A list of puns related to "Gibbs phenomenon"
I asked one of my electrical engineer friends about it and all he said was that it was "natures way of dealing with theoretical models that rely on infinity". Can someone demystify the Gibb's Phenomenon for me? I would appreciate it.
Also, I've read that the phenomenon is also responsible for subtractive EQ moves causing boosts in other frequencies. For example, if you normalize or limit something like pink noise to 0dB, and then apply a subtractive EQ cut after the limiter in the signal chain, the gain will increase. Could someone explain this as well? Thank you!
Can someone please explain to me Gibbs Phenomenon barney style. thank you.
Always and forever I hear people recommend setting your external DAC to 100% in Windows for "bit-perfect" sound or whatever. I've always subscribed to this logic as well and it makes sense.
I've never really seen or heard a counter-opinion to this except for in our own wiki
On page 13, it briefly talks about Gibbs phenomenon and why you shouldn't set your DAC at 100%, but rather just below to reduce THD+N. A brief excerpt
>Gibbs phenomenon, and why you should not run your PC at 100% volume - Gibbs phenomenon Gibbs phenomenon affects all Digital Audio Converters (DACs), which as you have read is a device which converts digital data to analog, whether it be built in to your PC, or even an external DAC. Even one click (1% windows volume) is sufficient to prevent this. Letβs take a look at what these optimal settings will look like on a Windows 7 machine. I have chosen 98% to prevent the aforementioned phenomenon. According to JDS Labs testing βEvery DAC we've measured performs dramatically worse at full-scale, 100% volume. Decrease your software volume slider by -0.1dB (a single notch will do) for optimal THD+N performance.β
Can anyone expand on this? What are the consequences, does it really matter on modern DACs...etc?
I also found this discussion from a couple months ago that implies this is maybe incorrect? https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/3905de/can_we_talk_about_gibbs_phenomenon/
Please help...so confused as to what is it. Read through my calc text book and i can't wrap my head around what it means to overshoot at a jump continuity and doesn't die out.
Been stuck on this for a few hours.
Thanks in advance! help me math wizards...my gpa is at stake here TT.TT
Hi there, I'm working on a Fourier Series piece of work and I'm having trouble figuring out a key step
If anybody could shed a bit more insight on this I'd be very grateful :)
I have an electron in a gaussian well so the energy ends up being
V(r) = -5e^(-r^2/2)
I did the wkb approximation and got 14 energy levels, I took the 7th one to see what it looked like and wound up with this. (something to note is I'm working in nanometers and r^2 is being divided by r_0^2=1nm^2. Also, the reduced plank constant was divided by 10^(-18) to match units)
Does this answer make sense? The peak at the turning point makes me kinda worried. Thanks in advance!
The funeral director was asking us what we think Mum should wear in her casket.
Mum always loved to wear sarongs (fabric wraps that go around the torso and drape downward a bit like a long skirt would), so my uncle suggested that she wear a sarong in there.
The funeral director looked a bit confused, as did some of our family members, to which my uncle added:
"What's sarong with that?"
I started laughing like an idiot. He was proud of it too. The funeral director was rather shocked. We assured her, and our more proper relatives, that Mum would've absolutely loved the joke (which is very true).
His delivery was perfect. I'll never forget the risk he took. We sometimes recall the moment as a way help cushion the blows of the grieving process.
--Edit-- I appreciate the condolences. I'm doing well and the worst is behind me and my family. But thanks :)
--Edit-- Massive thanks for all the awards and kind words. And the puns! Love 'em.

True story; it even happened last night. My 5-year-old son walks up behind me and out of the blue says, "hey."
I turn to him and say, "yeah, kiddo? What's up?"
He responds, "it's dead grass."
I'm really confused and trying to figure out what's wrong and what he wants from me. "What? There's dead grass? What's wrong with that?"

.
He says, totally straight-faced, "hay is dead grass," and runs off.

No it doesn't.
