Does anyone know to what extent, if any, classes at CDI are on a P/NP basis?
The Clive Davis joke is the best, but how long has it been going on?
Well first let me say when American Idol began as a television show, skeptics felt that no way could a long-term artist could emerge from a television talent contest. But have we proved them wrong! The very first album of the very first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, sold over 3million copies and her second album shows that she is here to stay in a big way.
Her current album, Break Away, has sold over 10million units worldwide. Even in countries that have never shown American Idol before. The album has gone as high as Seven Times Platinum and what’s more, Kelly has won two Grammys along the way.
And you know, that’s just the beginning; Ruben Studdard had a Number One R&B hit with Sorry 2004 powering his album to over 2million units, Clay Aiken Number One hit Invisible ignited his debut album to over 3million units, and all the hits on Fantasia’s album made it soar over to 2million units and importantly it earned her 4 Grammy Nominations which shows that her peers recognized Fantasia as the Number One new female R&B star of the past year.
And finally, this past year with Bo Bice he is well on his way to platinum with his album as his first single The Real Thing makes its way up the charts and the 2005 American Idol Winner, Carrie Underwood, has had a giant Number One Country record with Jesus Take the Wheel which has powered her album to over 3million units.
So, let me stress my deep gratitude to American Idol, to Simon Fuller, to Nigel Lythgoe, to Ken Warwick, and to each of the judges and the viewers at home for their role in discovering some of the major new artists of the last few years, and helping to revitalize Pop Music in a major way.
And lastly, I want to accept this award on behalf of my colleagues at RCA, J and Arista Records, and at BMG all of whom have worked tirelessly to achieve this. Thank You.
