I've found there to be next to nothing about this man on the entirety of this website, let alone r/LetsTalkMusic. This seems odd considering his sudden rise in popularity within the UK.
So, what do you think of him? Best thing to come out of Scotland since Haggis, or the worst thing to come out of Scotland since Haggis?
Gerry Cinnamon is one of the UKβs biggest rising stars, having sold out Scotlandβs national football stadium, of 50,000 capacity, in just hours.
Yet cross the border to England, and practically nobody will have heard of him.
Considered the second biggest live draw in the UK, beaten only by Ed Sheeran, Gerry Cinnamon has became a huge phenomenon via only word of mouth.
Born Gerard Crosbie, the now 35 year old, grew up in a housing scheme in Glasgow, describing his childhood as βf*cking mentalβ. Having no father figure around, he got in trouble during his teens, and has tried working various trades. Yet nothing suit him, so he took his life experiences into his songs and started busking. He became a popular regular at an open mic night in a bar on Sauchiehall Street, in central Glasgow.
Unsigned, he wrote, recorded and released all of his music himself, with his nine track debut album Erratic Cinematic reaching number 1 in the UK iTunes singer/songwriter charts, and two of the singles were certified Silver. Heβs turned down offers from labels, wanting to do everything on his own terms, saying that being signed just wouldnβt work for him, as he wants complete ownership of his work.
He even performs solo on stage, with no backing band, just him, a guitar, and some pedals. Only having a friend to help him out, and his dog to keep him company on tour.
So far, all of this fame has been solely due to word of mouth. Selling out shows without even announcing them, no adverts. Just a single post on his Facebook page sold out a 1500 capacity venue within two days. Itβs only within the last few months his songs have gotten air play on local Scottish radio.
In 2019 he performed to sold out crowds across the UK and Ireland, including two nights at Londonβs Brixton Academy, and to his biggest, at the newly built P&J Live Arena, which has the biggest floor space of any arena in the UK with 15,000 fans in attendance. Breaking the record for the highest attendance at a Scottish indoor event. And at Glastonbury, a small tent with 7,000 capacity at an awkward time slot was filled to capacity with fans over 30 minutes before his set was due to start.
Heβs regularly seen on stage in Adidas trackies, claiming he doesnβt want any exposure or fame. βItβs just about the tunes!β Rarely giving interviews or appearing in any media. He didnβt even want reviews of his gigs in the press. Saying that the most important thing is βgiving people a good weekend.β
His su
