Background: If there’s one shoe that I would consider my “dream shoe” it’s the JM Weston 180 loafer. I have been drooling over them since I first discovered them. The classic shape, the split toe, the simple elegance, I just love them. But… they’re very pricey, going for anywhere from 700USD to 1000USD, and right now I just can’t justify them. So what did I do? I found what is basically a clone for almost half the price. The penny loafer on the Genova by Carmina appeared to me to be about as close as you can get to JM Weston’s version, for almost half the price. To me, they look basically identical, with some minor differences here and there, but ultimately it was the look I was after, not the brand, so I got the Carminas and have been extremely satisfied and content.
I work in a bank and wear dress shoes every day and these are part of my regular rotation, so they’ve seen fairly regular wear since getting them. Usually once or twice a week since I got them. The soles are starting to get some wear, especially near the toe. I think it has to do with the way I sit in my chair: my seat is up high so it’s usually just the toes that touch the ground when I’m sitting. Either way, I expect to get lots of wear out them before needing a resole.
Ordering: I got these in February 2021, so as of the time of this review they are 4 months old. I ordered these directly from Carmina’s website and they were promptly shipped and delivered. Carmina did not give me a shipping notification or tracking link which was annoying but they did ship them quickly and deliver to the United States was quick too so I can’t complain too much. The only communication from Carmina was an initial email telling me they are processing the order. From there they were completely silent until they arrived at my door.
Sizing: The Genova last is very narrow, so be aware if you have wider feet that it might not be a good fit for you. I am an 8.5 US and these are a 7 UK. I ordered a different pair of Carmina’s in my UK size previously and they were slightly too big, so I returned them and learned my lesson with the Genova last to go half size down from my UK size. I was walking along a path in a vibrant garden-like forest. I came across a small creek, filled with aquatic plants. George W. Bush walked up across the creek and began pointing out his favorite plants. He then showed me to a memorial garden. At the front was a large dark cyan coffin with gold accents. He opened it up and gestured me inside. There was a fluffy blanket, it had been made to hold someone comfortably. I walked up and got inside, laying down and wrapping myself in the blanket. George Bush approached the coffin and explained what was going on. There had been a mass spread of a disease that decays the body rapidly. I had been one of many selected to stay hidden from the disease in hopes of repopulating the world after. He then closed the lid and walked back to the creek.
As I get comfortable I notice an array of holes near the seam of the lid. They differ between two sizes. The larger ones can be used as peepholes. I move to look where George had gone. He is laying bright red bricks in a section of a road. The road is placed where the creek was. I lift the lid and call out to him. He looks up and waves. He warns me that there are people who want to steal the coffin, and that he is helping to complete the road for them. I close the lid and lie back down. Just then an entourage of black vans approach the garden with a large crane in tow. As people begin to surround the area I still myself. They attach the coffin to the crane and lift it into the air. As it lifts into the air the lid swings open. I manage to keep my balance. Looking down, there is a large crowd gathered at the garden entrance. Near the crane I see four people, they are huddled together talking. None of them seem to notice me, except one. He is large, dark skinned and muscular. He has a scar over one eye with the other seeming to glow. We lock eyes for a second, and I realize that he noticed me. I lean my weight and twist the coffin around, using the momentum to close the lid. After a minute the coffin lowers and is put into the back of one of the vans.
I wake up in the coffin. Its nighttime and all I hear is the van driving. Looking through the peepholes I notice three people sitting on opposite sides of the coffin. Two men and a woman. One the right side a man is slumped over, sleeping. Next to him is a woman. She’s staring out of the window. The man from earlier is looking down at the coffin. His eyebrow raises and I creep back to the middle of the coffin. Aft
