Sulphur Springs and the first railroad station outside of downtown STL

Did you know that the area around Hampton and Manchester once boasted a sulfur spring that was so beloved, it was the site of one of the first settlements outside of the city itself, and because of its popularity, was the site of the very first railroad station/terminus west of the Mississippi? In my latest bit of research, I dug into this history a bit more.

Best location for railroads and train stations?

So near where I live in New Jersey there is a rail line being planned that would connect Rowan University to Camden with stops along the way. One of the main arguments I’ve seen from residents of Pitman (a town the east referenced in the video Suburbs that don’t Suck - Streetcar Suburbs) is that the line would run directly through the center of town, with trains departing from the station every 15 minutes and crossover every 7.5 minutes. I feel as though this is a valid argument for the same reason it would be valid to not want a 40 mph stroad built right in the middle of a livable suburb. I also know that moving the station outside of walking distance would make it far less practical, as is explained in The Trains that Subsidize the Suburbs. Does anyone know of any more resources that explain the best place for both rail lines and their stops?
