Windows 1252 Puns

My client wants his web pages in html using charset=windows-1252. However, I have been using UFT-8. For me to change the html page from UTF-8 to windows 1252, is it as simple as replacing the code? Are there other things I have to do? I have been using Dreamweaver for this. I hope this is a simple fix.

As a fun? project I'm trying to write a parser for an ancient game's config text files, but I'm getting tripped up because the files are encoded in Windows-1252. The game is so old and uses a such a bizarre markup style that I heavily rely on find()-ing characters and slicing up strings.

None of the characters highlighted in red here are showing up properly when I print. I'm OK with them not appearing correctly on my end, but I need to know that they're going to get encoded properly when I write a parsed file. I also need to find() some of the broken characters but can't.

What do I do?

EDIT: Solved! It turns out that I must have inadvertently resaved the file I've used for testing as UTF-8. The characters are now showing up.

I've been binging true crime for the last little bit and the majority of cases I see were from the early 90s or earlier. It makes sense though since it correlates with the drop in national crime rate in America especially compared to 30 years ago in 1991.

Violent crime in 1991 was 758/100k, today it is 379/100k (down 2x)

Property crime in 1991 was 5139/100k, today it is 2110/100k (down 2.4x)

Homicide in 1991 was 10/100k, today it is 4.8/100k (down 2.1x)

Robbery in 1991 was 273/100k, today it is 81/100k (down 3.4x)

Burglary in 1991 was 1252/100k, today it is 340/100k (down 3.7x) - no wonder Kevin McCallister was so prepared lol

Vehicle Theft in 1991 was 659/100k, today it is 215/100k (down 3.1x)

It's also estimated that there were over 200 active serial killers around in 1991 compared to now where there's less than 10

Now these numbers are still significantly higher than other modern developed nations but compared to previous decades, reducing crime in this nation has come a long way. What caused such progression, and how did these numbers plummet by such margins within a relatively short period of time (USA is nearly 250 years old so 30 years is a pretty small window)?

Were there new policies implemented to reduce crime? Less drug activity? The internet? Cell phones? Enhancements in crime deterring forensics like DNA & surveillance cameras? Less children born out of wedlock? Less active gangs? The US overall is also more educated and prosperous than we were 30 years ago so that could also be the reason, not to mention our standard of living is also much higher

Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.

I wrote a 3D renderer in pure Java. It doesn't use any graphics libraries; all the math is done internally. I started this in college when I took a class called Computer Graphics. I thought it was going to be all about the math involved and optimizing it, things like that. But it turned out that all we did was make games in Javascript. For our final project we were supposed to make another game but I asked if I could do a research project in Java instead. Since then I have added to and continued to improved it. It probably isn't useful for a game engine because it all runs on the CPU, but it is very insightful and fun to play with.

Its very easy to make your own Scenes and Drawings, basically just pick and position objects where you want them. There are also several demo Scenes/Drawings you can run right out of the box (Polyhedra Explosion is my favorite). There are objects built in that you can use like polygons, polyhedra, spheres, picture frames, and mirrors. You can add movement, rotation, and orbit animations and transformations. You can have multiple cameras, up to 3 and view and control them independently. You can take screenshots and create recordings of your Scenes as well.

Sharing this so other people can have fun and learn from it too, hopefully. As well as getting any feedback or ideas for it. Thanks!

Edit: There is a bat file in the main directory that you can use to run any of the drawings or scenes from the command line.

The syntax is: "graphy.bat <scene|drawing> <class>"

Example: "graphy.bat scene PolyhedraExplosion"

For work I have to do a simple task on a daily basis that just screams: "automate me!"

What I have to do:

I have between 1 and 6 CSV files with slightly different names that I open in Notepad++, convert to UTF-8 and then save.

So I have two questions about this process:

1. Can this be automated? (I'm pretty sure it can)
2. Can I do this with Python and is this a good exercise for a complete beginner?

If there is another programming language that is better suited for this I would still like to try it with Python for training purposes.

Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.

I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.

When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."

From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"

Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
