According to Wikipedia, the Germanic umlaut, a kind of regressive vowel harmony, occurred in all the Germanic languages except Gothic. This backwards harmonization of vowels that was said to take place 450-500 AD is why today "feet" is the plural of "foot", relics of the umlaut as it occurred in English.

According to Wiki, however, it did not occur in Gothic. Can anyone expound upon this?

• Is this because Gothic was attested before 450, before the sound change occurred, or did Gothic stay that way even after 500?

• Are the records we have of Gothic after 500 based on how it was spoken at the time or were they copies of older manuscripts?

• What about Crimean Gothic, which is said to be entirely different, a West Germanic rather than East Germanic langauge? Does that have the umlaut?

I'm reading how it was Gothic, at least the Gothic as spoken in the late antiquity and early middle ages, that was the only Germanic language known to not have undergone the umlaut process. I read that the North and West Germanic languages underwent the umlaut 450-500 AD.

Does the lack of the umlaut in Gothic have to do with it being attested prior to 450 AD? Does the Gothic spoken after 500 AD still have the lack of the umlaut? What about Crimean Gothic, attested much later than Gothic, does that have the umlaut in its history?

Is there a way to somehow make german Umlate (ä, ö, ü) appear on the right hand side page in the editor in titles? I've tried the Letter directly, and also the HTML-Code and the Unicode. Nothing works, it just shows a small 0.

I'm putting this question here, since this is the closest sub I could find for it.

I am thinking about buying the Kinesis Freestyle Edge RGB. You should know that I am based in Germany so my natural keyboard layout is QWERTZ instead of QWERTY.

So that by itself is not a problem, I can get around with typing on a QWERTY layout.

The only thin that worries me a bit is that there are not keys for the German Umlauts ö, ä, ü. I would be using the keyboard solely for typing at work; 90% of the text will be in English, so it's not a huge problem that there are not Umlaut keys. However, 10% of the text I will be typing will be in German. Of course, I could write oe instead of ö, etc. But that's a bit of a hassle.

So my actual question would be: Since the Kinesis Freestyle has this built-in macro thingy, could it be possible to set-up a Macro that allows me some context-sensitive usage of keys? I.e. using the "; :" key for ; or : (as in QWERTY) or for "ö" (the "ö" key is at the same position in the QWERTZ layout as the "; :" key in the QWERTY layout).

When typing capital umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) when using the h1 header they are being shown as ^e ^9 ^0 respectively (super script is intended).

Is that a font issue? The font being used here is MrJeeves, but I could find it only in the GMBinder documentation and no where else on the internet. I was able to confirm the font, though, by typing <span style='font-family:MrJeeves'>Ä Ö Ü</span>

If it is a font issue, can someone think of very similar fonts I could use instead this one that would work?

Hey, please help me with this script. Whenever I use a hotkey (for example alt+a if I want to type ä) I get the Umlaut and all the following (in this example äÄüÜöÖ߀). So if I type alt+shift+u I get ÜöÖ߀. Can anyone tell me how to correct this so I only get one Umlaut?

Recently I've been having online classes ofc and our german teacher has instructed us to use e after the letter where an umlaut is used but do you all have it on your keyboards?

German umlauts (äöü) show up as escape characters like so: K\303\206\nige (= Könige)

I think I just found a bug in the jellyfin search function. In general it does not matter if I search for film titles and write all of the words in lower case. But when a word starts with a German "Umlaut" like 'Ö', it suddenly does matter. There is a film called "Ödipussi" and when I type "ödipussi" into the search field, zero results show up. When I search for "Ödipussi" everything is fine though.

(I have not tested this, but I guess that this might affect 'Ü' and 'Ä' as well)

I looked into XCompose But I am unsure what my compose key is and how it is used. Could some please elaborate on that

Well I was just careless in reading so for everybody wanting a summary here are the steps:

• Check which keys are available for the compose key by typing

exec_always setxkbmap -layout <desiredLayout>

It took me a while to find a working solution for setting up German Umlaute on my ANSI Layout keyboard.

There are multiple options out there.

1. US International Keyboard: not recommended for Germans since every Umlaut is on a totally different key. I believe you need to press " to activate the Umlaut-Layer.
2. EurKEY: German Umlaute are respectively on a, u, o and s. Will take some time to get used to, too. You will have to press ALTGR (RAlt) to activate the Umlaut-Layer.
3. Executables like Autohotkey: I really dislike having to run an executable for this, but it does its job and you can set the Umlaut to the corresponding German keys (ä can be ").

Since my keyboard is patched with QMK and VIA, I wanted to program the Umlaute in VIA without having to use any other software. For this to work, you will need a windows layout, which already has all Umlaute in its package. EurKEY as well as the US International Windows Layout will do just fine. Due to simplicity, I would recommend the US International Windows Layout, which is preinstalled on your system.

Now, we want to use a macro for our German Umlaute. The corresponding macros for the US International Windows Layout are:

{KC_RALT,KC_P} for ö,Ö - EurKEY {KC_RALT,KC_O}

{KC_RALT,KC_Q} for ä,Ä - EurKEY {KC_RALT,KC_A}

{KC_RALT,KC_Y} for ü,Ü- EurKEY {KC_RALT,KC_U}

{KC_RALT,KC_S} for ß - EurKEY {KC_RALT,KC_S}

After saving these macros, you will need to put them on any layer you want to (I used Layer 1). Just put the macros on the exact same keys as on an ISO-DE keyboard. The final step will be to map a key to access this layer. Since I put them on Layer 1, I will have to remap a key as MO(1). You can put this key anywhere you want on Layer 0. Currently mine is set to what is usually leftwin, while leftwin is now on the right side of my spacebar.

Finished, now you have German Umlaute on your custom keyboard without using an executable or being forced to using ALTGR.

i successfully connected my AS 3000 with my Android-device (Samsung Note 10+). When i am using the AS 3000 as external keyboard, i can use the Umlaute and the "ß", but when i try to send a text with Umlaute to the note, only the non-Umlaut-characters will be typed.

In the Android-Settings i can see the AS 3000 as an external keyboard and the german keyboard layout is choosen.

Does anyone has an idea what i can do?

It would be great, if i could write a text on my AS 3000 and send it from whereever to my blog or to reddit. :-)

recently I've been using AutoHotKey as a tool to type certain German letters: ä, ü, ö and ß. My AHK script looks like this:

::ae::ä
::Ae::Ä
::oe::ö
::Oe::Ö
::ue::ü
::Ue::Ü
::ss::ß

The problem with this script is that, whenever I want to type these German letters, I would have to isolate these keys and then delete the space between them to make a complete word. For example, if I were to write the word "München", the process looks something like this:

M (space) ue (space) nchen => M ü nchen=> delete spaces => München

Is there any way to use these hotstrings without having to isolate them? I'm Vietnamese and we have a typing solution called "Unikey" or "Telex" which converts the letter combinations instantly and I really want to use something similar to that for German.

I just received my new AP2 (white, red switches). Absolutely love it.

Though I am German, I have my windows language set to EN (US). I have actually no problem with the Ansi KB layout. But there is one thing I somehow need to fix:
In German we use the letters ä, ö, ü. Normally they can be triggered by a combination of keys such as ALT+1,3,2 (numpad) or ALT=q (both combinations bring up the ä).
As the AP2 has no numpad (fortunately) the first combination does not work (unfortunately), same with the second one.

Has anybody a hint for me, what I could do?

This always confuses me because due to this the word changes its length and form so that I always have to read it twice before I know what is meant.

Hi, I'm looking for a preg_replace which adds a "+" in front of every word, otherwise my full text search query which I'm getting via a get request does not work.

This is what I have so far:

This works. "keyword1 keyword2" is converted to

+keyword1+keyword2

The problem is that it does not work with German umlaut like ä, ö, ü. So " keywörd1 keyörd2" gives me

+keywö+rd1 +keyö+rd2

as result.

Is there a way to fix this?

Quite a newbie so bear with me. I want to program Umlauts on my keyboard which has an ANSI layout. I use a german language on my OS. Can I just input the umlauts with a german keyboard with QMK configurator and expect them to output the umlauts? In QMK configurator it shows me ";" or "\" when i try to input umlauts.

Or do I need to #include "keymap_german.h" if my OS is set to german? If so where can I input this? in the downloaded JSON file? With what program?

I'm currently working on my first larger project in Godot and I want to store my text for the subtitles in JSON files. Everything is working fine, it crashes though as soon as I put a German "Umlaut" (ä, ö, ü) into my JSON file.

validate_json() returns:
Unicode error: invalid utf8

I know what this error means but I can't find a way to solve the problem. I really hope someone can help me. This is driving me crazy.
