A list of puns related to "Expanded universe"
Introduction β What is the Doctor Who EU and why is it different from other franchises
Doctor Who is far from the only franchise to have an expanded universe. There are many other franchises that share such a concept, Star Trek and Star Wars to name two.
But Doctor Whoβs EU is very different from the EUβs of other franchises in a core way that makes a Star Wars Legends style erasure of the EU not only a bad idea, not only actively harmful to the franchise, but would likely entirely kill Doctor Who.
The first and most obvious reason why Doctor Whoβs EU is different from others is that there is no defined canon in Doctor Who. In franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars, canon is defined such that the central seminal works override all supplementary ones, with other forms of media being entirely subservient to the main work.
Doctor Who is different, Doctor Whoβs EU is not subservient to the show, to make this obvious I need only point to the Virgin New Adventures, which were considered at the time the undeniable official continuation of Classic Doctor Who. The VNAs were Doctor Who from 1990-1996, every single major fan or official body agreed such a thing.
Now, one might bring up the BBCβs policy that βA TV Show must not require any supplementary material to be completeβ and argue that said policy qualifies as an indicator that the TV show is in some way superior or βmore validβ but that restriction is not one borne from the creative team, merely a studio mandated accessibility clause. This is evidenced by the fact that, in spite of this, the TV Show still does reference the EU explicitly and undeniably in multiple instances. (See the bottom of this post for examples)
Now, some want to draw a line between the TV and non-TV content by virtue of medium and consider the TV content more valid for that reason. But there is no non-arbitrary justification for that. For instance, the idea that Zygon: When Being You Isnβt Enough is a piece of TV content and is therefore more valid than President Romana or Bernice Summerfield is completely nonsense.
And if you try to limit it to specifically βThe Doctor Who TV Showβ to exclude the BBV content, and thus also kicking out Torchwood, SJA and Class. Then what is your justification for considering both New and Classic Who canon? Since both New Who and Classic Who are entirely separate shows and Classic in no way references New Who in any way, whilst New frequently references both Classic and the EU. Making any re

They've had better luck with TV shows, but for every Mandalorian, we get a Sequel Trilogy. For some, the first warning sign of Disney lousing the franchise up was their decision to remove the Expanded Universe from canon.
I was inspired to do this rant when The Book Of Boba Fett premiered. Some people think that making Boba an antihero neutered his badassery. Others pointed out that Boba didn't have much personality to begin with. He just had a cool design, and he wasn't that badass to begin with since Vader did most of the work to capture Han before Han made a pinata out of him. Then the naysayers responded with "you obviously didn't read the Expanded Universe.". Of course, that reopened the EU can of worms.
"Of course Disney removed the Expanded Universe," the naysayers said. "Following it would imply effort went into this". However, one question has been on my mind lately: who cares about the Expanded Universe besides a bunch of turbo nerds? Ask a casual who only watched the movies or the TV shows, and how many of them know who Mara Jade or Jacen Solo are? Disney didn't remove the Expanded Universe because they were lazy. They removed it because the casual filmgoers would be confused.
Up until Disney bought Star Wars, there was well over 30 years worth of comics, novels, and video games. If the sequel trilogy followed them, audiences would be wondering "who is that red haired chick and why does she have Luke's old saber?", or "wait, Chewie died? When and why was it offscreen?", or "Palpatine came back before? Why didn't we see that?"
This would be like if Marvel made an Avengers movie, but instead of being in its own continuity, it was in continuity with the comics. There is no introduction movie for Iron Man or Captain America. You have to read 60 years worth of comics to understand the story. Yeah, that might not work.
Erasing the EU was the logical answer to keep things simple. Lucasfilm at least knew there was still love for the EU, since they would reintroduce Thrawn, the Dark Saber, and Boba Fett's escape from the Sarlac.
Sure, there was this one video game, one (very short) series of graphic novels, and who could forget when Turok first took flight, but why isnβt there much else?
Feels like this universe is tailor-made for an animated series, EU novels, etc. (Maybe thatβs the reason why thereβs this sentiment of "no one talks about 'tar" anymore?) Is this just Jimmy Cameron being very "itβs all about da moviesh"?
.
I am reading all of the Expanded Universe from the battle of Endor onwards. I started with The Truce at Bakura. I have to say, I am in love with the X-Wing story. I am currently on book 4, the Bacta War. I feel like this is a proper continuation, and I prefer it to the sequels immensely. I havenβt even got to the Thrawn or NJO books everyone talks about so heavily and with acclaim. I guess Iβm just making this post to appreciate how the Expanded Universe is such an intricate and lovingly crafted thing. I really feel a passion again for the franchise, and itβs come from reading a bunch of old books from the 90s! With no pictures!
Like... the Yuuzhan what now? Lol. Who's Darth Krayt? I thought the Sith went extinct when Sidious and Vader died (cause of the Rule of Two). What's the Galactic Alliance Remnant?
Can someone fill me in on what happened after ROTJ for EU material? I'm kinda curious.
So right now there arent a lot of other movies or franchises that connect to Indy.
That is, until you look at the theme parks.
For those who dont know, Indiana Jones Adventure, Temple of the Forbidden Eye, is canon. Im not sure how, but I believe Offhand Disney made a video that connects a lot of Disneyland rides. I cant specifically remember, but I do know that pirates of the carribean, haunted mansion, and space mountain all find a way into this weird web. Another thing to consider is that the ark of the covenant once appeared in galaxys edge. There are more links to star wars, like the crystal skull appearing in a clone wars episode. But all this leads down to the fact that in the same universe as Indiana Jones, are grim grinning ghosts, Jack sparrow, space stations, Jedi and Sith, and... jungle cruises. Yep, acording to this logic, the jungle cruise exists in this universe. The ride, not the movie.
What do you think about the Theme Park theory?
One thing I love about this theory, is that the Ark could be not just a supernatural power, but something from beyond the stars! Maybe thats why R2D2 and C3PO appeared in the Tannis hyrogliphics...
I was in GCPD looking at the evidence lockers and I saw items from some villains who I'm pretty sure aren't in the game. (Guessing at the very least). Is there any story filler for what happened to them after City? Example: Batman donated Electrocutioner's gloves for display and he hasn't been seen since. Is there canon about what happened to him?
Thanks again!
So I've written and thought of my own fair share of rewrites for the Sequel Trilogy. About a month ago I did upload an overview of a potential rewrite I had to this sub, but when it came to actually writing it, I struggled as there was a lot of backstory and characters that made the overall plot feel messy. As such, I've started to rewrite the plot to make it more focused and deleted that last post, while still keeping some of the framework I initially had.
For this rewrite, I want to keep many of the story details that were present in the Sequel Trilogy we got (as there were quite a few elements I like from it). At the same time, I wanna take inspiration from the Legends material with a combination of my own ideas to create a new story (kind of like how the creative team behind superhero movies take concepts and storylines from various comic books as the basis of a new story).
Backstory / World Building
Characters
The following include the cast of characters for this trilogy along with some fan castings that I've thought of. The villains will be talked about in a separate section in more detail:
So I've been getting tired of a lot of the Disney Canon stuff and want to go back to the Old Expanded Universe. I just read Heir to the Empire and am working my way through the Thrawn Trilogy.
Do yall know of good Expanded Universe stories / media to dive into? Can be comics, novels, games from the good ol EU. I'm statving for some good creative Star Wars stories. The new stuff just ain't doing it for me.
For Context: I grew up at the tail end of the EU before Disney took over. I've already played The Force Unleashed games, KOTOR games, Republic Commando, Jedi Knight games as well.
Which verse will win and why?
I just started dipping into the larger Halo universe and it is insanely huge. Seriously, the amount of lore is probably large enough to compete with Star Trek or something. The games cover maybe 5% of everything overall. Given this fact, and also the fact that ODST was huge fun, do you see the EU ever being used for future games? I know Halo Wars did that a bit but will we ever get another first person game that doesn't follow the Chief?
What about the show? I believe they are starting at the beginning with the battle against the Covenant on the first ring, but if we're lucky enough that the show is successful, maybe they could also cover stories outside of the Chief?
I started with Shadows of Reach. I pulled it off of a shelf in Indigo, just for something to do on the flight to a vacation in October. I couldnβt stop. I then bought the Fall of Reach, then New Blood, then Devine Wind when it came out. Now Iβm just finishing up the Kilo 5 trilogy, and Iβm genuinely addicted to the story. Iβm playing Halo Infinite right now, and Iβm honestly feeling like I enjoy reading the books more than playing the games. There so much more detail to flush out. I also feel like they do a much better job humanizing characters like Naomi, better than they ever did for Cheif, in the games. Black Box is currently my favourite AI, more than Cortana ever was.
Does anybody else feel like this when it comes to the books?
Sorry for the rambling post, just expressing my love for the series, that Iβm sure you all have.

**not counting clone wars characters or others like ventress, thrawn, arc trooper or darktrooper (characters that originated in the eu but their appearance in game is not the same as their origin)
knights of the old republic- 13 characters (jedi knight revan, bastila shan, jolee bindo, juhani, carth onasi, canderous ordo, mission vao, zaalbar, t3-m4, darth revan, fallen bastila, malak, hk-47)
knights of the old republic II- 4 characters (visas marr, darth traya, darth nihilus, darth sion)
the old republic- 3 characters (sith marauder, sith empire trooper, sith assassin)
to come-
the force unleashed- starkiller
shadows of the empire- dash rendar
this is what we want, and itβs a good start, letβs hope they follow up with even more content like this
And it's so clear that Palpatine will win. The question is how exactly and what he will do with the rebels.
P.S The reaction of others is interesting. Palpatine-Aerys who tortures enemies with force lightining. Heh!
Basically anything apart from the movies (or maybe the TV show). Books, comics, games etc
I personally like comics and am hoping with the new movie they will publish at least some stuff like they did with the short-lived 'Indiana Jones Adventures' when Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out.
They could bring back characters easily in the comics, so we could get more on Short Round, and I'd love to see more of Indy's and Belloq's history.
We know we're getting the game from Bethesda and don't know anything about it yet so who knows... The Indy games don't have the best track record imo, the best one is Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. I would have absolutely loved to see Telltale Games have a crack at an Indy game and maybe something like that could still be done. I would like to see a plot-heavy adventure game type.
So is there anything you'd like them to do with the franchise? Cartoons maybe aimed at a younger audience? Something like the Star Wars cartoons? An another crack at a live action tv show?

Sophia Marinos looked up from the kitchen table with tired eyes. Her teenage son Adam had just come bouncing into the house. Sheβd heard the car screeching to a halt outside and steeled herself for his energy, but even with the time to brace herself he practically bowled her over with his enthusiastic presence.
She sighed and adjusted the wig on her head. It wasnβt his fault. She was exhausted all of the time these days. She put a smile on her face as he leaned in for a quick hug.
βWhat is it, Adam?β

Her son waved away her objections. βWhatever, it doesnβt matter.β
βIt absolutely does matter!β Sophia scanned her sonβs ears for the glint of jewelry, and was relieved to see that they appeared undamaged. βI donβt care whatβs cool these days, Iβm not going to have my son going around with pierced ears.β
Adam looked down his nose at her, an expression that always made him look uncannily like his father. βIβm a legal adult now. I can do what I want.β
βAnd if what you want is to keep living under this roof, you can do what I say.β
βAnyway! Look, it doesnβt matter. It didnβt take.β
βWell, Iβm glad to hear that.β Sophia closed her eyes, massaging her temples.

Sophiaβs eyes jumped to the knife, which still held a smear of red at the tip. βHow did you do that?β
βThe same thing happened when Jeff pierced my ear. The pin went through, he pulled it back out, no hole. It was mega weird! We did it like five or six times. I could feel it, but the dam

I don't understand univerae expansion as a previous question got the answer "it was always infinite" but if it's expanding wouldn't that mean it's finite but can continue to expand? And if it IS expanding what's over the wall? It has to be SOMETHING there. Would it be anti-matter???
Hello, i've the original battlefront 2 and i wanted to know what kind of mods that show the empire in its early stages of existence, when the clones still have the phase II clone armor and DC-15 blasters, clone wars era vehicles, darth vader\sidious, order 66 and purge missions, the minor rebellions.
Also some mods that change the blaster sound to the movie clone blaster and adds the clone assassins from the SW:ROTS as playable units.
Would you say you enjoyed it better than the DT? If so, what parts did you like? And if you didn't, why not?
