A list of puns related to "Ultraman"
Sadly i don't have any puns myself, now i'm feeling TAROble
Hi everyone!
As the title says, Iβm Mat Groom, I write comicsβ most relevant for here, I co-write Marvelβs ULTRAMAN comics. Drop your questions here and Iβll do my best to answer them!
Iβll be starting in about an hour (6pm Pacific, 3Pm Eastern), and sticking around for an hour from them.
Looking forward to it!
I don't know if you would agree with this, but it seems to be that the Ultraman fanbase can be divided into 2 major group of fans, at least with regards to the online fandom. On one hand you have the old guard, the fans who grew up with Ultraman since forever, and the fans who experienced the TDG as the modern height of the franchise. This group largely belong to people from East and Southeast Asia, because Ultraman was popular and many of the series did air on tv.
On the other hand you have new-gen fans, who primarily came to the franchise when Ultraman became much easier to follow on the Internet. This fanbase is primarily made up of more Western fans, who were "late-comers" to the franchise. They most likely didn't watch TDG in their childhood, and came to the franchise as older teenagers or as adults.
Generally, it feel as if there is a difference in taste between the older fans and the newer fans. Older fans might prefer a return to more serious and darker tone, while newgen fans are happy with a far lighter tone to the franchise.
Does anyone else feel the same?
I haven't watched Ultraman since kindergarten (Max specifically). I binged Gaia and then I thought: "Is it the host or the Ultraman that's in control?"
As much as I love the M-78 lore and stories, I always felt it has become far too detailed and mundane of a backstory. It's nice to know stuff about Ultraman and their origins, but I felt that we've have far too much information about Ultraman at times. We learnt about Ultraman having children and successors, training schools and etc. But somehow it made the Ultraman civilisation of M-78 feel a little too "normal"?
On the other hand, we know very little about the ancient giants of light. We know they are somehow connected to human civilisation, there was an ancient civil war, and some of the giants were giants of darkness. We know that humans can become light if the right conditions were met. We know that the ancient giants had a policy of not directly interfering with humanity's choice. I felt that is a far more interesting origin and backstory for Ultraman, because it made them feel like a real mystical force that humanity are finding it hard to understand. On one hand it tells a story about the possibility for humanity to advance, but at the same time it tells a story of human darkness, and the possibility that humanity can fall as they once did.
Does anyone else feel the same?
I was wondering if there is order to watch the series and where to watch it? Which one should I start with?
Ultraman evolved as a series out of Ultra-Q, which was essentially a mystery-science tv show more than anything else. Which is probably why in most of the showa and early Heisei era series, it doesn't feel like a standard superhero show. Yes, there's a Superhero element to the show, but the vast majority of the Ultramen episodes were about the attack team figuring out weird science/fantasy elements that is plaguing humanity.
With the New Gen, it seems like the Ultra-franchise have shifted more towards the superhero aspect rather than the sci-fi/mystery aspect of storytelling. The stories became more serialised, but that means the focus becomes more about Ultraman/host and their backstory instead of focusing on the humans investigating weird stuff around Japan/Earth.
In Ultraman Z, while the attack team have returned, STORAGE is really more of a defence force than a Science Patrol team. They don't really spend a lot of time investigating weird elements, and instead focus more of their time responding to monsters that had already appeared in public. Aside from one episode where STORAGE had to investigate aliens replacing humans, there's not that much investigation going on.
Does anyone else hope to see the Ultra-franchise returning to a more sci-fi/ mystery science style of storytelling?
Hello everyone,
I'm sure this is a message that gets asked all the time, and so I apologize if this comes as repetitive.
Anyways, over the past few months, I have become a big fan of Kamen Rider, and have discovered more about the world of tokusatsu, further enjoying series such as Super Sentai. Ultraman never initially appealed to me, but I've started to take a look and it seems pretty interesting/good. I'm not a huge fan of most of the suits, but some look cool and I'd like to give a season a try one day. Where would you recommend I start? I will say that I'd rather watch a newer one, around where Tiga is and onwards.
This is just simply for fun. For example Genta/Shinken Gold became a recurring villain in Kamen Rider Saber named Master Logos. .

I absolutely love what Anno did with Godzilla. I grew up on the '98 Tristar version as well as the 2000s TOHO films, and have caught up on everything else over the years, but Shin Godzilla is my favorite by far.
When I first watched the original Godzilla from the 60's [EDIT:1954] I remember how apparent the vibe was. The atmosphere of the film is very thick, you feel the tension and the weight of the terror from the monster's rampage. It was a kind of horror that really preceded anything I was used to, from Alien to SAW or anything else. And it was something that I hadnt experienced yet in a Godzilla movie, where the Millennium goji TOHO stuff, and even more so the Tristar version, are very upfront about being action movies.
Shin Godzilla has this feel of the original, but with modern sensibilities. Liberties are taken but nothing seems over the top or bastardized, any changes or additions, to me, were done in a tasteful manner. I saw some people complaining about the CGI but, I thought the art was amazing from the monster to the set. The human portion of the film I also found engaging, which I feel a lot of kaiju/monster/horror movies fail at doing. Maybe this was partially because I cant understand Japanese and have to read the dialogue (afaik there is no dub), or that most of the dialogue revolves around Godzilla's presentation in this universe. In any case, I felt like I was rooting for the team instead of just waiting for them to die for more VFX.
Now at the time it came out, I knew that Anno was also working on the Evangelion series of films and put down the franchise waiting on the next US release (being Godzilla: King of the Monsters). But after watching SG again just recently, I found out Anno is finishing up a Shin adaptation of Ultraman (which should be out anytime now), and has also confirmed to next be working on Shin Kamen Rider after that.
Unlike Godzilla, I know nothing about these franchises. I vaguely knew Ultraman's existence but never heard of Kamen Rider until now. It appears that in the West (or at least in my online circle) Im not alone in that, since I hadnt seen the same fanfare around these as Godzilla's adaptation. Regardless, Im super excited to see these. I wonder what other Japanese classics that Anno might be able to adapt if these films do well.
