A list of puns related to "FIDO Alliance"
For those of you not up to date on this, the FIDO Alliance is the organization that maintains the U2F standard and is partnered with the W3C on implementing it as WebAuthn. Basically, they are an important player in making multi-factor authentication better and more widely used.
YubiKey released a new model of security key with a Lightning connector back in August 2019; then Apple rolled out WebAuthn support in Safari on macOS in September 2019; then Apple rolled out WebAuthn support in iOS 13.3 in November 2019.
Now, Apple is listed as a board-level member of the FIDO Alliance itself.
While this doesn't say anything in particular with 100% certainty, I'm excited at the prospect of Apple deciding to push WebAuthn as hard as they can. While their absence from FIDO has been notable for several years now, they seem to be making steps in the right direction.
With Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and now Apple all board-level members, I personally hope to see more instances of U2F baked directly into devices. If smartphones and laptops have built-in U2F keys similar to the Google Pixelbook from 2018, that means users can finally have the ability to lock down their online accounts to only certain devices. People that would never have gone out and purchased a YubiKey would have the ability to enable their email provider's hardware authentication simply by using their laptop or smartphone. Ultimately, this means a large majority of the world's users could become completely immune to phishing.
Yes, I know we're all skeptical of using products from those particular companies. I'm not saying you should be excited to buy an iPhone 13 so you can use FaceID to authenticate to your Gmail account, but I'm excited because this will protect the privacy and security of billions of people who were going to be buying those products anyway. If you can't force them to stop using smartphones and Gmail, you can at least be happy for them for locking down their Gmail so that they can't get scammed or have their emails read by their nosy roommate anymore.
WebAuthn has become an official web standard for logins, the World Wide Web Consortium and the FIDO Alliance said Monday.#infosec#cybersecurityhttps://t.co/F0OQuB0nVm
