Prelude and Chapter 1

Welcome to the first week of r/ayearofmiddlemarch! It's great to be back this time as a veteran. I hope we can give everyone as good a time as I had last year.

The format of these posts is going to be a summary of the plot and extra information that might be in the footnotes in the main post, followed by a few questions posted beneath as comments. You can reply to the questions below. Feel free to drop into as many or as few questions as you like, and feel free to add your own top-level questions if you have thoughts that aren't really covered by the questions suggested by mods (just please be mindful of spoilers if you have read ahead!). Remember, they're only suggestions! Have fun!

Summary

First of all, Eliot gives us a brief recap of the story of Teresa of Ávila, a sixteenth-century Spanish mystic who became a nun and a theologist. Eliot tells us that as a child Teresa was very pious, but that the society that she lived in made it difficult for her to live up to her potential, and argues that there are many people just like her.

We then move into chapter 1 where we meet the Brooke family: the landowner Mr Brooke and his orphaned nieces. Dorothea is understatedly beautiful and passionately religious, while the younger Celia is more glamorous and lighter in disposition. In this chapter, Celia is keen for them to look through their late mother's jewellery and both pick out some pieces for themselves, but Dorothea is somewhat dismissive... until she spots a couple of pieces that catch her eye. Celia notices that her sister can be somewhat inconsistent in her piety.

Context

One of Dorothea’s ancestors is β€œa Puritan gentleman who had served under Cromwell but afterward conformed and managed to come out of all political troubles as the proprietor of a respectable family estate.” This is a reference to the Interregnum and subsequent political purges during the Restoration.

Dorothea is noted as having portions of Pascal’s PensΓ©es and Jeremy Taylor memorized - the PensΓ©es is a work of asceticism written by Blaise Pascal. Jeremy Taylor was a Royalist poet and cleric during the Interregnum.

The inhabitants of Middlemarch are still discussing β€œMr. Peel’s late conduct on the Catholic Question,

Lexicon of Ladies’ Names by Sarah C. Carter (1853) Boston, USA

I found an old namebook on Google Books from 1853 called Lexicon of Ladies’ Names with their Floral Emblems by Sarah C. Carter. It was originally printed in Boston, Mass. USA. I love old name books because I find it interesting to see how name meanings evolved, but also to see which names were considered common, normal, accepted, etc. This book states straight away that they chose the most poetic meanings, so I’ll enjoy it for that. They then matched them to flowers based on their meanings, which were a big thing during this period. You could say a lot with the right bouquet. And each name has a poem, all of which I enjoyed reading (kind of phoned it in with Victoria though).

The preface says:

> β€œNAMES were anciently chosen for their Significations. In modern times this fact has been lost sight of, and such Significations can now be found only in ancient books, except a few in our family Bibles. Authorities differ somewhat in their definitions of names, in such cases, the author has adopted the one which her own taste dictated; also in the Floral Emblems, she has pursued the same course.”

I thought some of these meanings were an interesting take on the literal translations, like Eva - Living and Enlivening, or Diana – Luminous. The spelling of Phebe aligns with what is found in the King James Bible, and was used as often as Phoebe in the US during this period. Names with repeating meanings are grouped together, so it is interesting that Jenny is listed on its own, not as a diminutive of Jane, and both Betsey and Bessie are listed together but not with Elizabeth. Some unfortunate meanings are made a little more appealing by the chosen Flower Emblem, like Asenath – Misfortune, flower emblem is Aloe: β€œThink not the Almighty wills one idle pang, one needless tear”, with a poem about silver linings. Some are left unredeemed, like Birsha, an evil, flower emblem of barberry, β€œSour-tempered”. No wonder that one didn’t catch on (also it’s the name of a man in the bible?). You can read the whole book on Google Books (link in comments) and look up the flower it was matched with as well as the poems. I only included the name meanings below.

Any meanings you enjoy or way off the mark? Julia means curly-haired? I’m very intrigued by Tryphosa and Tryphena. And kind of dig Urania, the Greek muse of astronomy and astrology (also spelt Ourania).

2021 women's transfer thread

Transfer season is officially open, so it's time for another thread (does this count as OC for the hall of fame voting if I'm posting this before the men's thread goes up, even if I'm just copy/pasting from last year?). I'm trying to keep it similar to last year's one, so rumours are included, and confirmed transfers are in bold.

I've included the Women's WorldTeams, and teams that have announced / are rumoured to apply for WorldTeam status next years. That's 15 teams - I've got a table at the end for any other notable transfers / stagiaires / retirees

Here is a list of riders out of a contract for next year. It is PCS, who are not the most up to date on the women's side usually + 1 year contracts are still pretty standard in women's cycling, so don't read too much into it. Cycling Fever have a great overview of transfers, rumours and contract extensions.

Quick summary of changes for Women's WorldTeams in 2022:

  • Minimum salary goes up to €27,500 per year (from €20,000 this year)
  • Pensions savings introduced
  • Minimum number of riders per team goes up from 9 to 10, maximum goes up from 16 to 20.
  • 10% increase in prize money
  • Riders will receive 50% of the total prize money for the GC at the end of stages (instead of 20% previously), bringing the system into line with the men’s.

This come in addition to sickness and maternity cover introduced in 2021. From 2023 onwards, the minimum salary for women in the WT will be the same as for Professional Continental men, and Neo Pro status will be introduced.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
