A list of puns related to "Comparison of Japanese and Korean"
This comes from a footnote in the latest edition of Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities, but his source is "scholars of Japan," not any named individuals or papers. Is this credible info? Has anyone any plans to continue the research in the future?
We recently had a survey on Reddit on how we rate the girls and there's this poll on a Japanese website asking about your favorite girls (vote or click the second button to see the 2019 results), and I decided to compare the data.
First of all, in the survey, we had to rate the girls on a scale from 1 to 10 and at the end, they were ranked by average rating, while on the Japanese site you are supposed to pick up to 3 of your favorite girls. Due to these different methods, it's not very scientifically valid to compare these two batches of data, because the poll doesn't reflect cases where someone has more than 3 favorite girls, nor can we tell if the 3 chosen girls would all get a rating of 10. (Also the site isn't Bandori-specific, like this subreddit).
In short, the Japanese results may or may not be vastly different if they took the same survey we did. Similarly, the reddit results would also differ a little if we ranked them by the number of 10 ratings, rather than average rating.

For the most part, both fanbases agree on the best girl from each band (Misaki, Aya, Lisa and Moca), with the exception of PoPiPa, where JP switched Saaya for reddit's 3rd favorite, Arisa.
Another big difference is the popularity of Roselia, pretty much everyone is a lot less popular in JP, with the exception of Yukina, who rather than the least, is their second favorite Roselia member. Although, keep in mind, on average Roselia is still the second favorite band, but the difference between them, Afterglow and HaroHapi is quite negligible.
Meanwhile, PasuPare went from second-to-least to the most favorite band in JP, thanks to Chisato and Eve ranking a lot higher. And in fact, none of them ranked worse than they did in the reddit survey.
The following are just personal interpretations, but comparing the data, reddit seems to have a preference for team moms, shy girls and drummers, while JP is more favorable to girls who aren't quite honest with their feelings.
The Roselia situation is really surprising to me. All Roselia seiyuu are really active, so with Japanese people being able to understand and enjoy all their appearances on radio shows, Bandori TV, etc. without having to rely on transl

What are the most plausible explanations? Some have pointed to the large amount of fermented foods or the large intake of salt among others. Is there any consensus as to what is the strongest cause for these high rates?
I've been watching East Asian movies for many years now. When it comes to drama/detective/thriller type of movies, it seems like majority of the time Asian movies end up being more interesting and unique than Hollywood ones. It made me curious why is that the case, which led me to the depths of the internet, where I've found a comment of the random person mentioning that East Asian countries don't get a proper aid for movie production, hence, have to work with lower budgets or bring in their (directors) money. The person said that East Asian countries gave more attention to the actual plot and picked a right (realistic) genres that do not require special effects/big budgets to look good.
My question is - is it true (or at least you think it is) that particular Asian countries are good at making certain types of movies (thrillers, detectives, dramas) because they gave more attention to the plot which, instead of special effects, hence, became more refined in plot writing?
3 words... Group Voice Acting. When it comes to anime productions, the Japanese voice actors of whichever scene they're recording all come together and record in 1 room, meaning all the VAs are in the same room when the dialogue is being recorded. This means when characters are having a conversation, the voice actors are also having that conversation in the same room. Here's an example with Akame Ga Kill and One Piece, notice how they keep rotating when the characters come up and how they're literally conversing the scenes as they happen.
https://youtu.be/Ga4naRUik8c?t=81 (1:21 is a very good example of that)
https://youtu.be/VMt2io3NPrk?t=36 (0:38, this is a one piece recording, notice the difference between this and the one i linked for the one piece dub below)
However, when it comes to english voice acting, and dubs in general, there are dozens of behind the scenes videos which show that the actor/actress comes alone in a booth, records his/her lines solo, then leaves.

One Piece, Fairy Tail and Steins Gate 0 dub behind the scenes
I think one of the biggest disadvantages of the way English Dubs are recorded is that the actors can't work off each other, if you notice in the first 2 links the actors pick up on each others tone and try to match it so the scene flows well and the interactions feel natural. I feel this is something that's missing in the vast majority of English Dubs. Whether or not you agree with that last statement, I feel the flow and natural feeling of anime dialgoue (emphasis on dialgoue, the way they talk, not necessarily the script) is superior to most other forms of media.
Edit: Yes, voice acting discussions aren't scarce in this sub, but this is why I never mentioned the quality of either sub or dub. The point of this post was to share some thoughts I had regarding the ****WAY**** voice acting is handled and recorded in each country. If you think Japanese dub is better, great, if you think English dub is better, then also great, just don't shame or attack each other for a preference in audio. At the end of the day, we all love anime, and that's why we are in this sub and love discussing it and talking

Luck was on my side as I discovered this sub before my trip so I managed to pick up quite a bit of items recommended along with stuff that had intrigued me from both respective countries. I'm currently working my way with the products (with all the testing times and etc). I've been a lurker on this sub for the longest time and it has helped my skincare tremendously so I hope to do the same by curating my thoughts on these products (along with the price if I remember), hoping that it'll be helpful to some of you :)
I have (very) dehydrated combination skin and my skincare routine is focused on hydration, diminishing redness and SFs and PIH fading.
A'pieu natural sun cream - Cheap, not sticky, doesn't smell like alcohol and doesn't leave a white cast. What's not to love? 8,500won
A'pieu creamy concealer duo (green) - Creamy indeed. Not as pigmented as the saem's. 6,000 or 6,500won
Aritaum Fermented Grain Cleansing Cream - I regret this purchase. Firstly, we have to wipe off the cream with a tissue instead of just rinsing it off. Secondly, it stung my eyes. Thirdly, it doesn't even get my make up off properly. Tossed it to the bin. Possibly 12,000 won
Aritaum Real Ampoule Highlighter - Love this! A youtuber I followed said this is a dupe for MAC Strobing cream. Not sure if it is but I'm happy with it. It gives the glow from within look which I thoroughly approve! 9,000won
Aritaum Real Ampoule Colour Corrector (Purple) - It seriously brightens the skin. Not recommended to sue under BB cushions/ CC creams. Tried it and I look way too white that one day. 7,000won?
Clio micro fine perfect fix mist - I honestly don't see a difference with or without this. 12,000won
Cure Peeling Gel - I ditched physical exfoliants ever since discovering acids. I still use this once in awhile though because this was not cheap lol. Feels nice on my skin and I like how my skin feels after using this. roughly 3,000 yen
CNP Invisible Peeling Booster - Reduced my break outs in general but doesn't do much for the SFs around my nose and cheeks :( I can't remember the price, sorry!
Cosrx AHA/BHA Toner- Got this to complement my actives. Tbh, I'm not sure how well this works. I tried omitting this and my actives worked just fine so I won't be repurchasing this. Can't remember the price, sorry!
Cosrx AHA - I was really careful with this because the other AHA I got burnt my

During height of Japanese invasion of Korea (Imjin War)A Japanese officer(who served under KatΕ Kiyomasa) defected immediately because of what he has witnessed, the crimes the Japanese perpetrated against the Koreans. (Ex. Mound of Ears http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimizuka) And so wished not to kill the innocent people of Korea. In addition, he had a fascination with the lifestyle and culture of Korea. Soon later, he joined in the Righteous Korean army; with his leadership and experience in warfare, he drove away the Japanese forces, and taught Korean soldiers how to use the arquebus (gunpowered matchlock muskets) and military tactics. (During this period, Koreans were unfamiliar with the arquebus and were poorly trained, preferring the bow and arrow, also lacking in battlefield experience and discipline. In contrast, the Japanese were armed with the arquebus in addition the Koreans faced an army with extensive combat experience, men already bloodied from the many campaigns of Japan's Warring States period.) The Joseon government recognized his efforts and was given the Korean name κΉμΆ©μ (Chungson Kim) and the rank of general.
After the Imjin War ended, Kim continued to serve in the military. He participated in the Second Manchu invasion of Korea in 1627 and was posted in the frontier until he retired. Was credited with the death of some 500 Qing troops at the battle of Ssangnyeong. Kim had devoted his body and soul to protect his new home. He also married a Korean woman. He and his men lived in a small village called Urokri μ°λ‘리(ειΉΏι) 1 hour drive away from Daegu city. Many of the Japanese defectors displayed great courage and loyalty. Gen. Gang Hong-rip (1560-1627) mobilized the Japanese defectors when he commanded an army to help Ming forces against the Later Jin in 1618. There is a legend that all Japanese defectors who served under Gangβs command refused to surrender to the Manchus and died with honor.
During the Japanese colonial era in the 20th century, Japanese officials and scholars tried to deny Kimβs existence. Some scholars visited the village and personally investigated the records handed down in his family. However, they did not recognize him as Japanese. Rather, they considered him βhalf Korean and half Japaneseβ or just a fictional figure. In 1930, Hidetaka Nakamura of the Japanese colonial governmentβs Korean History Compilation Committee conducted an investigation and confirmed that Kim Chu

I've learned so much from this community, so I thought it would be important to give back in the form of reviews. This is every single step in my current routine. I've used all these products for the past six months at least, or intermittently over the past two years. Mistakes and missteps are identified, but aside from those, everything has worked really well.
My skin is/was somewhat oily yet dehydrated. My skin used to be perfect, basically (yes, I know...pls ABCJ me!), but about six years ago possibly hormone-related changes resulted in prominent CCs that I didn't know how to handle. I also had a lot of sun damage from believing that tans were good, and not using sunscreen. I turned to harsh BP (and stained a bunch of towels), but after a while even that stopped working.
Cue /r/skincareaddiction and then /r/AsianBeauty (and the lovely swappers on ABE). After having some semblance of a consistent routine for the last year and a half, modifying and tweaking and researching (and spending a shit ton of money on some mistakes), my skin is bouncy, lighter and brighter than ever, and dewy in a good way. I have only occasional CC's and as far as I can tell it's because sometimes I'm lazy and will skip my routine/touch my face.
My routine has A LOT of products, but I am not a fan of AIOs and find that having many different essences and serums helps me target all the individual problems with my skin. It also helps hydrate at every step. Eta: I know not all of these are Asian/Korean. I don't think everything has to be Korean to be an AB routine. Western products that work well for me are included because I think it's important not to fetishize AB, and to get products close to home as that is more sustainable in terms of shipping.
Eye makeup remover: Garnier SkinActives Micellar Cleansing Water (blue cap). Does what it says on the tin. Doesn't sting. Good stuff. Will repurchase.
Oil cleanser: Kose Softymo Deep. Also does what it says on the tin. Have purchased backups. I replaced TFS Rice Water Bright with this because the TFS stung my eyes.
Second cleanser: CeraVe Foaming Cleanser. Good low-pH cleanser. I used this as a body wash too. Will repurchase.
Vitamin C serum (daytime only, alternate with BHA): NuFountain C20+ Ferulic. Great results, brightening, doesn't break me out. Short shipping times because it's from the US, so I don't worry about oxidation from long shipping from Korea. Will repurchase.

So i see in pop culture and online sometimes that people in jail or prison join race based groups. Does everyone do that? Do asians do that? Do they then divide up into specific subgroups? Is it different for males and females in prison?
In my opinion, only blacks, Hispanics and middle Easterners are people of color.
For example, I think it might've been in Mr. Sunshine, someone was talking about boats and infantry arriving at a specific location. They used proper names for those two subjects so I was able to pick them out audibly. In the English subtitles, they appeared at the end of the sentence. I'll try to give an example of what I mean.
In an English sentence it would be like: Be on the lookout around twelve o'clock because that's when we are expecting the Commander and the Free Army.
When I listened to it in Korean, I heard Commander and Free Army before the sentence was over. If the first half of the sentence was said in English, we wouldn't know what to be on the lookout for. If the first half of the sentence was said in Korean, would they know only about the Commander and the Free Army but not know when to look for them?
This has been bugging me for a while and I finally decided I'd ask here. No stupid questions after all. Thank you!
The movie IIRC came out in early-mid 00s. The scene I remember the most is when the American soldier wakes up and finds himself surrounded by the villagers. One of the villagers holding a dictionary asks the American "how are you" and the American says something along the lines of "where the fuck am I". The villager then says to his friends "he was supposed to say I'm fine thank you".
