Insights into role circular RNA in viral and non-viral infections

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are back-spliced circular RNA species with 1 to 5 exons and/or the introns. The regulatory potential of circRNAs is evident in different types of cancers and Parkinson’s disease. CircRNAs are abundantly found in eukaryotes. Their precise roles include, but not limited to, RNA binding protein sponge, microRNA sponge, template for translation or degradation, and regulation of mRNA splicing. Different studies report circRNA association with several viral and non-viral diseases, including atherosclerotic vascular diseases, cardiovascular diseases, colorectal cancer, diabetes mellitus, encephalomyocarditis virus (ECMV), Hantavirus, human papilloma virus (HPV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), influenza viruses, Kaposi sarcoma, myotonic dystrophy, neurological disorders and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Currently, they are used as biomarkers in different diseases owing to their evolutionary conserved nature(1)
