I found this subreddit and I thought that it might be useful for some members of the community to know about my podcast, The History of Spain Podcast. My name is David Cot and I'm a Spaniard with the aim to teach the history of Spain to English speakers. In my podcast, that has been running for more than a year now, I cover the history of Spain following a chronological order, and I've briefly covered the Prehistory, Protohistory and Roman period, then more deeply the era of the migrations of "barbarians" that ended up with the establishment of the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, and right now I'm explaining the 9th century. In the website of the podcast you can find the show notes, scripts and sources that I used for the episodes, as well as a store with history books and other stuff related to Spain. Hopefully some of you will find the podcast a good and entertaining educational resource!

Iβm going to be moving to Spain in 2 weeks and I know very little about their history I will be there for 3 months teaching language arts and I donβt want to be the ignorant American coming in. Yes I could google this but if someone could give me a short summary of the major events and also a brief history on Gibraltar Iβve heard about it a lot but not sure exactly what the history of it is, thanks!
A short history of the Barcelona general strike of 1919 which began after the sacking of eight workers, and ended up as one of the most successful working class actions in history, which forced the introduction of the world's first 8-hour working day.
In February of 1919, eight workers from the maintenance department of a Canadian financed hydroelectric plant in Barcelona colloquially known as 'La Canadiense' were laid off for political reasons. These layoffs were to spark the most successful strike action in Spanish labour history. The strike, led by the anarcho-syndicalist union, the ConfederaciΓ³n Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) led to a city-wide general strike in Barcelona, involving more than 100,000 workers and became the most successful action in Spanish labour history, forcing the Spanish government to pass the eight hour day law, the first government in the world to do so.
By 1919, membership of the CNT had swelled to about 755,000 (as declared at the unions Madrid conference of that year), far ahead of its socialist rival union, the Union General de Trabajadores (UGT), whose membership was about 208,000 at that time. Roughly speaking, about 10% of the active Spanish adult population was a member of the CNT in 1919.

After the initial layoffs by the bosses at La Canadiense in early February, 140 workers walked out on February 5th and three days later were joined by the vast majority of plant employees. Workers at another Barcelona plant were staging a sit-in in support of their comrades and about a week later, on February 17th, 80% of workers in the textile industry walked out, as well as striking in support of the laid off workers at La Canadiense, the textile workers demanded a recognition of their union, and a recognition by the authorities of the eight hour day. Soon after, the majority of other electrical workers in the city declared themselves of strike, also demanding a wage increase. On February 21st, a citywide general strike of power workers was called, leading to the closure of 70% of firms in Catalonia.
Fearing the growing power of the working class in Barcelona and t

Hi everyone,
I would like to have some bibliography on the History of both Spain and Korea, similar to George Sansom´s ¨History of Japan¨ (in a couple volumes, covering the majority of the history of the country), with another book(s) to complement, similar to what Andrew Gordon's ¨From Tokugawa Times to the Present¨ would be as a complement to Sansom´s books. I hope this is clear, and thanks in advance for your help!
Hello everyone. Iβm learning Spanish and planning a trip to Spain, and somewhat feel the need to learn more about the history before jumping into the plane (or even making travel plans).
So, I wonder if anyone could recommend a book about the history of Spain. It doesnβt need to be an encyclopedia, just informative enough for an outsider to know what happened in the past and what the consequences are and implications for today. (I have read some Wikipedia pages already, and am in the middle of reading Open Veins of Latin America)
Many thanks in advance!

Queen Isabella of Castile was one of the great state-building monarchs of the later Middle Ages, but state-building had a dark side: the Spanish Inquisition, the expulsion of the Jews, and the beginnings of a decades-long war that would consume western Europe for three generations.
Hi, I wanted to learn a bit more about the history of Spain but I'm unable to find a good book going through the whole story of the country. To give you an example, in French, we have "L'Histoire de France" from Jacques Bainville and, if it exists, I would like something equivalent.
Someone has an idea ?
Thanks
Edit : I forgot to say it but it can be in spanish
