There's a certain vibe that all of these songs have that's different from the rest of the tracks by those artists.

On a longer drive yesterday, a Femmes song came on which led me to load up their Spotify page and I was surprised how many songs I knew or had heard before. How big were they back in the day? And do you think that they were more influential on bands that came after them then they get credit for? For example there are moments in Add It Up (day after day, I get angry, and I will say) that sounds like a precursor to Kurt Cobain to me. At other times I feel like the singer is doing a Lou Reed impression and then wonder if they were not an influencing band, but one that was taking elements of others before them and used nostalgia to their advantage.
So what was the deal with the Violent Femmes? Were they a big deal for a short period of time? Were they a smaller regional band that I just happened to be in the right place to have heard a lot of their music? Do you have any particular favorite songs of theirs? Do you think they have any musical legacy? Have they been mostly lost to music history? To me, they're a band that I forget existed until I hear them and think "oh shit, I like this song, this band was really good, what happened to them?"
So let's talk about the Violent Femmes for a minute.
