Suggestion: Rabbit Proof Fence (2002) Australia's history separating aboriginal kids from their families for the sake of the race's 'betterment' explored by the director of Patriot Games, Quiet American and The Giver

Drama. Australia. Three mixed-race girls are torn brutally from their Aboriginal mother and sent over a thousand miles away to a training camp for domestic workers as part of a government policy to integrate them into white society. Linking the camp and their distant home territory is a vast rabbit-proof fence, which stretches from one coast to another and just might help the girls find their way back.

CSLWoodward1: #17 Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002)

Watched on 26/3/21.

Yes, I highly recommend this. This is one of those eye opening films that sheds light on the atrocities of history and the lengths people will go to just to avoid the hell that we put them through. The film is well made, well acted and shows just how vehemently evil people can be. Watch this film.

In Australia, there's this thing called "The White Australia Policy" where for about 100 years (in all likelihood, longer) Indigenous people were forced to adapt to white people's way of life. While many of the mistreatments still linger in today's society, between 1905 to around 1970, Indigenous children were forcibly taken away from their parents. In Western Australia, a man named A. O. Neville was legally the sole guardian of every Aborigine in the state, which meant he would legal force mixed-race children into camps where their indigenous heritage would be bred out of existence over multiple generations. These people are now referred to as "The Stolen Generation".

This is what that film is about. It is based on a true story.

Please watch this film.

In a Australian film called 'Rabbit Proof Fence', the film's antagonist, Neville, is elaborating on his view that if whites and half-castes (a child born of Aboriginal and Caucasian parents) marry, the Aboriginal blood would be stamped out by the third generation of the resulting marriage.

Specifically, he says that as the white blood infiltrates reproduction of half-castes, there will be no traces of 'native origin' by the third generation. As a example, he shows a image of a half-blood grandmother, a quadroon (one-quarter-black) daughter and octoroon (one eighth black). The octoroon is depicted as fully white, with Neville himself saying 'no trace of native origin is apparent)

My question is: was this ever a aim of the Stolen Generations-era Australian government, to have half-castes be bred out over the course of three generations until the resulting third generation is only one-eighth black?

What was the point if the Rabbit-proof fence in Western Australia?

It was meant to keep desert rabbits from getting into farms and eating all their crops.

But the rabbits were already on the wrong side of the fence. They could reproduce and naturalize with or without a fence.

Also rabbits could hop on trucks or pack animals and get in cane toad-style.

So all-in-all, it seems hardly effective. Indeed, it's no longer maintained and is mostly a historical relic today. So why was it built in the first place?
