Books for a John Le Carre fan - particularly George Smiley

I’ve loved nothing more than the Karla trilogy, have tried to find the same love in other JLC novels and tried Len Deighton Game Set and Match, but would love to find something where the protagonist has the unassuming brilliance of Smiley.

That moment in CALL FOR THE DEAD when you can read George Smiley becoming George Smiley as we know him and John Le Carre finding himself and his streams of thought for the next 60 years [SPOILERS]

"Dieter was dead, and he had killed him. The broken fingers of his right hand, the stiffness of his body and the sickening headache, the nausea of guilt, all testified to this. And Dieter had let him do it, had not fired the gun, had remembered their friendship when Smiley had not. They had fought in a cloud, in the rising stream of the river, in a clearing in a timeless forest: they had met, two friends rejoined, and fought like beasts. Dieter had remembered and Smily had not. They had come from different hemispheres of the night, from different worlds of thought and conduct. Dieter, mercurial, absolute, had fought to build a civilization. Smily, rationalistic, protective, had fought to prevent him. "Oh God," said Smiley aloud, "who was then the gentleman...?"

Laboriously he got out of bed and began to dress. He felt better standing up."

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) is a movie based on the 1974 book of the same name, which sees retired spy George Smiley hunting down a Soviet double agent. This is unlike the movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Asshole, where the protagonist conducts other meaningful endeavours.

Crime, mystery or fantasy books where the protagonist is unexceptional (the George Smiley factor)

I don’t have much tolerance for lead characters who are clearly just the wish fulfilment of the author (eg Dresden Files). I’m currently very much enjoying the John Le Carre novels and in particular George Smiley’s middle aged, clever but in a subtle way, un-romanticised and quite average protagonist. Can anyone please help with similar recommendations in any genre? Thank you!!

@AP: @AP For John le Carre, the world of espionage was a β€œmetaphor for the human condition.” In the quiet, watchful spymaster George Smiley, he created one of 20th-century fiction’s iconic characters β€” a decent man at the heart of a web of deceit. https://t.co/9KyM80RS4t mobile.twitter.com/AP/sta…
