Hololens Video: MEMS Mirror with Bragg Polarization Gratings applies 2013 MVIS Patent?

If you stop the Hololens MWC teaser video at exactly time 0:20, a split second before the suggested flexture collides with the suggested mirror, you can see a pattern of etchings on the suggested mirror surface.

As I am accustomed to assuming a smooth mirror surface, I initially thought this pointed away from the object being a MEMS mirror.

However, a review of Sihui He's 2016 MSFT patent application for a MEMS mirror system with expanded field of view suggests it is in fact a MEMS mirror.

Recall, that application expands the FOV by applying Bragg gratings to the mirror surface which causes polarized light to refract at greater or lesser angles. By using differently polarized light for separate parts of the image, the image light reflects off the mirror into a larger overall FOV.

>Abstract > >A MEMS laser scanner is disclosed for use in a near-eye display including an increased field of view (FOV). In embodiments, one or more polarization gratings may be applied to the mirror of the MEMS laser scanner, which polarization gratings may be configured according to the Bragg regime. Using light of different polarizations, the MEMS laser scanner is able to expand the FOV without increasing the range over which the mirror of the scanner oscillates.

Note, at Figure 5 is an example drawing of a magnified Bragg polarization grating.

>FIG. 5 is a magnified view showing liquid crystal molecular orientation within a Bragg polarization grating for use in the first embodiment of the present technology. > >... > >FIG. 5 is a magnified view of an example of a BPG 170 and 171including a plurality of sub-layers 172 having liquid crystal molecules 174 (one of which is numbered). As noted in Published Patent No. 2016/0033698 to Escuti, the sub-layers 172 may be multiple, stacked polymerized nematic liquid crystal sub-layers formed by patterning thin films with optical anisotropy. In particular, the liquid crystal sub-layers 172 may have local optical axes, which may be defined by liquid crystal molecule 174 orientations that are aligned through a thickness of the sub-layers and across interfaces between the sub-layers.

While Fig. 5 is a drawing, you can clearly see an analogous pattern on the MSFT video.

What is especially interesting about the MSFT patent is that, as has been mentioned before, it cites Microvision directly.

OPTICAL SYSTEM STEERING VIA BRAGG GRATING SHEAR - MSFT Application

Looks like this one slipped through the cracks a few weeks ago!

OPTICAL SYSTEM STEERING VIA BRAGG GRATING SHEAR

TLDR -

>Assignee - Microsoft, > >Published: Nov. 22, 2018 > >Filing Date: May 22, 2017 > >20180338122

>ABSTRACT > >An optical system includes a light source, a film positioned to be illuminated by light from the light source, the film including a plurality of Bragg gratings configured to redirect the light, and an actuator configured to apply a shearing force to the film. The shearing force manipulates an orientation of the plurality of Bragg gratings to change an extent to which the plurality of Bragg gratings redirects the light and to thereby re-position a pupil at which the light converges after redirection by the plurality of Bragg gratings.

TLDR

  • Lasers + Near eyes display wide FOV + Digilens connection (possibly?)

>[0073] The projector 602 may include one or more lasers or other light sources. In the example of FIG. 6, the projector 602 includes a single laser 614. The projector 602 may also include one or more liquid crystal layers, as described above. In this example, the projector 602 includes a liquid crystal grating 616 and a liquid crystal display 618. The liquid crystal display 618 may include or be configured as a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) or other LC or other device. > >[0093] The steering films described herein may be integrated into various types of optical systems and electronic devices. For instance, the steering film may be combined with a collimated backlight so as to create a display that uses very little optical power. The steering film may be combined with a three-dimensional or other virtual image so as to steer the pupil of that image to follow the viewer. A wide field of view may be achieved without having to resort to undesirably large displays, which may be useful in realizing head-mounted and other portable displays. The steering film may also be combined with a wedge periscope so as to steer the position of the point towards which captured rays travel prior to deflection.

How does fiber grating achieve mode coupling in optical fibers?

I've read some papers about using fiber gratings to cause mode conversion from the fundamental mode to the higher modes. I am trying to understand the physics behind the gratings. From what I gathered, it is the periodic changes in the refractive index that cause the coupling between the modes but I don't understand how it is caused.

What's a Fiber Grating Interrogator?

Hello fellow engineers, I've been out in China the last year and a half teaching some undergrad engineering classes. The contract is ending soon and I'm looking to put in a research proposal for when I get back home.

The running idea is to continue a project we had going a few years ago, building a car to enter the Shell Eco marathon. The big thing that's left to do is the outer shell, so this is mainly a fluids project.

The rough outline is design a shell, that fits our current frame and adheres to the competition rules, test it in CFD, validate in PIV, and then finally build it.

The head of department suggested that we have "Fiber Grating Interogrator" (fiber bragg grating?) that can be used to measure the actual drag of the real body. I've never heard of this! From a Google I did I found that they are fiber optic cables that can measure strain. From that we can calculate the load in the body and the drag? Does anyone have experience with them?

Ideally we'd be able to actually integrate them into the final body. Can the fibers be integrated into a fiberglass or carbon fiber sheet?

Any experience or suggestions you have for this would be hugely appreciated! I've never written a research proposal before so I'm trying to be as detailed as possible before hand. Also we only came up with the idea for it on Friday and the applications close on Thursday, so I'm kinda of crash courseing here.

TL;DR Writing my first research proposal. Wondering if you have any experience with fiber grating interrogator/ fiber bragg grating? Can I integrate it with fiber glass and then measure the strain on a cars body in real time/real world use? Any general research proposal advice?

Finally, hopefully this is ok by the sub rules. It's not homework and not undergrad related really. Really just need clarification on what fiber grating interrogators are.

IMO: 3rd Grades preformances of HIP and LIKEY were grating on the ears

Oh Jieun and Kim Yunseo were the only ones who fit the song and had stable vocals. Lee Taerim and Choi Yoonjung were the ones who stood out the most (to me) in a bad way. They tried too hard to try to fit the originals, like karaoke singing rather than singing in their own voices, and Yoonjung has proven again to be a strong dancer but not stable vocalist. This is my personal opinion of course.

MIL grating on me with overstepping, fertility issues - how do I assert boundaries without snapping or offending her?

OK so I want to preface this by noting my in-laws are generally lovely people and have been welcoming to me, are generous, and I do love them and am grateful for them. However, my partner and I have been trying to conceive for two years and started using interventions after just a few months since we realized we were having problems due to my lack of a menstrual cycle after removing my IUD.

Things did not go as planned and after 9 months of fertility drugs, we escalated to an IVF clinic where I underwent multiple surgeries, a failed IUI, and two failed embryo transfers. Throughout this, we had been pretty open with family and friends with our process but as we encountered increasing difficulties, I began to struggle with people asking for or even demanding updates, asking rude or insensitive questions, etc. Not only did I feel increasing like I was on "womb watch" and didn't always want to discuss the state of my reproductive organs, but often these texts or comments would land after a recent failure, each of which has gotten successively more stressful and heartbreaking.

Due to this, I asked my partner to stop giving detailed updates to his family as a default, and I did the same with mine. He also expressed to them not to randomly text me messages about it all, etc. I also scaled back convos with friends etc and asked several people to cool it.

Over last summer, we were expected to go on a week-long rural vacation with in-laws, which I was already stressed about due to timing IVF cycles. My husband planned this with MIL without me, and we have since discussed this and he has not done that again. Come to find out youngest nibling is Covid positive and they were having her go anyway - so we opted out. At this point, we hadn't seen inlaws in a year and half, and I knew his mom was very distraught. He asked if he could go visit them for a long weekend after a business trip - which also happened to be occurring for the entirety of my "2-week wait" after my 1st embryo transfer. So I was solo the whole time and alone when I found out the transfer had failed - he tried at the last minute to get a flight to come home to me but couldn't and was with his parents. I was devastated and was really struggling. This was a low point and I know he won't do that again. I also know details were discussed in my absence, which I didn't mind because I was not impacted.

Then the in-laws invited themselves out for a long weekend a month later as I am heading into what wa
