Absorption of chemicals by crop plants from river water?

How much do plants absorb and concentrate pollutants from river water where it is not safe to eat the fish?

I water my plants with river water downstream of a population of about 3 million people, Geneva, Lyon and other cities. It's a typical European ex-industrial waterway, where the fish shouldnt be consumed because of PCB's and other chemicals.

I don't just grow food plants, people also smoke some of the plants that I grow, like magic flowers. Biomagnification by plants is minimal, and the same water is used to irrigate all the local corn and wheat and apples.

Physical Water Conditioning Methods - Magnetic/Electrolytic/Electrostatic/Electromagnetic/Magnetic - Preferences/Recommendations

Hi all,

I have been asked to clarify options for a client, where a contractor has proposed two different methods of physical water conditioning, at two different costs.

Having checked through CIBSE Guide G - Public Health, and lists out the methods as follows:

  • Magnetic: these use a magnetic field and are suitable for protection of individual appliances but the effect does not last.
  • Electrolytic: these prevent scale forming by use of dissolved metal (usually zinc or iron).
  • Electrostatic: in these, an electric field is created by flow of water through the conditioner.
  • Electromagnetic: a strong magnetic field is generated, which is much stronger than the simple magnetic devices.
  • Electronic: by generating a low power electrical current, controlled by a microprocessor, a variable electrical field is developed in the water that prevents build-up of scale.

I have not seen any recommendations (apart from manufacturer specific) that details the use of these devices. Is there any guidance for when/where each would be most appropriate/best performing?

Thanks!

BIAB Grain Absorption/Water Question

Hi All, sorry if this has been asked before. I recently had my first brew (BIAB), but forgot to account for how much the grains would absorb the mash water. I was doing a full volume mash (6 gallons) and then ended up with around 4.75 gallons after removing the grains. My question is, if my target to boil was at 6 gallons. Is it ok to refill with fresh water into the Kettle to get to that target? Does it screw up anything?

Does Removing Trees Change Water Absorption in a Yard?

Having a big tree removed from our front yard - curious if it's removal will impact water "drainage"?

Curious in general but for me personally - I was thinking that the tree normally drank a ton of water - will that all sit in our ground now? Slightly concerned because we have a horizontal crack in our basement that I don't want to get worse if more water is in the ground when it freezes/heaves...

Can we improve the absorption of mescaline by consuming it with pH 9.5+ alkaline water?

So we know that MDMA and Mescaline are both phenethylamines.

We also know that MDMA, being an amphetamine (derivative) is believed by many to be better absorbed with alkaline water or tums etc.

Could it be possible that a similar effect can be achieved with mescaline, despite it not being an amphetamine (derivative)...and instead just another phenethylamine?

I am guessing no β€” since it is not an amphetamine or derivative, but want to ask anyway in the interest of curiosity.

i.e: Are you aware of any anecdotal (or scientific) reports of mescaline being better absorbed with alkaline water or tums or even invariably better absorbed with an acidic compound such as vinegar or O.J?

Would building a small absorption refrigeration unit at home by myself be dangerous?(Ammonia/Water unit)

Basically as the title states. I got down a rabbit hole earlier today and started reading about refrigeration. I understand how the basic concept works with a compression refrigeration system, but then stumbled upon absorption refrigeration. It seems like it would be good for a variety of uses, and being that it doesn't need any external input other than heat, seems like it could be a reliable source of refrigeration in a SHTF scenario. I would like to possibly build one myself to ensure I understand the principles and operation, but want to make sure it isn't dangerous.
