A list of puns related to "Crown Colony of Labuan"
*Actually about 1,400 miles driving as well as 110 more on ferry and bus
9 years ago in between jobs, I took advantage of a week off and drove all across Northern Malaysia over the course of a week. This December, 9 years later, I once again found myself quitting my job and having a couple weeks before I started a new one. So, I flew to East Malaysia and rented a car.
This is the path I took. I landed in Labuan just as the floods were beginning in West Malaysia, spent the weekend there, then took the ferry & bus to KK. Spent two days there before renting a Mitsubishi Outlander that took me much of the rest of the way.
How COVID affected the trip: Obviously with COVID I try to be cognizant about social distancing as possible; not dining in as much and staying away from crowded areas. Being alone helped, but contact is inevitable. The further east I went, the less masks appeared. I saw more masks hanging on chins than over faces, regardless of where I went. People just walk around with the mask like a chinstrap, or worse, pull it down to talk. In some places, touts and beggars come straight to your face, unmasked, asking for money or business. It was a bit of a shock after 2 years of loneliness. Another point is that because of COVID, some sites require you to make an appointment to visit as they limit visitors to 25 or less, but you won't know this until you get to the site. However I was able to visit Bukit Tengkorak (by going on a super quiet day) and the Oath Stone (I made the booking as I passed by 2 days prior, but I guess they thought I'm a researcher).
Highlights: Staying in a longhouse. Sunset on the tip of Borneo. Seeing orangutans, sun bears, and proboscis monkeys in one day. Swimming with a school of barracudas in Semporna, actually all of the island hopping trips. Sinalau Bakas (thanks to whomever suggested this). Coffee while waiting out the shower in Tenom. Driving the Tawau-Keningau road.
Things I learned on the trip: The aforementioned oath stone where Sabah joined Malaysia. The Sandakan Death Marches; I visited the cemetery and the war memorial on both ends. The different types of noodles like Mee Tuaran and Mee Tauhu. Detours like the Menara Kayangan that gave some cool vi

In real life, Sri Lanka would gain self-rule as a Dominion in 1948 and adopt a new constitution separating it from the British crown entirely a few decades later in 1972. Since it is 1949 in game and the British haven't come around to fucking off just yet, throwing off the British yoke will be top priority, something I intend to accomplish within an year or two, followed by a series of domestic reforms and policies that will see the island nation come into its own a lot soon than its real-world counterpart did. This will include a pledge of eternal armed neutrality, the development of an intricately defined federal parliamentary system, development of a fruitful working relationship between the Sinhala and Tamil communities for the greater good of the nation, and generally just ensuring that Sri Lanka grows and prospers as a truly sovereign and free state.
With Turkestan liberated and reunified with its Chinese Comrades I move on to another claim. Across the world in a land without steppes or revolution, a land of peace and serenity...
The Crown Colony of Jamaica
The Crown Colony of Jamaica was in a precarious situation. The current Governor of the Colony, Sir John Huggins GCMG MC, was presented with a crossroads that would decide the future of the island and perhaps, British possessions within the Caribbean and the New World. Separate from Canada and mainland Anglo dominance, the Islands and alcoves present within the Caribbean represented a new challenge for British administrators. Unlike the Anglo dominance over the French in Canada, native British citizens were outnumbered by colonial citizens, workers, and immigrants from other parts of the Empire. The question that remains, is that will these possessions end up like other European colonies or will they band together with their distinct cultural heritages to form a body that is able to influence the water it occupies. The future of the Caribbean lies with both Whitehall and Kingston.
If you have Leviathan (or any other DLC that grants the advanced colonies mechanic), changing the type of the colony will fix the colour.
I'm currently doing a Netherlands run, but all my colonies were still Holland brown, the minor I started as. I was pissed off that the colour wouldn't change, since the whole point of this fuckin game is to paint the map, right?
I googled around, and saw a lot of old posts about how you could use the console to force integrate the colony and then have it reform to change, but I always play ironman, so that won't do. Another suggestion was to release and then conquer the colony, which seemed like a great way to waste 20 years and cause a bunch of devastation. No.
And so I was resigned to the fact the colonies would be the wrong colour. I ran about another 50 years, and Brazil (who i had as whatever the fast growing colony is called) was getting pissy about some kind of request for liberty or something, I don't know I can't imagine why they would want that. And so I changed them to a Private Enterprise for the LD reduction, and low and behold the colour updated!
This is my first run w/ Leviathan enabled, though IIRC there was a previously DLC that granted those options? I don't know, I certainly never owned it. But there you go. If your colony still has the colour of a previous tag of yours (because they keep the colour of the tag they were formed under), you can get around it using the change type command. Cool cool cool.
My blood pressure has been lowered seeing North America in Orange. Verdomme ja!
Not sure if this is common knowledge, but wanted to share.
Nubbie here to claim the Crown Colony of Southern Rhodesia. The goals here are simple. I'm looking for a slow burn, so slow road to independence through peaceful means. Through Rhodesia's vast natural resources, my goal will be to bring about a very high quality of life making it the jewel of Southern Africa. I'd like to bring about the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland as was historic. I'd do everything in my power to keep it united and thus creating a strong unified state in Southern Africa. I'd like to use real world Tanzania as a guide for successful de colonization.
Currently running a colonization game and things are going on pretty well. Now that they're getting somewhat big though, how should I be running them?
Obviously, at first I guessed I should be running the colonies as Self-Governed because then they get an extra colonist to expand more rapidly, so I did just that. Now that some of them are running out of empty land to move into though, I should obviously switch them to either Crown Colony or Private Enterprise to get rid of the liberty desire penalty, but which option is better?
Pretty new to this game so I'm not sure which of them would be more profitable/helpful to me. I'm sure each option has their own benefits, when should you use each of them?
I've learned some about Cresap's war and a lot of the insanity of their (both Thomas and Michael, father's and son's) lives.
I'm specifically wondering if earlier local disputes like this one might have tempered the English response to what eventually became the American Revolution a few decades later. Or were these types of things considered to be localized enough that they weren't really considered much at all by the monarchy?
