Not only is he the first non-professional actor to win this award, he was the first person to sell his Oscar ( to pay for his wife's medical bills) for "The Best Years of Our Lives".

He is absolutely adorable as "Wings" in the oft ignored "Inside Moves almost 40 years later as one of the 'misfits' at the bar.

If there's someone who was criminally underused, in the decades between, it's him.

His performances make me feel like I knew him He reminds me of my grand uncle. Congenial, but tough as nails.

Not in the market myself and I know they are generally very regulated industries, but I would bet there are some good stories out there.

The guy is a living legend, how can one go from Valentine to Codsworth and still sound realistic?

I finally got around to watching this and.... wow, this is a great movie wholly deserving of its status as a classic. It's about three soldiers returning home from WW2 and their difficulties readjusting to regular life.

What blew me away about this movie was the realism of it, making it so unlike every other movie I've seen from the 1940's. The script and the acting are phenomenal. Even though I have no connection to military life, I was able to relate, understand, and sympathize thoroughly with what these characters were going through. I was moved deeply and will be thinking about this film for some time to come.

The most moving part of the film is Harold Russell's performance as Homer. Harold Russell was an actual WW2 vet (not a professional actor) who lost both of his hands in his service, and in the film he plays a WW2 vet who likewise lost both of his hands. The movie deals directly with his emotional difficulties reintegrating into life, like hating being treated with pity. The most powerful scene is when he invites his girlfriend Wilma up to his room to watch as he takes his hooks off for bedtime, and then explains how he's completely helpless once they're off since he can't put them back on again himself. It's so powerful because he's speaking from his true personal experience. I think it was unbelievably courageous for Harold Russell to expose his innermost struggles like that.

As a consequence of his powerful performance, Harold Russell is the only person to ever receive two Oscars for the same role. Even though he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, the Academy didn't think he would win so gave him an honorary Oscar for "bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans through his appearance". Then later in the program he actually did win Best Supporting Actor.

I found Captain Derry's character arc very moving as well. In the service, he's a distinguished hero with a high rank. When he comes back, he has no skills due to spending years in the service and is only able to get menial, low-paying work. He suffers a lot as a consequence, and it feels so unfair.

This movie must have been cathartic for so many vets at that time, who must have been suffering from similar problems readjusting. So as relatable and relevant as it still is today, I can't even imagine what it must have felt to be a veteran at that time watching a movie that understood your own struggle.

A comparable movie to The Best Years

I have this little project that I do for fun where I use players' yearly regular season fantasy ranks along with formulas that also factor in longevity of careers to determine an all-time ranking. What I like about it is that it gets around changes in the way the game is played throughout generations, since players accumulate points and move up the rankings solely through being better than their contemporaries in that specific year. For example, quarterbacks in the current NFL have much higher passing yardage and touchdown numbers because the game is more pass-centric than it was in 1970, for instance.

What I have posted here is a small sample, as I have hundreds of entries for each position. I thought this would be interesting to post, and might create some fun discussion about where players belong in an all-time rank. I fully understand that, even though these ranks are the result of data, the formulas I have created are my own, and "greatness" is subjective to an extent, so please don't try to attack me for having a bad opinion. I'm not making a statement about how I feel about any specific players or players at large. I am simply sharing the results of my data. Enjoy.

Fans have been unhappy with Gettleman for years, and it seems like ownership is finally catching up. The Maras also seem content with holding on to former Patriots ST Coach Joe Judge as their locker room leader. If that is the case, it makes sense to bring in somebody Judge is already familiar with in Ziegler, the current Patriots' Director of Player Personnel. The 44-year-old is a Patriot through and through. He was college teammates with Nick Caserio (who he replaced following Caserio's move to Houston) and Josh McDaniels (under whom he was a scout in Denver). He has cut his teeth under Belichick, spending the last 9 years in the scouting department in New England. In his first year without the "assistant" being tagged onto his job title, Ziegler added key free agents in Kendrick Bourne, Matt Judon, and Hunter Henry. He also oversaw one of the best draft classes in recent Patriot history with Mac Jones a favorite to win ROTY on top of inspiring play from Christian Barmore and Rhamondre Stevenson.

In addition to Ziegler, Packers' OL Coach Adam Stenavich joins as the new offensive coordinator. A bit of an unknown name, Stenavich is a former NFL player that has really made the most of his coaching opportunities. With Green Bay, he has overseen a revolving door of elite late round picks at OL, from Corey Linsley to David Bakhtiari to Yosh Nijman. In 2021, the Packers have seen countless injury along the line yet still have maintained an elite unit. Prior to Green Bay, Stenavich was on Shanahan's staff in San Francisco, coaching the likes of Joe Staley, Mike McGlinchey, and Weston Richburg. While Stenavich is unproven as a playcaller, he has worked under two of the best young offensive minds in the game. On top of his promising resume, his area of expertise is one the Giants desperately need help with. Other than Andrew Thomas, the Giants' OL has been an endless pile of poop covered garbage.

Robert Francis Kennedy took office as President of the United States on January 20th, 1965. As he entered office he saught two goals - end the Vietnam conundrum expand the welfare state and end poverty.

When selecting his Cabinet, RFK had to balance out his Anti-Vietnam and Welfare idealism with the reality of the situation. For Secretary of State, he stunned many when he decided against naming J. William Fulbright as Secretary of State. Fulbright himself took this as a personal afront and his formally positive relations with Kennedy would deteriorate. The reason was due to Fulbright's Segregationist past. He considered Frank Church, but he determined that Church would be too controversial, thus he chose the experienced (if very liberal) diplomat George Ball. He would later resign as Secretary of State, after the attack on the USS Liberty + 6-Day War due to RFK's very Pro-Israeli views. He would later write a damning attack on RFK in Foreign Affairs, but his strong Anti-Israeli language would lead to accusations of Anti-Semitism. Either way, RFK passed up on other State Department officials to pick Clark Clifford as Secretary of State. Clifford was the man credited for getting Truman to recognize Isreal within the 1st hour. He was also a loyal Democrat, an expert in Foreign Affairs, a supporter of RFK's withdrawal from 'Nam, and a friend of Senate Majority Leader Johnson and former President Truman.

At Treasury, RFK's 1st instincts were his old friend Ken Galbraith. But, Senator LBJ warned him the Dixiecrats and Republicans would filibuster the nomination - thus he went with the Compromise option, Russell Long. Long was a Senator who was well-liked both for his competence (he was said to be the only man who knew the Federal Tax Code) and personality. On Civil Rights, although, he voted against the Voting Rights Act, he is perceived widely as a moderate, and MLK has promised to make statements supporting him for Treasury Secretary. With this assurance, RFK announced the nomination and it was an open and shut case. Long was one of the few me

TLDR : This is a sum of the most important Universal Basic Income experiments (when you hand over enough cash to people to survive, for free, without any conditions), that shows that it works in alleviating all social issues, poverty, illnesses, unemployment and lack of education, proving to be far more effective than traditional traditional welfare state approaches, with its monstruous bureauratic conundrum, while costing much less money too !

London, May 2009 – An experiment is under way. Its subjects: thirteen homeless men. They are veterans of the street. Some have been sleeping on the cold pavement of the Square Mile, Europe’s financial center, for going on forty years. Between the police expenses, court costs, and social services, these thirteen troublemakers have racked up a bill estimated at £400,000 ($650,000) or more.

Per year. The strain on city services and local charities is too great for things to go on this way. So Broadway, a London-based aid organization, makes a radical decision: From now on, the city’s thirteen consummate drifters will be getting VIP treatment. It’s adiós to the daily helpings of food stamps, soup kitchens, and shelters. They’re getting a drastic and instantaneous bailout. From now on, these rough sleepers will receive free money. To be exact, they’re getting £3,000 in spending money, and they don’t have to do a thing in return.

How they spend it is up to them. They can opt to make use of an advisor if they’d like – or not. There are no strings attached, no questions to trip them up.

The only thing they’re asked is: What do you think you need?

“I didn’t have enormous expectations,” one social worker later recalled.

But the drifters’ desires proved eminently modest. A telephone, a dictionary, a hearing aid – each had his own ideas about what he needed. In fact, most were downright thrifty. After one year, they had spent an average of just £800. Take Simon, who had been strung out on heroin for twenty years. The money turned his life around. Simon got clean and started taking gardening classes. “For some reason, for the first time in my life, everything just clicked,” he said later. “I’m starting to look after myself, wash and shave. Now I’m thinking of going back home. I’ve got two kids.” A year and a half after the experiment began, seven of the thirteen rough sleepers had a roof over their heads. Two more were about to move into their own apartments.

Valley Music Hall

So I have been looking into the circumstances surrounding Ballard’s Valley Music Hall demise and buyout by the church.

I am looking for everyone’s collective knowledge and sleuthing skills. Also tell me if my below facts are incorrect.

-(Late) 1950s: Ballard’s Edsel dealership failed.

-Around 1960-1965: Ballard was investigated by the SEC for securities fraud. A non-admission settlement agreement was made with restitution needing to be made by Ballard. Ballard’s broker license was revoked. Many company witnesses testified to Ballard’s fraudulent misrepresentations and schemes.

-Sometime between 1960-1965: $750,000 was collected from 5,000 investors by Ballard for Valley Music Hall.

-1965: Joseph Fielding Smith, Harold B. Lee, N. Eldon Tanner and Hugh Brown were at the grand opening in 1965.

-1965-(early)1970s: The Valley Music Hall was not successful enough to pay investors back. Ballard attempted other methods of raising money to pay people back.

-Sometime between (early)1970s and 1977 a fire broke out at Valley Music Hall just before it was purchased by the church.

-1977 the church bought Valley Music Hall, saving Ballard and his investors.

-Sometime between 1978-1980: Per Lynn Packer’s reporting on the Osmond-Riffo fraud fiasco, Ballard was involved in making a plea for lenders to hold off on the foreclosure of the Osmond home, asking for them to wait until the business deal with Riffo was closed. (Lying for the Lord, 269) Riffo was arrested at church HQ during meeting with Robert Wells.

-Sometime between 1978-1980: The church bought the Osmond’s Riviera Apartments in Provo and their Brentwood, CA condo to bail them out from their financial problems.

-2010: Heavy involvement in Biomeridian and Prolung. Owned many shares of stock. Both were penny stock pump and dump schemes with products of extremely questionable legality.

-Currently M Russel Ballard is a silent partner of Operation Underground Railroad’s for profit entities being used to funnel untaxed 501c3 money to the conspirators. These entities are under criminal investigation by the FBI and the Davis County DA.

Given this pattern of shady/borderline criminal behavior, I have the following questions:

What were the circumstances of the Valley Music Hall fire? Was there insurance money?

Davis County real estate records only show back to 1984.
