happened(till the end of his life).
Staunton's contribution in chess development is bigger than any other's(till Steinitz) ,even bigger than Morphy's. His chess column for the Illustrated London News became the most influential in the world and his articles became a reference for decades. He was the one making Morphy well known to the rest of the world by following his progress and his games with regular articles about him. Some of Morphy's games wouldn't exist without Staunton recording them. Staunton produced in total over 1400 weekly articles a number surpassed only by Averbakh more than 100 years later!!!
In 1847 he published his most famous work: The Chessplayer's handbook
It contained over 300 pages of opening analysis and almost 100 pages of endgame analysis. This was the most influential book of chess for many decades. There was not even one of the great players that followed that didn't study this book from cover to cover. There wasn't even one of them that wasn't influenced by it. The great David Bronstein said about this book that "without it , chess wouldn't be as we know it".
Additionally Staunton organised the first tournament something not easy at all back in his time and he tried to create the first tournament rules. Even the pieces we play with are his design.
Ignorants will remember him for not facing Morphy .All the rest though will remember him for his contribution in chess development and chess community will be eternally grateful to him.
Thank you Howard!
Welcome to Part 3 of the 1919 Decatur Staleys Centennial Series (name pending)! After smashing Stonington in Week 2, our heroes host Staunton.
#The Blowout: Decatur Staleys vs. Staunton
Shortly after his Staleys destroyed Stonington 50β3, manager Fritz Wasem scheduled a game against Danvers, a team that had enjoyed success over the last seven seasons.^[1]
In the week leading up to the game, Wasem and assistant Jim Cook decided to host more tryouts; among the attendees was ex-Decatur High School fullback and Army major Lutz Krigbaum, who saw combat in World War I as a machine gunner and later became a colonel during World War II.^[1][2][3] He would ultimately make the team as a left guard.^[4] His new teammates also experienced position changes as C. Lawrence Thrift was moved from end to fullback, while Pyrzynski, who struggled against Stonington, was replaced by Jake Lanum at right halfback.^[4][5] After making his lineup changes, Wasem and his team were ready to take on Danvers.
Well, until Danvers canceled the Tuesday before the game. In their place, Staunton agreed to take on the Staleys.^[6] Staunton, a team composed primarily of coal miners, posed a size advantage over the Staleys, who primarily relied on speed (their opening day linemen averaged 185 pounds, while the backfield was around 175β180 lbs).^[7] However, that's not to say Staunton couldn't keep up; The Decatur Herald's pre-game article wrote, "This is expected to be one of the best teams that the locals will meet this year, as they have so far lived up to their reputation of independent stars and won the two games by decisive scores which they played this year. [...] The visitors are touted to have a very heavy line and their backfield is both heavy and fast."^[5]
Of course, pre-game hype only goes so far and it's up to the teams to live up to that hype. And Staunton... did not do that.
Things got off to a rough start for the visitors when the Staleys recovered a Staunton fumble on the opening drive. From there, Thrift quickly thrived in his new FB role as he pounded his way into the end zone, though Jack Mintun missed the extra point. When Staunton got the ball back on their next possession, Lanum immediately intercepted their QB Ackerman's pass and returned it for a pick-six. Lanum picked Ackerman off again shortly after and took it to Staunton's 20-yard line; in the red zone, Lanum and Wasem paved the way before Thrift smashed th

Myra Staunton gripped the sides of her chair harshly, her fingernails digging into its wooden armrests. The menagerie of Blackfield sat around in the Great Hall, feasting on shit food and shit wine. To Myra's left sat Rodrik Staunton, her retarded son who spent his days screaming endlessly at the walls like the fool he was. To her right was her uncle Byron, a weasley man that sniffled every few seconds like he had a perpetual cold. It was easy to understand why he might be afflicted by sickness, the walls of Blackfield were crumbling, letting in the weather and leading to many afflictions across the keep. Myra sighed, her branch of House Staunton was financially ruined. They sat on perhaps the least fertile patch of land in the entire Crownlands, the only thing the peasants could grow were potatoes. Grass barely seemed to grow, and the inhabitants of the castle town couldn't keep many animals as livestock, unfortunate for their diets and leading to much malnutrition across the hold. The family didn't even have a maester they were so poor.
Myra grimaced, the cursed Parmen Staunton, her second cousin, had stripped the Stauntons of Blackfield for all they were worth when her brother had made the mistake of trying to oppose his rule and advance their standing in Rook's Rest's court. His head was lopped from his body, and even now Myra kept her brother's skull high above the halls of Blackfield. Parmen Staunton was a vilified character around Blackfield, men threw knives at crude drawings of the Lord of Rook's Rest, and men cursed his name whenever they felt a tinge of hunger. Myra's new life had been dedicated to achieving vengeance for her brother and working to see herself on the great seat of Rook's Rest in the Resthall. And so now as the shitsmeared families sat to eat, Myra raised her glass of "dornish" red to toast,
"To the Death of Lord Parmen Staunton"
A rowdy cheer broke out across the hall as men, women, and children clapped in praise of her words. The Stauntons of Blackfield were on a mission, a mission of fire and blood.
So there's this Sicilian variation in which it starts with the usual moves 1.e4 c5 and then white's second move is c4 which is called the Staunton Cochrane variation and this variation always catches me off guard and completely makes me stray away from my opening repertoire and makes me lose most of my games and dumb little me can't find a solution for it, so I kinda stopped playing Sicilian for a bit. Are there any ways that I can like, counter this variation or a gambit that I can use that works well against it?
