The Simurgh comes to Asteroid (101955) Bennu

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?! No, it's a ...rock?

TL;DR - There is now a boulder on an asteroid that NASA is visiting with a satellite.

The article - https://www.asteroidmission.org/?latest-news=first-official-names-given-to-features-on-asteroid-bennu

Hello, this is my first time posting on reddit at all, sorry for any naiveness, but I thought that this was something the Worm and Parahuman community would appreciate as a whole, and my friends pressured me into putting it here...

I have had the honor and pleasure to be working on the OSIRIS-REx NASA mission for almost a year now while we orbit and prepare to return a sample of Asteroid (101955) Bennu. One of the important tasks for the mission is to name prominent features on the planetary body but the caveat being that each mission almost always has a theme they have to stick to. Ours was birds, particularly mythological ones, hence the name of the asteroid, Bennu, after the Egyptian Bird Deity of Creation since we are looking to sample Bennu to give us insight to how the solar system and planetary bodies formed in the early solar system. A few months into working on the mission I also had another milestone of finishing all of Worm and knew I wanted to honor such an amazing story and community. We have had unofficial names for feature on the asteroid since the beginning of the mission but when the push came to formally naming them I helped push for one of my favourite and mission critical rocks on the surface to be named Simurgh. We have to provide reasoning and official sources of information to the IAU (International Astronomical Union) on why the feature deserves the name so the official reference was to the original Persian mythological bird of wisdom and teaching, which is fitting for a rock we use on the mission to define our Prime Meridian. From the rock all of our data products, maps, and science is based basically and it is a an area of the asteroid I work with frequently. It seemed a very fitting name and a great homage to the Endbringer at the same time.

Thank you for reading! I know it isn't the most relevant post to the Worm story and characters but I hope you enjoyed.

The Simurgh in all her glory!!

We totally should put our tendies together to go mine asteroids in space. That way we can have more tendies and end dependence on China for rare-earth minerals. Let's all learn how

SIR, THEY'RE PLANNING TO MINE ASTEROIDS WITH ALL OF YOUR MONEY

LAST TIME ON DRAGONBALL Z...

I wrote a fine-ass thread giving a rough price estimate and laying out the details as to how we apes can build a skyhook. That thread turned out to be one of the more popular ones here on Ape Philanthropy, and although there was some criticism in other subs saying the price estimate was a bit optimistic, everybody was pretty much sold on the idea of building skyhooks.

I still remain sold on the idea -- even if the things cost twice or three times as much as the original estimate, the benefits they offer are so expansive that I am writing this thread on asteroid mining on the basic assumption that we have built at least one to get crap to and from LEO, drastically reducing launch costs.

That being said, let's talk important shit. Let's talk:

ASTEROID MINING

If you've never heard of it, I highly recommend watching Kurzgesagt's video on the subject and also the SFIA with Isaac Arthur episode on it. It's really fascinating stuff.

We apes need to get ourselves in the industry and start mining the shit out of some space rocks not only because we'll need off-world materials to build colonies in orbit and around other planets, which I imagine if you're reading this thread you're already down for in the first place, but for a much more important, much more down-to-earth reason: politics. Basically, we need to go off-world to mine rare-earth minerals from asteroids because people down here on the Earth are dicks and controlling the industry for their own benefit. And we apes can, with our collectively put together pile of sweet and delicious MOASS tendies, and should, specifically to keep governments and other shitty corporations from getting their greedy little hands all over them and abusing other people through artificial resource scarcity.

The things are worth tens of trillions of dollars apiece. No, seriously.

With our sweet delicious tendies with sides of Szechuan sauce, we can ensure the human race will have a near limitless supply of rare-earth metals that will last bare minimum thousands of years. In today's episode of [

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Фото с сайтов hayabusa2.jaxa.jp и nasa.gov

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
