Event: European Team Chess Championship 2021

The European Team Chess Championship 2021 will be held between 11 and 22 November at the Terme ČateΕΎ spa near BreΕΎice in eastern Slovenia, in what will be the biggest chess event in Slovenia since the country hosted the 35th Chess Olympiad in Bled in 2002. The ČateΕΎ spa, which is the largest such resort in Slovenia, will welcome more than 500 chess players as part of 70 teams from 38 countries. Current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway will miss out on the competition, same as his rival, Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi. However, all other top European chess players in the world will be present.

The event is organized by the Chess Federation of Slovenia under the auspices of the European Chess Union. The championship was supposed to be held last year, but was pushed back due to Covid-19. The organisers have said that the event’s participants, referees and other staff will be in a social bubble for the time of the competition to prevent any outbreaks. There will be no spectators, however the matches will be livestreamed. All those present at the matches in-person, including reporters, will have to comply with the COVID-19 pass mandate as well as get regularly tested.

β€œNext year, there will be the European Individual Chess Championship held in Terme Olimia. Two such major championships in such a short time also mean a great honour for Slovenia. After the Bled Olympiad, we’re putting Slovenia on the global chess map again, and we’re also looking forward to a big promotion of chess and the country at large,” says Darja KapΕ‘, vice president of the Chess Federation of Slovenia.

14-year old Indian chess prodigy Nihal Sarin just won the 2019 Asian Blitz Chess Championship!

Nihal Sarin, one of Kerala's budding chess talents who became a grandmaster last year, just won the Asian Blitz Championships in Xingtai, China, scoring 8/9 against a strong field in a terrific performance! He also finished 11th in the classical tournament, which was unfortunately just shy of what he needed to qualify for the World Cup.

He continues to climb the ratings ladder in blitz chess, jumping to a rating of 2685 without losing a single game in the whole tournament.

####Format/Time Controls

  • The match will be played over 14 standard games. The first player to reach 7Β½ points will be the World Champion of Chess.

  • At the opening ceremony, a drawing of colors determines who will start with the white pieces.

  • The time control is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 61.

  • If the scores are level after the regular 14 games, four tie-break games will be played. These are rapid games with 25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move.

  • If it's still equal, two blitz games will be played (5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment), followed by another pair of blitz games if needed. If there is still no winner after five such matches, one sudden-death game will be played. The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes whereupon, after the 60th move, both players shall receive an increment of 3 seconds starting from move 61. In case of a draw, the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.

  • The players cannot draw a game by agreement before Black's 40th move. A claim for a draw before Black's 40th move is permitted only through one of the arbiters in the cases of a threefold repetition.
