A list of puns related to "GNOME Files"
(Somewhat of a) Conclusion:
Okay so apparently file creation dates cannot be modified by anything after their birth on linux (at least ext4) as they only serve to indicate the birth of an inode, therefore, archiving directories and preserving their creation dates is impossible right now, unless you clone the whole partition, I guess.
This renders the crtime stat on ext4 useless for my purpose. For alternative ways of storing creation dates, there is git, so i have a version (and creation) history for all my programming projects, and for anything other than that, i would have to come up with my own way to store them.
I'm kinda disappointed, honestly. Please tell me there is another option than just using windows.
---
This is one of the biggest caveats of linux for me: It seems like nobody cares about creation timestamps for files and folders!
Creation times on ext4 are technically supported and stored in the inodes, but claimed to be unreliable by a stackexchange post. And Nautilus only started to display them in a rather recent update (with Gnome 40 i believe), and even now, creation dates on ntfs or fat are still missing.
How does it come that such a basic and useful feature is still not fully implemented in one of the biggest File Managers and File systems, as well as in the ntfs fuse driver, despite windows having it for literally decades?
I have to miss something, right?
Edit: Stackexchange post it's unfortunately not the one i was looking at originally but i can't find it anymore and this seems to be close enough
Edit2: Apparently its possible to use robocopy on windows to mirror a folder to a synology station and keep the crtime Link
Edit3: this is kinda what i want to do: move my stuff from windows to linux

I have had some problems creating and sharing Samba shares with MATE and Caja. This came up when I switched wireless routers. The issue is caused by Gnome Virtual File System using SMB Version 1 to be more universal, but many systems no longer allow Version 1. Newer Samba versions default to higher versions of SMB. Windows 10 does not allow it at all. This is because of security issues.
There are workarounds, using manual command lines to create and mount shares works fine. This is bypassing GVFS, which doesnβt seem to βknowβ the shares created in another manner exist. It also no longer automatically updates the list of local shares. I am still not quite sure how changing the router changed the default but it seems to be the case. I was using an Apple Time Capsule before (does allow SMB ver 1) and switched to an AT&T router, which of course would assume Windows 10 is the default. I canβt actually see a setting to control it.
Since GVFS is the real problem, I thought I might switch desktops. MATE was like the older versions. I thought about the KDE version.
This is an old machine. 2012 HP laptop, AMD64, AMD Trinity Radeon HD 7660 graphics, 4 GB of memory, plenty of disk space. I chose MATE because it was recommended for older systems. Would KDE work okay?
I could live with MATE as is. GVFS is the only issue.
Hi, is there any extension/application that let opening my frequently opened files on gnome panel (I've config files that I open a lot and wanna something that lists them in gnome panel when I click an icon, like "Places" does on gnome panel).
Hi. I was messing with my gnome to change the classic purple Lock Screen and accidentally changed something I wasnβt supposed to and I get the βOh no! Something is no rightβ screen when trying to boot. Does anyone know how I could reinstall the gnome files back to default?

I'm trying to display embedded cover art in .mkv files in GNOME Files but I can't seem to find a way to do it. Here's my setup:
bubblewrap-suid is installed instead of bubblewrap because linux-hardened doesn't generate any thumbnails and the wiki recommends bubblewrap-suid. I also have totem and ffmpegthumbnailer installed for video and audio files. Audio files display their cover art correctly. Videos without embedded cover art display a film reel border as it should. But videos with embedded cover art from MKVToolNix don't display their cover art in GNOME Files. Instead they show the regular film reel border. They display correctly in Windows 10 because I have Icaros installed which makes it possible to display cover art. How do I get them to display in Linux?
PS: It's stupid that I have to have totem installed in order display thumbnails. That should be integrated into GNOME itself. It's the same thing as gnome-settings needing cheese in the past. Hope this changes in the future.
Hi all, I have a few oddly specific questions:
When you save a file from the internet through Chrome/Chromium, does your file picker also open as an unfocused window?
When you have any window open and pinned as "Always on top", and then you open up a new window in Chrome, does it open up on the top of the window stack? Mine opens up all the way in the background but if I use ALT+TAB to cycle through my list of windows, it shows up as if it were second from the top (which is where I want it to be shown as well, but it is not actually there, it's really all the way at the back of the window stack).
Is there anyway that we can fix these issues?
Thank you!
Hi, I have dual boot manjaro gnome and mint. Both have unrar package installed, the only difference is that in mint I can unrar and merge several .part files via nemo file explorer but in manjaro it only extracts i.e. .part1 but doesnβt merge the others into 1 single big file like nemo does. Thanks
It's been a while since I notice this but here on Gnome I can't drag files from nautilus and drop them to any electron or web app created with Edge. While the cursor changes to the one with a plus symbol, when dropping the click the file is not loaded on the final application.
Is this an issue with gnome files or electron apps, have you notice this or am I alone?
Hello, is it possible to get NAUTILUS file manager to:
There is an option sort folders before files but not the opposite one. Any way to do it? Thanks!
As in the title. I can hide the title bar in the settings, but there is a small mismatch of the bar where the address field lies. You can see it in the screenshots. Seemingly a small thing, but terribly annoying.
I am using Ubuntu in a Windows Server environment and there are a few usability improvements that would make file tree navigation much easier. I drew up some pictures of my suggestions here.
The first is the navigation address. You have probably seen the Windows 10 Navigation Bar, where you can click the empty space towards the end to enter an editable address box. If Gnome Files could emulate this, but add a 'root shortcut' feature - where you can change the root directory with a drop-down - it would make sharing file and folder locations much easier
The second is the search function. I find the current search box to be far inferior to the terminal find utility. My suggestion is to add a "Where" dropdown in the search button where you can add regexes for matching files and for determining recursive folder searching.
I'm not sure if Vim can be run natively on ChromeOS. I assume messing with xbindkeys isn't going to be possible, but I haven't looked at the documentation for it yet.
But really, as long as I can get Vim with my settings, this would be perfectly functional.
Before any returns/whys: I don't return gifts, that's just rude. It was a sweet gesture. And I specifically had mentioned around this person at some point that I wanted a cheap laptop that I could feel comfortable taking on flights. I guess they remembered me saying that and got it for me. Didn't really intend for that.
Anyway, just need Vim and Vimrc to work, however I can. Looking around at YouTube, the videos only have like 300 views, so I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I feel like this would be relatively popular.
I would like to avoid the tedious process with the extra steps and just extract every file in the current font be default, the moment I double-click on the compressed file.
I wanna pin files and folders in gnome dock, I googled it but there isn't any extension or something for that.
I'm running Ubuntu 21.10. I removed Nautilus and am currently using Nemo as the file manager. One thing I miss is that with Nautilus, I was able to search for files by pressing the Super key and typing the file name in. The names of files similar to that would be returned by Nautilus.
Is there any way to get Nemo to do this?
Originally this was very fast for me, loading times were a bit slow, but it was still really fast, and now it's just lagging every time I use it. It opens quickly, then slows down as if I'm running 50 programs at once. Need help fixing this
I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 21.10 and I'm quite fond of Dash to Panel but I found that it `favourite/usage` icon for nautilus was broken. I've come from Ubuntu 21.04 and the issue didn't exists there. Each click would open a new instance; the indicator didn't work; and if the window was minimized then it's gone for good.
I found no guides online to resolve the issue but through experimentation, I found the follow steps to work to fix nautilus on Dash to Panel:
This was the steps that I went through to resolve the issue. If you had the same issue and this guide works for you as well, please let me know.
Hello Users,
i finally made the 100% swap from Win10 to Ubuntu 20.04 with Gnome 3.36.8 and everything is working wonderfully. But...^(just a small but...)
I just love my classical Desktop workflow way too much to give up on that. I absolutely love unity dash and how quickly it finds every possible thing on my computer. But sometimes i just want to open my favorite steam games or apps via my Desktop. I figured out how to use .desktop files properly but those little arrow symbols annoy me quite heavily. See screenshot here
Is there a gnome extension or theme thingy that i can apply that gets rid of these?
Thank you in advance and have a great day!
How would I be able to set the default file manager in Gnome? I have been trying but I can't find out how, and it's not an option in the defaults setting. I would like to change the default Gnome Files to pcmanfm. I am on RebornOS which is arch based.
Thoroughly jealous of GNOME Sushi! I thought perhaps this could win me back to GNOME, but Dolphin is awesome, and I'm spoiled by KDE's customization. Just need Quick Look style previews on the space bar. The preview pane doesn't cut it for me, and neither does modifying the mouse-over thumbnail.
Is there any reason why this wouldn't be possible? Might be interested in working on it.
Has anybody found a solution as elegant as GNOME Sushi?
So GNOME seems to work at 59 Hz for some reason and when I use nvidia-settings to change it to 144 Hz and apply it is smooth but when I save the X configuration file and restart it doesn't do anything.I ran nvidia-settings as root and saved the config file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and it is back to 59 Hz after I reboot. For reference saving the X config file on that exact same directory worked for me on KDE
So, I have this problem where I think I've modified the session files for Gnome/GDM such that I can't run Gnome on Wayland. You know, on the gdm login screen where you can choose different sessions - Gnome, Gnome Classic, Gnome-Xorg etc. I've done something there and forgotten exactly what, but something to do with defaulting to Xorg. This leads me to:
Would you help a fella out, please?
I would like to install file-roller, listed as `nixos.gnome.file-roller` when searching in the nixos repos. After changing my configuration.nix to this
environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [
[some_other_stuff...]
gnome.file-roller
];
and doing `sudo nixos-rebuild switch` I see stuff like nautilus getting added. But I do not want that. How can I install file-roller without all the other gnome garbage?
Thanks!
I added Google Drive to online accounts in GNOME, but when I open Files, I am not seeing the linked Google Drive account. Contacts and Calendar sync with Google, so I know everything should be working.
Anyone experienced the same issue? Thanks for any help on this.
