Westermarck Effect

Do you guys think aegosexuality could have something to do with the Westermarck Effect and that for some reason some of us never stopped developing it with the people we met?

What (if anything) helps prevent parents from becoming sexually attracted to their sons/daughters once they become adults? (The Westermarck effect doesn't apply to them)

What (if anything) helps prevent parents from becoming sexually attracted to their children once they become adults?

The Westermarck effect inhibits sexual attraction towards those who a person lived with during childhood. This helps prevent people from becoming sexually attracted to their siblings, parents, and others who they live with (or spend a lot of time with) since childhood. But parents are adults (or at least teens) when their children are born, so this doesn't apply.

There was an experiment where women smelled t-shirts worn by various men and rated how attractive their scent was. How attractive they found the man's scent went up with genetic difference between them, and went down with genetic similarity. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/library/01/6/l_016_08.html)

Scent aversion is the only thing I know of which would contribute to preventing sexual attraction of parents towards their adult sons and daughters.

Is there any other research that you're aware of which shows that there are (or may be) other things inhibiting this?

Also, does anybody know if this t-shirt experiment was repeated with men being the ones smelling shirts worn by women?

It seems that many people see the kibbutzim here in Israel as a model, even though they have failed, but nobody seems to appreciate the moshavim as a type of cooperative living, which has been a success (I am a moshavnik)

People in the United States and Europe talk a lot about the kibbutzim, but the fact is that the kibbutz here in Israel is a failed project. Almost all of them have privatized, which means that they are basically just like American gated communities with an orange grove or vineyard or pottery studio/kiln or quarry on the premises, which would operate at a loss if not for the fact that foreign young people come to do free labour in exchange for Hebrew lessons and the experience, and that the government pays them to house new immigrants and teach them Hebrew, and to house soldiers who don’t have families because they are lone immigrants or orphans. For me, it’s no surprise that they’ve failed because they were an oppressive system, if you joined a kibbutz or were born on one you lost all of your individuality, if your kibbutz had an orange grove your destiny in life was to be an orange grower, you ate what they served in the cafeteria, your entertainment was whatever the community decided so if you wanted to listen to a jazz record but the others wanted a Mendelssohn cello sonata that’s what you listened to, in the early days the children were raised separately from their parents collectively but they stopped that firstly because parents can’t bear to be kept away from their kids and so many took them and left and even among the parents who stayed many of the kids would leave when they grew up because of what’s called the β€œWestermarck effect” where non-related people who grew up together are repulsed by getting together because it feels like incest, so they would go elsewhere (to the cities) to meet people and start families. In theory each family or single adult would get a stipend of cash but using it to buy things that expressed your individuality like records or later CDs, decorations for your house, clothing or cosmetics was seen as frivolous and discouraged, you were pressured to spend that money on the community for things like fuel for the generator or animal feed (many kibbutzim were on mule and donkey power into the 1990s, and those that were mechanized were often using ancient vehicles left by the British that were converted into tractors and harvesters), my grandmother told me a story of Shoah survivor who came to live on her kibbutz and was pressured to sell a piece of jewelry that belonged to her murdered parents that she had hid away from the Germans to purchase a community sewing machine. I have this information because my grandmother on my fa

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

The most controversial elven manhood ritual

Real-life Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism, have arguably all had old customs within the faith that come off as barbaric or even perverse, by modern standards. Some of the elven religions have gone through similar transitions, once containing rituals that were phased out due to their cruelty or vulgarity. The Vanir-veneration manhood ritual, being the most sensational example.

Previously almost universally practiced amongst worshipers of the Vanir, the ritual takes the form of young men having sex with their own mother. The practice is inspired by the real-life claim that an African chieftain had sex with his own mother, as a sacrifice made to ensure victory in combat. The story is told by a white slave trader, so it might just be a racist lie invented in order to dehumanize africans (Canot, Theodore (2009 {1854}) "Captain Canot, Twenty Years of an African Slaver" Cosimo, p.334). The manhood ceremony is also inspired by the practice of the real-world Sambia tribe, a community where boys as young as six year old start drinking sperm as a way of transition into adulthood. Not to mention the Hyena-Men from parts of Malawi, adults paid by some parents to have sex with their daughters after a girl has had her first period.

Due to the peculiar nature of elven reproduction, where women don't give birth to live children but seeds that have to be fed to a special tree for children to grow on, unwanted pregnancies are virtually impossible. So the risk of an unwanted child through incest is negligible. Still, with their shared evolutionary history with humans, elves are instinctively turned off by incest.

A very small group of fundamentalist Vanir-venerators still practice Gullveig's Grand Gift, as the ritual is called. While most have moved on to the reformist custom of what

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
