I really loved the 1st Conjuring movie so I was really looking forward to Annabelle (especially since I am terrified of Porcelain Dolls IRL) but was really disappointed when I saw it. I enjoyed Annabelle creation a little more but even then I was still not a fan of the Annabelle series. But then I watched Annabelle comes home and thought it was really good and it is probably my 2nd or 3rd favourite movie out of the whole Conjuring franchise! Does anyone else have the same experience? If not what's your favourite?

I actually really enjoyed it, it had a lot of really good and creative scares and ties really well into the first one. Only thing was I couldn't fucking stand how dumb the characters were, my mate and I were constantly shouting at the screen. Why does Janice keep going into that fucking room even after she clearly encounters paranormal activity. Why do both Janice and Linda never mention any of the shit that happens to them to anyone. Any normal person would run as fast as they can to someone and tell them exactly what happened to them. Even when Janice is about to tell sister Charlotte what she saw she explains it so vaguely that it can only be interpreted as not a big deal, not "I got fucking clawed by a literal demon that chased me". Other than that great horror movie.
Let me explain.
Most, if not all, horror/thriller films that revolve around supernatural hauntings and/or witches are such lazily written stories that rely on cheap jumpscares for basic shock factor value.
The problem with those films is that you can make LITERALLY anything happen and shrug it off as “Oh it was a witch that did it”. It fucking sucks. I love films like World War Z, It Follows, etc. Because they have interesting villains with rules around them (e.g. a virus only affects you after 12 seconds, it’ll keep following you at a walking pace until it kills you, etc.).
Not only does it add more interest in the world and it’s characters but also adds a sense that there actually is potential for the main character to beat the bad guy, even if the end result is that they don’t win it makes it THAT much more gut wrenching to know they actually stood a chance.
Movies that revolve around witches and ghosts or hauntings in general are just so dull because they’re so cookie cutter. The main character just runs around scared for a bit and then either dies to the ghost or witch (as they realistically would) or makes some kind of impossible connection that ends up saving them.
Baffles me that these movies are held in such high regard given their very linear and simplistic story lines.

This week saw another shining example of not only the power of horror films in the current box office landscape but also the interesting rise of the concept of the horror cinematic universe, as Annabelle: Creation became the fourth Conjuring film in a row to open over $30M, opening at #1 with $35M. All four Conjuring films have managed this rather high opening and they collectively have now grossed over $350M domestic against a total combined budget of $81.5M. The success overseas has been just as striking, as Annabelle: Creation opened to $36.7M in foreign markets this weekend which has pushed the total worldwide gross of the Conjuring franchise to a massive $966.9M. The film as to be expected carries a rather small budget ($15M) and was directed by redditor /u/dauid, or David F Sandberg as he's know to normies, who last year delivered another incredible ROI with Lights Out which made $148.8M on a budget of $4.9M. With this film Sandberg has become a new James Wan, delivering well reviewed horror films at a low budget and finding incredible returns, though like Wan now Sandberg is moving on to bigger things as he is directing the Shazam movie. Overall Conjuring has been an incredibly rewarding franchise, one that is one of the most profitable in the business currently. With the film The Nun, a movie about the demon nun from Conjuring 2, in the works and more planned spin-offs and sequels it seems clear that this odd but extremely popular franchise is one of the secret wonders of Hollywood, a cinematic universe that's actually working with 100% efficiency.

Yes there is a film called The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, and yes it does exist and yes this week it did open to an appalling #3 spot with $8.9M. Annabelle started as a character in the Conjuring films, and then was given her own series, that has surpassed Conjuring in number.
Are there any other examples of franchises where this has happened? I don't believe MCU counts because Thor isn't a spin-off of Iron Man, and the MCU is yet to really have a true "Spin-off" film (I suppose Falcon/Winter Solider would be the first?)

Except for the reliance of jump scares. Those really dampen the film. Change those scenes up to something more suspense full and clever.
I love the lore and detail of the characters we get. Plus the cinematography is incredible. The story is fun and a pinch of cliche.
Am I alone on this?
If Annabelle had been a person, it would've been intriguing and added an additional layer to show. The fact that it was just a weapon seemed disappointing. I was expecting more from this. They shouldn't have emphasized this in the storyline.
Just realised her filmography isn't that extensive; it's not clear she's busy with another job/family etc...I'm sure the audiences would like to see more of her.
I just find them very slow and boring, the jumps scares awful, I am never really scared enough or creeped out enough by the ghost like the nun, or whatever one was in the conjuring. Annabelle is really not that creepy and she has too many films. I think compared to other horrors, the conjuring films and the ones in the shared universe of the conjuring are extremely weak. Im making this post to see if anyone somewhat agrees or disagrees and why.
Edit: nothing to do with its popularity btw, as some mainstream horror is really damn gd, in fact im shocked conjuring is mainstream.
