A poem about Dyfnwal Frych (Donald the Freckled), a King from the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata in Ulster and Western Scotland, his fate was recorded in the 'Y Gododdin'.
I saw an array that came from Pentir,
And bore themselves splendidly around the conflagration.
I saw a second one, rapidly descending from their township,
Who had risen at the word of the grandson of Nwython.
I saw great sturdy men who came with the dawn,

And the head of Dyfnwal Frych, ravens gnawed it.

Gwelais i ddull o Bentir a ddoyn,
A berth am goelcerth a ymddygyn.
Gwelais i ddau og eu tre re rygwyddyn,
O air wyr Nwython rygodesyn.

McInnis/ Óengus/ Dál Riata (also Dalriada or Dalriata) Information

Hi!

I live in Ottawa, Canada. I come from a family in northern ontario that knows nothing our of past generations ("we just didn't ask those kind of questions!" my grandmother used to say). I am trying to research my last name - McInnis.

Apparently we are first from Morven (which doesn't seem to exist anymore?).

Does anyone know anything about where this is? Or really anything about this kingdom/ my family origins?

I'd like to go visit there someday! Where I live McInnis is an extremely rare family name :)

Thanks!

Origin of the word 'Sassenach'

Some time ago I was reading a Scotland related writing and I found the word 'Sassenach' there. Since then I have been curious as to why there is a word in Scottish Gaelic that is used to call the English which refers to the Saxons who lived in the southern part of the island, rather than the Angles who lived near Scottish lands.

Where's Éire?

Is there any particular reason Ireland hasn't made it into any of the Civilization games yet.

I understand that the Celts were present in many of the previous games, but I'm sure many will acknowledge that this solution was blunt and nonsensical at best - Boudicca's Iceni tribe had little ties to the Irish culture that endured into the middle ages and beyond. Scotland has been added in Civ VI, and in spite of extensive ties between Scotland and Ireland throughout history (see Dál Riata etc.) and the commonalties between the Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages, they are hardly one and the same as cultures!

For a small nation on the peripheries of Europe, Ireland has left an indelible mark on western civilization - its moniker as the Isle of Saints and Scholars was well deserved when the Western Roman Empire collapsed, as Irish monks were responsible in reintroducing Christianity to the disparate barbarian kingdoms - many of the ancient Christian texts that endure to this day still exist on account of the tireless efforts of Irish monks in hallowed locations such as Clonmacnoise. Saint Columbanus was referred to by Pope Benedict XVI as the 'Father of Europe,' when he settled monasteries in numerous locations throughout Europe such as at Bobbio, in Italy.

The Irish resisted Viking invasions; assimilated the Norman culture to such a degree that those lords retrospectively were dubbed 'more Irish than the Irish themselves'; fought back against British rule for centuries, eventually winning for themselves that hard sought-after independence; and that doesn't even begin to acknowledge the rich culture, unique musical and linguistic tradition, and Ireland's successful efforts to ensure the continuity of this ancient culture into the modern day - Irish is one of the oldest languages in all of Europe that is still spoken today, younger only than Greek!

More recently, Ireland has produced such literary and musical geniuses as James Joyce (suggested on occasion as perhaps the finest writer in English of all time for his seminal work Ulysses, and other stories such as Dubliners), W.B. Yeats, Samuel Beckett, and G.B Shaw (who is often believed to have such an impressive body of work in theatre to be second only to Shakespeare himself in terms of impact in that field!).

The vast Irish diaspora too has been instrumental in the development of world culture today also - one need only look at the current American president to see evidence of that in action!

I love

Fellow Connors, have you ever wondered about the origin/meaning of our name?

"Connor is an Irish male given name, anglicised from the compound Irish word "Conchobhar", meaning "Lover of wolves” or "Lover of hounds". Its popularity likely derived from the name of Conchobar mac Nessa, a semi-legendary king of Ulster in Dál Riata described in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology."

We are kings.

[On Parts and Precedence] - Chapter 5: Change of Hands and Chapter 6: Distress

5. Change of Hands

“Where are you going?” Sir Balan said to his brother, who was found walking in the opposite direction of their home.

“Mother is insane,” Balin huffed as he kept right on walking.

“She can be from time to time,” Sir Balan admitted. “Are you alright? You left real suddenly just now.”

Balin stopped in his tracks.

“You just don’t get it,” Balin said. “Life treats you fairly, brother. But as for me, nothing ever goes my way. Ever.”

“That’s not true,” Sir Balan replied.

“It is,” Balin said. “It seriously, and sadly, is true.”

“Well, I know one way to make sure things go your way,” Sir Balan said, trying to encourage his brother. “Training! Come on, let’s train. So that maybe things do go your way. In single combat, at least.”

Sir Balan picked up a dead branch and neatly lopped off the twigs that protruded from it with his sword.

“Now?” Balin whined.

“You better hurry,” Sir Balan warned. “Or I’ll start striking you regardless of whether you are armed or not.”

Balin sulked as he selected a particularly big stick, then drew his rusty sword and began to chop away at the branches with the dull blade.

“I’ll show you a little trick I recently learned from Sir Lanceor,” Sir Balan said and lashed the stick at Balin.

Balin backed up just out of reach of the strike.

“Hey!” he cried out.

“Go on,” Sir Balan said, holding his stick aloft. “At me.”

Balin rose his stick, then sliced down at his brother.

Sir Balan deftly sidestepped and parried the incoming stick, and sent his back hand down towards Balin’s lead hand and yanked the sword away with his own stick pointed at his brother’s chest.

Balin released the stick to avoid falling into the point before him.

Sir Balan stood before his brother, holding both sticks with a grin.

“Pretty neat, isn’t it?” Sir Balan asked with a smirk as he threw Balin’s stick back at him. “Now, you try.”

Balin grabbed the stick from the air, then held it out before him in his hands.

They circled one another for a moment, then Sir Balan swung down as he stepped forward, and Balin stepped aside and deflected the downward blow with his raised stick. Balin reached out with a hand and disarmed his brother, just like his brother did to him a moment ago.

Sir Balan backed off from Balin with his hands raised.

“Very good!” he said, grinning at his brother’s quick progress. “Practice it. It’s a good thing to be able to pull off. Now, let’s try it with real blades.”

Sir Balan threw down his stick and drew hi

How were medieval royal houses formed? Was it usually a case of a warrior distinguishing himself in battle, being crowned on his merits, and then having his title passed to his descendants until the founder's merit-based claim was forgotten? If yes, how did people justify his descendants...

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

For those that ask why the Welsh hated the Saxons so much

I have made a blog post of all battles etc that involved the Welsh in the middle ages. It is 66 pages long.

The Saxons and Saxon age which included the Vikings took up a large part of the timeline. For example. Bellow is the dates that Wales have been invaded. The Welsh also invaded parts of England just as much.

The Saxons never conquered Wales and it took the normans 200 years and armies of over 30,000.

The Battle of Chester where the Anglo Saxons beat native Britons near the city of Chester,. Æthelfrith of Northumbria annihilated a combined force from the Welsh kingdoms of Powys, Rhôs, and Mercia. It resulted in the deaths of Welsh leaders Selyf Sarffgadau of Powys and Cadwal Crysban of Rhôs. Evidence suggests that King Iago of Gwynedd may have also been killed.According to Bede, a large number of monks from the monastery at Bangor on Dee who had come to witness the fight were killed on the orders of Æthelfrith before the battle. He told his warriors to massacre the clerics because although they bore no arms, they were praying for a Northumbria defeat. The battle's led to the severing of the land connection between Wales and the Old North
