I made a terrible discovery in our attic and I no longer trust my family.

Our lake house has always had a strange smell, an almost nauseatingly sweet odor that lingers in every corner and is impossible to ignore. When we first started coming here, it really bothered me and I often asked my parents if we could somehow get rid of it. They told me it wasn't that bad and attributed it to the fact that the house was built over 60 years ago. β€˜It gives the house character’, they said (our guests did not agree). Over time, I guess I have gotten used to it. However, since we arrived today, it has been so bad that it’s almost unbearable. For this reason, I’ve mostly stayed in the backyard, only coming inside when it’s time for dinner.

Outside, it’s almost completely quiet. The place has a stillness that I love, a welcoming break from living in a major city. I often sit in the backyard for hours looking over the lake. It is said to be so deep that 80 percent of it has yet to be explored. This fact has always unsettled me. When I was young, my father would take me out sailing and I would avoid looking down into the water, terrified of the thought of some ancient creature popping out to greet me with its claws and sharp teeth. What made it worse was the fact that my father would make up terrifying tales of giant sea monsters and drowned people who had come back to life, looking to devour any sailor they came across. It's safe to say that he found it highly entertaining to scare the hell out of me. But that also meant he had to sit by my bed any time I had nightmares, which I imagine he found less fun.

We arrived today around noon after what felt like a three hour car ride. After we had unpacked, I decided to go for my usual walk in the woods. It had always been a tradition for me to walk this route on the first day - a way of making sure nothing had changed. I’ve always liked to think of it as a place lost in time.

As I ventured into the woods, I quickly realized that everything looked and felt the same as it always had. This gave me comfort immediately. It had been a cloudy day, but as I kept walking the sun began shining through the oak trees above me. About half an hour went by and I reached a big rock that marked the halfway point. I sat down and closed my eyes, thinking back to the previous year where my uncle and I had been sitting in the same spot. He had been visiting for a few days, mainly to go sailing with my father and try to convince him to renovate the house, in order to get rid of β€˜the damn smell’. He later told me my fathe

I made a terrible discovery in our attic and I no longer trust my family. [Part 2]

Part 1

I barely slept last night. The horrific events I had experienced had left me in a complete haze. All I could do was replay the scenes from the attic in my head: the jewelry box that had appeared out of nowhere, the strange engravings on top of it, the severed hands rotting away on the floor - the panic as I realized they belonged to a child. These images were now a part of me, a burden to carry with me for the rest of my life. I thought of how relaxed I had felt earlier that day, knowing that my parents and I were going to spend the next few days here, alone and far away from any other people. Now the thought terrified me.

---

β€˜Honey. Look outside the window.’

I was woken by a whisper. The voice sounded soft and gentle. I looked around the room and saw my mother sitting at the foot of my bed, wearing her morning robe and holding a freshly-brewed cup of coffee in her hand. Her eyes were slightly swollen as if she had recently woken up. She was looking at something off to the side. I checked the clock on my nightstand: 7:30 AM. I had barely gotten two hours of sleep. My mother glanced at me, smiling, then pointed excitedly towards the window next to me.

β€˜Look!’

It took a moment for me to register what she was saying. Her presence had startled me - how could she sit so casually in my room given everything that had happened yesterday? She kept pointing to whatever it was that had caught her attention. I gave in and looked out the window.

The backyard was bathed in morning sunlight and seemed completely empty and quiet apart from a couple of birds chirping away in one of the trees. It looked like any other morning. For a second I thought my mother had imagined something, but then it happened: a creature emerged from one of the bushes. I felt my body tense up. All my father’s horror stories of lake monsters roaming our backyard came back to me. The creature stepped out on the grass, looking a lot smaller than it had first appeared, and I let out a big sigh as I realized I was looking at a baby deer. It couldn’t have been more than a couple of months old.

The baby deer started walking around the backyard, carefully inspecting everything on its way: the garden chair that I had been sitting in yesterday, the sports section of the newspaper that my father had left on the table, a pair of shorts that I didn’t recognize. I heard my mother chuckli

Fantasy series that follows the same family through the generations, including the discovery of gunpowder

This series is quite old, I think. I read them maybe 10 years ago, but I think they were published at least in the 90s. From what I can remember the covers had typical fantasy art, one of them may have had a carriage and horses against a night’s sky.

The story in the series follows a particular family, going from a male member’s childhood to his adulthood. One of the books followed a guy who was brought up in a matriarchal society somewhere in the mountains, and I think his name started with C. Most of the protagonists in the story fight with a quarter staff or magic.

The first book I read, not sure if it’s the first in the series or not, follows a guy who has weapon training and chooses a quarterstaff.

AITA for making potentially β€œembarrassing” family genealogy discoveries visible on Ancestry.com?

I’ve been the extended family’s amateur genealogist for more than 20 years. I’ve built an enormous family tree on Ancestry.com. Names and details on all living people are hidden (unless I give special permission to someone). Info on deceased people is visible.

Like a lot of American families, there’s a persistent myth that we have some Native American heritage. My late paternal grandmother told us that she was descended from a French soldier who married a Native American woman.

Well, Grandma (who was a very sweet lady) made this up. She was orphaned at age 2 and didn’t even remember her biological parents. Maybe she just wanted an origin story? I figured out who her biological parents were earlier this year by triangulating my DNA matches and searching other people’s public family trees. My great-grandparents were Eastern European immigrants. From newfound relations, I was able to learn a bit of family history. No Native Americans are in it.

Iβ€˜d actually forgotten about the Native American stories. My dad is no longer alive, but I shared this info with his brother, my uncle. He thanked me but asked, β€œAre you 100% SURE there’s no Indians [his word, not mine] in our tree?” Yep, 100% sure, I told him. He responded, β€œWell, Ronny [fake name] isn’t gonna like hearing that.” Ronny is my cousin – I haven’t seen him since we were kids -- and he apparently took the Native American thing to heart. He went out and got a bunch of tattoos with symbols from some local tribe! I checked out his Facebook and sure enough. He AND his kids even go to local pow-wows and are tribal dancers! I had NO idea.

To look at Ronny, I guess you could believe he had somewhat exotic ethnicity if he claimed it. Dark hair and eyes, warm skin tone, high cheekbones, large nose. On the other hand, he looks pretty damn Slavic, too.

I had and have NO intention of telling anybody in Ronny’s world that this is untrue. But he did not take the news well. His dad shared my number and I got a text from Ronny telling me to take down any info about our family origin immediately. I responded no, and reassured him that his name wasn’t displayed and his secret was safe with me. I’m not trying to β€œout” anybody as anything. I don’t share findings on Facebook and you’d really have to dig through the Ancestry.com tree and know what to look for to find these nuggets on your own.

He texted back β€œYou’re a fucking bitch.” I blocked him. (In hindsight, I wish I’d have responded, β€œAnd you’re a white dude

Discovery of β€˜Dragon Man’ Skull in China May Add Species to Human Family Tree

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 89%. (I'm a bot)

> The researchers named the new species Homo longi and gave it the nickname "Dragon Man," for the Dragon River region of northeast China where the skull was discovered.

> His cheeks were flat and his mouth broad. The lower jaw is missing, but the researchers infer from the Dragon Man's upper jaw and other fossil human skulls that he likely lacked a chin.

> Dragon Man existed at a time when a number of drastically different kinds of hominins coexisted, including Homo erectus - a tall human with a brain two-thirds the size of our own - as well as tiny hominins including Homo naledi in South Africa, Homo floresiensis in Indonesia and Homo luzonensis in the Philippines.

> To figure out how Homo longi fits into the human family tree, the scientists compared its anatomy with 54 hominin fossils.

> Still others even called the fossil a new species, Homo daliensis.

> The new study, based instead on fossil anatomy, indicates instead that Homo longi and Homo sapiens are more closely related to each other than to Neanderthals.

My discovery regarding "The House of Gucci": Maurizio Gucci, played by Adam Driver in the film, sold the rights to the Gucci family's ancestral coat-of-arms

As some of you may or may not know, I am a fan of Adam Driver and his work - but also of the medieval era, which also includes heraldry, or "the system by which coats of arms and other armorial bearings are devised, described, and regulated".

Today, I will be addressing this piece of heraldry, which is claimed by the Gucci family.

According to Wikipedia:

>Heraldry is a broad term, encompassing the design, display and study of armorial bearings (known as armory), as well as related disciplines, such as vexillology, together with the study of ceremony, rank and pedigree.
>
>Armory, the best-known branch of heraldry, concerns the design and transmission of the heraldic achievement. The achievement, or armorial bearings usually includes a coat of arms on a shield, helmet and crest, together with any accompanying devices, such as supporters, badges, heraldic banners and mottoes.

Heraldry is also governed by "the law of heraldic arms", which is a general guideline for the "right to bear arms". Typically, the "law of heraldic arms" allows for a single coat-of-arms to be issued to an individual - usually, a man, though women may also rarely receive one.

By the "law of heraldic arms", that man's firstborn son thus inherits the rights to bear the coat-of-arms; the firstborn son's firstborn son; and so on, and so forth. If the firstborn male-line descendant has no sons, his firstborn daughter inherits the right to bear the coat-of-arms.

Italy, like many European nations, also has such heraldic tradition. Due to this, as explored in The House of Gucci book, Guccio Gucci and his son - Aldo Gucci - sought to tie the Gucci family - and, in turn, the family business -

If nothing like that exists, it’s our loss. A community of people dying to chit chat about family skeletons with people who are actually interested in that kind of gossip would be a great resource during lonely times.

Discovery Family's version of Walking With Dinosaurs.

Sometime in 2018, I saw a seemingly lost version of Walking With Dinosaurs on Discovery Family. I believe the channel aired the original series, but that's not what I'm looking for. I would've posted this on r/tipofmytongue, except I can hardly find any traces of it anywhere!

Here's what I remember:

  • I'm NOT confusing it with Prehistoric Planet. Which is a similar "kid friendly" version of Walking With Dinosaurs. Funnily enough, that show's second season is lost.
  • The show was simply titled Walking With Dinosaurs.
  • Instead of Kenneth Branagh, it was narrated by a young woman, whom I don't know the name of.
  • A few "extras" were thrown in. The show would periodically cut to present day. What I specifically remember from the episode was a group of paleotologists excavating a dinosaur skeleton (I think it was Triceratops). It even interviewed a few of them.
  • Strangely, (along with footage from the original series) there was stock footage from When Dinosaurs Roamed America thrown in. It was American, so of course it wasn't made by the BBC. However, it was made by Discovery Inc, the parent company of Discovery Family.
  • Not very noticeable, but it seemed to be toned down for a more "family friendly" audience.

I've searched, but I can't find any footage or anything really. However, this page (Dated 2/11/2015) is the only potential evidence I have of this series existing. It states that the Walking With Dinosaurs will make it's network premiere on Discovery Family, as if it's the original version. However, it lists a few of the episodes, none of which seem match up with the title or description of the original episodes. Besides that, I can't find anything else. Most unfortunately, I can't find any footage.

If any one has any further information, please comment below.
