What is Momentum thickness and Displacement thickness in Boundary Layers?

I've already checked in wiki but I couldn't understand. Explanation with the underlying action going on and not with the equations or formal definitions would be appreciated!!

Boundary layer thickness, displacement and momentum thickness question

I have been learning about the boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness and momentum thickness. The question I have is when performing a calculation of conservation of mass (rho * V * A=constant) through a pipe, I know I need to subtract the boundary layer thickness from the radius of the exit area. But, do I need to subtract displacement and momentum thickness as well?

Thanks.

Boundary Layer Thickness (Fluent)

Hi all,

I am very new to CFD so this might seem like a stupid question to some but I can really use some help on this. I have a rotational heat sink with impeller like fins (round, imagine a fanwith the blades being impeller like fins) that I am using a Single Rotating Reference frame, the geometry is enclosed inside of a cylinder and the frame inside the cylinder is rotating. I am able to get it to converge, see the velocity vectors, the pressure contours and everything. (I posted about this on an earlier post, thanks everyone for the help)

My question is how would I go about trying to find a Boundary Layer thickness that is created around the heat sink? Should I use skin friction? I am using Fluent as the solver, thank you for your time.

I'm comparing different sizes of leight weight boards with a sin(x)+sin(y) shaped (egg carton like) core and 8mm outer layers. To my surprise, the flexural strength greatly goes down with the thickness of the core. Why is this?

I reasoned that the area moment of inertia I would increase, thus increasing the flexural strenght. I would really appreciate any explanation for this!

This is the product: https://pyrus-panels.com/en/lisocore-2/.

Here is the data sheet: (It's in german however, Flexural strenght = Biegefestigkeit)

Total Newbie - Can I glue layers of foam together to build thickness?

So as the title suggests, I'm completely new to this. I've been looking to start restoring some old furniture as a hobby, and came across my first project on the sidewalk near my house the other day. It's a lounge chair, sort of in MCM style. Seems like a reproduction piece fringe the 80s or 90s. I was wondering why it was being thrown away until I saw the giant hole (probably from a dog) in the seat.

Which brings me to my question; I want to reupholster the seat and the backrest, can I buy thinner cushioning foam, and glue layers together to build thickness? Or am I better off to just buy the (more expensive) thickness I need?

Creality CR-10s Pro V2 First Layer Thickness Issues

Hey,

I am having some issue with my prints on the first layer. The thickness varies from left to right where the left side is thinner and the right has the correct thickness. To the right the nozzle seems to be almost too far away from the bed as the print is very rough as well.

I leveled the bed like a hundred times now, adjusted all the rollers to be tight but nothing seems to help. Besides I thought the auto-leveling with BLTouch would prevent such issues.

What else is there to try?

CFD Airfoil Wing Boundary Layer Separation Issue

Hey guys, I'm working on designing a wing and am noticing I get a pretty bad boundary layer separation on the underside of the airfoil when the AOA gets higher. Overall I'm not really getting the downforce and drag numbers I hoped for either. Any thoughts from you design gurus on what I could change on the airfoil to get better flow on the underside? Here are some pictures: It's a 3D airfoil and when the center airfoil is at 0 Degree AOA, the outer profiles are at 10 Degrees.

0 Degree AOA : Downforce --> -90 lbf, Drag --> 20 lbf

10 Degree AOA: Downforce --> -160 lbf, Drag --> 11 lbf

The Drag numbers going down also don't really make sense in the context of the airfoil plane views. I imagine Drag would always go up with AOA.

Mesh with gaps on the surface

Thanks all per the usual. Let me know if you need more info to be able to provide feedback.

Which Merino Base Layer Thickness for sleeping

We went backpacking in the Sierra's last year which was 70 during the day and min-40's during the night. The Big Agnes Encampment 15 degree sleeping bags we have and NeoAir XLite really didn't keep us warm and our method of warm clothing was mostly layering regular clothes we had at home. To be warmer and save a bunch of weight we are getting legit 20 degree UGQ quilts and want to pair this with a good base layer. We hope this will also allow us to expand our backpacking availability to cooler months as well.

Our intent is to put on the base layers once it gets cool in the evening along with our jackets, sleep in them, then after the morning warms up take them off. However, all the info I can find always talks about activity level which doesn't really apply to sleeping since activity level is basically zero, but I'll have a warm quilt. The morning and evening activities will be minimal until it warms up a little to remove the base layer.

I know temperature is very subjective and I sleep on the warm side and my wife sleeps on the cold side, but I'm looking for some sort of feedback on what people use so we can make a more informed decision. We are definitely looking at mid-weight wool but I'm not sure if 150, 200, or 250 is most appropriate. We will definitely error on being warmer since it's easier to cool down, but I don't want to be ridiculously warm as well since that can also be uncomfortable.
