I wanted to share with my fellow /r/nascar friends about some interesting information about Gateway Motorsports Park I learned during my tour today. I reached out to their PR person and he took me around the track. This gentleman had history working in NASCAR as far back as the 7 team with Geoff Bodine, and then got in to working directly for the tracks. He was very helpful in giving me a lot of information on the track while I was in town for business.
Gateway originally was owned by the Dover Motorsports group, but eventually shut it down in fall of 2010. The track set vacant for a year, and was two weeks away from having the grandstands removed and destroyed for scrap metal, when St. Louis Real-Estate developer and former Indy Lights driver Curtis Francois bought the track.
The track was built on leased land with 29 different land owners. Francois leased out the drag strip, cleaned it up and successfully brought NHRA there to see what kind of crowd it could bring in.
It was a success, so he bought the land from the 29 different owners, and was able to bring the truck series back, NHRA (again), and Indycar (again after many years).
The track's original pavement was a road-based compound as opposed to a track-based compound which caused it to crack and was rectified by a repavement in 2017.
This was really a cool experience. I was able to drive in the track and park my rental car in the pit lane. I really appreciated the tour today and the history and experience. I hope that they get an Xfinity race and possibly a Cup race in the future. The hospitality that was shown to me from this track's management was incredible, and I absolutely plan on making a trip back up here for one of the races.

I bought tickets awhile back for the race at Gateway and just got my e-tickets for the open test on May 2nd. I happen to notice on the list of items you can/can not bring into the track that all alcoholic beverages are prohibited. WTF?!?! It's not a major issue, but seriously it'd be nice to have a cold beer or two while watching a race.
