A list of puns related to "British Sign Language"
Sure, there are apps for BSL but they often just have you watch a video and copy, I want that demonic bird to furiously sign at me that Iβm a failure! I know there may be changes needed for existing activities like when you tap words to form a sentence, but you could have little emojis you click on that show you the full sign, then you string them together into the right order for the little demonβs approval.
Also, a BSL GCSE would be cool. Just a thought.
Working from home finally gave me the opportunity to pursue small things I was really passionate about. One of those things was that I really wanted to be able to communicate with my deaf friend via BSL (British Sign Language). Thanks to working from home since January, I have now completed Level 1 BSL and can have a meaningful conversation with my friend. I have only been able to do this because I don't have to sit (and travel 45 minutes) to an office under the watchful eye of an overbearing boss anymore pretending to look busy out of fear of losing my job or looking lazy. I'm still doing what's expected of me but now I can use the free time to actually do meaningful things in the comfort of my flat. "Time Theft" or whatever has bought me and my friend closer together and seeing the difference it has made to his life to have someone to talk to has made me very happy. All in all, everyone should work less and have the freedom to persue passions and skills that make a meaningful and positive impact to their own and others quality of life.
I used to live with a girl who studied BSL at university and I learned a few basic signs like finger spelling, how to say what i studied etc. but I want to take it to the next level and learn actual conversational stuff

I'm not 100% positive I translated it properly, so if anyone with BSL experience has any feedback, that'd be amazing
Hi guys. I had my first deaf customer today and feel bad that he had to go through the difficulty of writing down his order instead of having the same experience as everyone else. I'm in the UK and was wondering if anyone knows some British sign language for taking an order?
So I am someone who loves learning languages but also has hearing/processing issues and a hard time speaking at times. I also just have an interest in BSL itself as it's a very unique language. It would be nice to have someone to sign with as I learn, I don't mind helping with English or some simple French as I've been learning it for many years and have GSCE/Level 2 qualifications in it.
It's been fairly easy finding russian & french natives who want to learn or improve their English but I've not had a lot of luck finding BSL speakers to practise with. I know some basic signs, the alphabet and can say simple phrases. If there are any out there, let me know.

Would anyone be able to subtitle his favourite musical βCabaretβ (1993) live production with Alan Cumming on YouTube?

Iβd much rather talk to a deaf Brit, Aussie or Kiwi than any sort of Fr*nch person

The below is the list of resources you can use to learn British Sign Language and of course, including this subreddit! Some resources are free and some are paid - we're not affiliated with any of them however. If there are some issues with the list, including the quality of the resources, or you just want to add something to the list, please let us know :)
Most of this list is written by /u/JCMAWFA2009 please give your special thanks to them!
I've always wanted to learn British Sign Language but never found the time until now. I am a hearing person but I previously worked in customer service where the skill would have been useful.
Has anyone taught themselves BSL or signed up to an online course (free or paid for)? Do you have any tips or particular websites you would recommend for someone learning from scratch? Thanks!
ETA: Not asking for judgement on the personal medical decision MY family made for OUR daughter. She has not had an interest in an implant but if she does later on, the option is available. We wanted her to have the choice, but also to grow up in deaf culture. I am not going to defend this anymore to Internet randoms, but please consider researching deaf opinions on the matter. As a hearing person, I can only give a very limited perspective.
Hi all. I (30F) am hearing, married to a deaf man (32M) - Iβm going to call him Walter - and we have a deaf daughter (6F) - Iβll call her Cora. Walter comes from a primarily deaf family but my family is all hearing. We have chosen to raise Cora with sign language and not go for an implant - this is simply for context, I am NOT seeking judgement on this!
Before Walter and I got married, my parents began to take classes to learn ASL, as did my brother and his family. My sister, Emily, took them for a bit but ended up not continuing due to βlack of interest.β She and her husband have not taken any lessons, nor have their 3 children. Walter tried introducing their daughter to baby sign when she and Cora were both very young but my brother in law asked him to stop, as he didnβt want to βconfuse her.β Cora and her cousins play as best they can with the language barrier but itβs extremely frustrating for her to feel like she isnβt being understood. When my brotherβs children (who visit only a few times a year) visit, they interpret for her, or Walter and I have to constantly be looking over their shoulders to help resolve their miscommunications, which is too helicopter parent for me.
When we learned Cora was deaf, Emily pestered me about getting her an implant and continues to send me shame-y Facebook posts about the benefits of the implant and those videos of babies hearing for the first time. She constantly says itβs βbetter than having to learn two languages.β Sheβs been very pushy about it, to the point she and Walter got in a heated argument over it. Since then, she has not pestered him about it, only me.
My last straw was this past weekend. Emily was with all her kids, teaching them a game. I noticed that Cora wasnβt joining, so I brought her over and Emily outright told me that Cora couldnβt play, because itβs a game βfor people who can speak.β I was fuming and pulled her aside. I told her that my daughter can communicate, just not how Emily wants, and said that I wonβt have my daughter excluded for something so

When doing the 1st digit (across my body), my boob shifts my arm in a way that stops me signing with my hand upright and my 4s could be 9s. Never considered this when I decided to learn!
Anyone wanting to learn something new try BSL (British Sign Language). The official British Sign website is currently allowing you to do a introductory sign language course, for as little as Β£3 (donations) usually it is Β£25! I started today and within an hour I had my ABCs and 1-10 drilled in my head.

Hey, everyone, what's up?
So I was at the cafe, just there bored and chilling nothing much to do... And then I saw a girl who just got there, and I was like let me check on her profile to see what her profile says or just to see her avatar and then I saw her avatar was doing the word "Thank you" in American Sign Language, lol I was so impressed to see that lol wow. And I was like, yo wait a minute does Avakin have Sign language hand talk? Because I love ASL (American Sign Language) I was an American Sign Language interpreter, and the sign that girl did in her profile caught my attention, I didn't get the chance to ask if she's deaf or hard of hearing or hearing person she just left.
Well then I searched on shop and I just typed "Thank you" and I saw that word in Sign Language. Also I saw "nice to meet you" but that one didn't quite signed it the way we do it and there was also the "See you later" But I like both "nice to meet you" and "See you later", I wish I could show a video of teaching you how to say them..
Also you should do the "I Love You" or (ILY) hand sign and the "I Really Love You" (IRLY) you just need to use one hand to say them or I can show a video. or watch YouTube video for American Sign Language or BSL (British Sign Language ) But if you people already know American Sign Language (like me) or British Sign Language (I just know a little bit lol) then you know how to say "I love you" or "I Really Love You"
And hope you add more Sign Language hand or finger spelling animations, or poses etc lol.
I learned from minute one that she hates swearing, is highly strung about it with everyone, and I've always sworn like a docker. However, I'm oddly proud of my track record for having NEVER sworn in front of her in 8 years.
Then I arrive for tea the other night, she hasn't noticed I'm here yet, and says to nobody in particular: "The heating's off, for fuck's sake."
8 years. 8 cunting wanking twatting shitting tittyfucking years.
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone out there knows sign?
If you do how useful is it? How many times in your career have you used it?
If you could pick any language to just know what would it be?
When I was 18 I was in an accident that caused TBI, resulting in me losing most of my hearing in both ears, making me deaf. I didn't qualify for cochlear implants, so being deaf was just my new reality.
Obviously this derailed my life for a while. University got pushed back, and I was depressed for a long time. Eventually I got back out there, discovered the deaf community, learned ASL (american sign language), and at 26 I now feel very content with my life.
My parents were devastated by my accident, and our relationship has never been the same. A few years ago I told them I have embraced being deaf, and I asked them if they would learn ASL, as that is now how I prefer to communicate. They said no at the time because they didn't have time to learn a new language. I have tried many times over the years to try to give them information on deafness and ASL, but they have shown no interest.
We communicate now mainly by using voice-to-text on our phones, which is far from perfect, and very chaotic when multiple people are talking. Trying to keep up with conversations is exhausting, and people are constantly getting frustrated with me for not following along. Often we watch movies, but they refuse to turn the captions on because it's "annoying", despite the fact that it means I can't understand the movie at all.
This past Christmas, I once again struggled with conversations, which once again resulted in me being either ignored or yelled at. Before I went home again, I sat my parents down and told them that if they did not begin to learn ASL, I would not be visiting again for a long time. I told them I don't expect them to ever be fluent, but I need them to show effort in learning. I told them that they have continuously dismissed my needs as a deaf person, and that if they want to continue to have a meaningful relationship with me, we need to have some kind of shared language.
This didn't go over well at all, as my parents accused me of wanting to cut them off, which isn't true. I just can't do any more visits where my presence feels like a burden. My brother and I have been texting since then, and he thinks I'm being hugely unfair.
So AITA?
EDIT I can't respond to everyone, but thank you everyone so much for your kind words and support. I have been spending the last few days wondering if I'm being unreasonable or dramatic, as even though my friends (most of whom are deaf) support me, I didn't know what the hearing would would think of this. I can n
