A list of puns related to "Fourth generation fighter"
Let's say aircraft development happens a lot faster than OTL, or something. In this scenario, more advanced aircraft are fielded in time for the war, such as the F-14 Tomcat >!which actually was fielded in OTL, but at the end of U.S. involvement and thus unable to really do anything!<, A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15 Eagle, MiG-29, and Su-27, among others I probably forgot.
I guess they could come in around 1965, during Operation Rolling Thunder. They wouldn't completely replace the other aircraft fielded throughout the war, but they'd still have a sizeable presence to the point that pilots and ground troops engaging them isn't super uncommon.
How would this change the war? Would any of the combatants have an advantage thanks to improved air power? From a more technological aspect, would the war impact their service life or variants? Would other less-advanced aircraft (such as the A-1 Skyraider) be retired sooner?
So I saw in the news that China announced their J-20, a stealth fighter, was 'combat ready' but interestingly enough, I saw that China calls it their 'fourth generation' fighter jet.
In the US and West, we often call our stealth fighters - like the F-22 and F-35 - 'fifth generation' fighter jets.
Historically, has there always been this delineation in generations of fighter jets? For instance, did people in the 60s or 70s recognize new aircraft as a new generation and did they recognize a first generation, second generation, etc.?
And how did we delineate into five generations of fighter jets in the US?
