When someone asks me about my favorite film duo, I will always say that it is the duo of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze. I am aware that they only collaborated on two films, which are great from my point of view.
Charlie Kaufman is easily one of the greatest screenwriters of all time, he is also very original. The themes that he deals with, related to existentialism, identity, guilt, alienation and psychology have not been treated by any screenwriter in the way that Kaufman has. Although Spike Jonze is not a Spike Lee, nor a P.T.A., nor a David Fincher, he is a guy who knows how to give personality to each film he makes, obviously he has had much more experience in music videos but he has not failed in the cinema either.
I feel like Spike Jonze is the best director Charlie Kaufman could have had. I agree that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a better movie. Can anyone imagine what it would have been like if it was directed by Spike Jonze? If we did a versus between the two directed by Jonze and the two directed by Gondry we would know that the two of Jonze would win, who are far superior to Human Nature. Although I praise Kaufman as a screenwriter, I feel that his role as his director falters a lot and that is where he fails, he needs someone who knows how to land his ideas and think them in shots. The thing is, I feel like Jonze was able to explore the psychological, social and philosophical side more in the first two films, while Gondry explored the stages of love and romance more in Eternal Sunshine.
Something curious is that Kaufman wrote scripts for two directors who came from directing music videos and made them debut in the cinema, curious, don't you think?
Finally, Being John Malkovich and Adaptation are unique cinematographic gems and never, in the history of cinema, have films like this been made. Hopefully in the future we can see Jonze and Kaufman working together again.

Dzisiaj pierwszy raz spotkałam kogoś sławnego. Zdarzyło się to przy skrzyżowaniu na Zamienieckiej, trochę przed 16:00. Szłam na przystanek autobusowy, kiedy kątem oka zobaczyłam, że ktoś do mnie macha. Patrzę, a tu pomiędzy samochodami Charlie Chaplin jak żywy. Zdrowie już nie te, bo troszkę kuleje, ale pogoda ducha jak sprzed lat. Laska, melon, ukłon — wszystko jak na filmach sprzed lat. Niestety śpieszyłam się na autobus, więc nie zdążyłam wziąć autografu. Miałam nadzieję, że uda mi się to wracając. Czy ktoś jeszcze miał przyjemność spotkać gwiazdę niemego kina w Warszawie?
>!Gdyby ktoś nie ogarnął - starszy Pan przebrany za Chaplina zbierał pieniążki występując na wyspepce między samochodami. Wkładał w to wiele pasji i talentu, nawet pomalował twarz i ręce na biało. Wiem, że zdania są podzielone, jeśli chodzi o żebrzące osoby (ja uważam, że ubóstwo czy bezdomność to plama na honorze ludzkości). Proszę weźcie pod uwage, że ten Pan nie prosił o pieniądze za nic, ale starał się wnieść coś pozytywnego w życie innych. Sama dzięki niemu na chwilę zostałam wyrwana z szarej rzeczywistości. Jest mi cholernie smutno, że przez pośpiech nie wsparłam go groszem i dobrym słowem. Wyobrażam sobie, jak musi być trudno starszej, nie do końca sprawnej osobie prosić o litość obcych ludzi. Mam nadzieję, że jeszcze uda mi się go spotkać... ale może ktoś wie coś więcej?
