Lebanon recently lost to Turkmenistan 3-2, a match that we should have WON. Had we won, we would have secured our spot in the next round. But in fact, we do still have a decent chance.
For those of you that are unaware, the way it works is that the winners of the each of the groups (except Qatar) and the top 5 second place teams will qualify to the third round. Therefore, 8 group winners - 1 for Qatar + 5 second place teams = 12 teams in the third round.
These are currently the standings for the second place teams. As you can see, Lebanon is in third with 4 teams behind them who theoretically could pass them (assuming Lebanon loses to South Korea on Sunday).
Now, here's the magic: For Lebanon to qualify, at least 2 out of the 4 teams below them in the standings have to lose their last game. This will likely happen because:
Uzbekistan play Saudi Arabia (first place)
UAE play Vietnam (first place)
Iran play Iraq (first place)
Jordan play Australia (first place)
ALSO, Lebanon cannot lose to South Korea by more than 4 goals.
In other words, if at least two of these first place teams win their matches, Lebanon will just nearly by a thin margin qualify to the third round.
Just wanted to shine some optimism. HOWEVER, the fact that Lebanon lost to Turkmenistan is still a failure imo even if we qualify to the third round. IMO major changes need to be made or else we will get spanked. But that's a discussion for another day.
