A list of puns related to "Toponymic Surname"
The name appears in the 13th century, but itself is taken from a tower (thought to be erected that same century) that previously belonged to the Templars. However there is no explanation for the name choice, or the provenance of Vasconcelos.

/r/etymology provided a tentative answer here that I'm inclined to believe. But you guys have provided a better historical background for it so thanks a lot as well!
The English-speaking world is full of surnames which are derived from professions (Barber, Taylor, Butler, Cook), adjectives (Black, White, Brown, Short) or toponyms (Scott, England, Ireland, French).
As I understand it, these names are supposed to have begun as a way of describing individual people (e.g. John, the barber) before becoming immutable patrilineal surnames over time.
Are there any cultures in which this process has been observed to happen over the past century or so? Have we been able to understand why it is that a descriptive word for an individual turns into a name applied to his family?
Also, I apologise if this isn't the right subreddit to post this in, but considering it straddles anthropology, history and even linguistics to some extent, I was not sure where else I could have posted it.
I dont know that much about mine, I just know that it comes from the latin "Fons Sicca", that mean "dry fountain", dont know how it became a surname. How about yours guys?

Four weeks ago I published the Wargame Theory, a cultural DD that used narrative as a way to explain some of the unexplainable parts of the GME saga. That theory explained events up to 4/17, and made some fairly accurate predictions about where we were heading. This one skips ahead to the present day. If the Wargame Theory was about plot, the sequel is a character study of the antagonist.
I called that one my Charlie Day-DD because it was my Theory of Everything. This is my Vizzini-DD, where I try to reason through a problem using only the psychological traits and life experiences of my opponent as premises.
Before we get into the new timeline, I want to highlight the most important prediction of the Wargame Theory:
>"I think the Good Shills have been winning the war for the Apes. I also think we have one last boss to fight. Itβs not Citadel shorts. Itβs the MOAFUD."
Big Bad confirmed: The Mother of All Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt
By last month, I was convinced that the shorts were trapped in a black hole of their own making, that they could neither stop shorting nor extract themselves through any market mechanics, even illegal ones. People I trust were fond of using that analogy, and the technical DD suggested it even though it was incomplete.
The Wargame Theory was based primarily on u/c-digsβ analysis of the regulatory environment (Iβm also posting his ongoing DD because I find it excellent and bullish).

... keep reading on reddit β‘Since some individuals like to speculate on relations with Russia, I've decided to make a post and tell in details the history of Russian-Armenian relations.
This short post is going to be divided into several historic periods:
In part 1 I will look at first and second periods.
Let's get started
Middle Ages/Moscovia.
The very first time the presence of Armenians is mentionned in the 9th century in Kievian Rus' in historical chronicles. The Kievo-Pecher Patericon tells a story of debate on medical treatement between Agapetus of the Kiev Caves (Orthodox Christian saint and doctor, as well as a monk in Kiev Pechersk Lavra) and Armenian doctor. According to chronicles, Armenian doctors' diagnosis turns out to be wrong and his patients miraclously recover from all their diseases after they receive treatement from Agapetus. When Armenian gets ill and has three days to live, same Agapetus treats him and cures him. According to Patericon this impressed Armenian doctor so much that he became monk in Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
But that's chronciles.
it is believed, that Armenians had influenced architecture of some buildings and monuments in Vladimir Suzdal as they have traits that make them looks close to Armenian ornaments. Some suggest that happened because Armenian masters took part in their construction. No less important, is the fact that Gregory the Illuminator had special respect in Novgorod, where he was depicted on icons.
Armenians and their settlements are also mentioned to be in areas surrounding Volga river during Golden Horde's reign somewhere around late 13th century. Armenian presence can be seen in toponyms of the that area as one of mountains on the right bank of Volga near city Samara has name of mount Kabackaya/Armenyanskaya (Armenian).
The flow of Armenians to Russia intensifies when Ottomans, Persians and Turkic nomadic tribes finally destroy Armenian state and capture Western and Eastern Armenia. Many refugees found shelter in Moscow when they had founded Armenian settlements. Most of Armenians were skilled doctors, goldsmiths or craftsmen. Armenians in Russia during Ivan IV (also known as Ivan the Terrible) rule enjoyed exclusive priviledges for they as they contributed to

To begin with, there was no region of Kosovo as such in medieval times, only a number of individual localities bearing that name. βKosovoβ is a very old and common Slavic toponym, originating from the word *kosΡ, meaning βblackbirdβ; and as you may well imagine, the β[place] of blackbirdsβ was only a too common name for a number of plains, meadows, moors and heaths, scattered all across the Balkans. In Croatia alone, I can think of several dozen localities variously named Kosova, Kosovac, KosovaΔa, Kosovica, KosoviΔ, etc. In fact, the earliest record of that name comes from the late 12th century legend about the death of Croatian king Demetrius Zvonimir. Supposedly, it was in a place called βfive churches in Kosovoβ, where he announced to Croats theyβre about to go on a crusade, and then got stabbed to death by a disagreeing assembly.
The particular Kosovo field which came to be the most famous of all the various Kosovos, and in modern age gave its name to this entire region, is a long karst plain on Sitnica river, practically in the very heart of the Balkans. Its fame stems from the fact that in 14th and 15th centuries, it was the site of not one, but two medieval battles between Christians and Turks.
I said Christians, because in both cases, the army opposing Ottoman advance was composed out of various Christian lords and their retinues, and not just of Serbs. The first battle, fought on 15th of June 1389, saw the Ottoman army of sultan Murad I pitted against the coalition of two most powerful Serbian nobles, prince Lazar HrebeljanoviΔ and his son-in law, Vuk BrankoviΔ, together with Bosnian duke Vlatko VukoviΔ KosaΔa, Croatian viceroy Ivan Palisna, and possibly some Hungarian and Albanian lords as well.
However, as itβs usually the case with events at the heart of myths, what actually happened in this battle is fairly obscure. The only thing certain is that both Murad and Lazar, as leaders of their respective forces, perished in it, and both armies eventually retreated from the field. Contemporary Christian sources tried to spin this as a victory for their side, and went into a full propaganda mode to glorify fallen Lazar and his warriors as martyrs, who gave their lives to defeat the Turkish menace.
Fortunate, most fortunate are those hands of the twelve loyal lords who, having opened their way with the sword and having penetrated the enemy lines and the circle of chained camels, heroically reached the tent of Murad himself. Fortunate above all is

Iβm cis female and I plan to stay that way. I had a ridiculous amount of trauma as a child/teen as a result of my family of origin. I never really liked my name and now whenever Iβm called by my name (especially my full name), I cringe.
I was born in 1990 and I have one of the top 3 names for my first name and a very common filler for my middle. My last name is like a plural-first name. Which I also hate because I donβt care to be associated with my fathers family.
Anyway, Iβm not interested in keeping any part of my given name. Iβm ready to start going by an entirely new name.
I seem to like noun-names. I also like very old names. I love names from most mythology too. I want my new name to feel confident and be memorable in a good way. I tend to like names with more hard constants rather than βairyβ sounding names. Iβm not a fan of male names for women and I donβt like many 90s names.
Idk if this helps with ideas but if it does: Iβm very artistic and creative. Iβm spontaneous. Iβve been described as bubbly and welcoming. I pretty outdoorsy. I garden and love nature. Iβm spiritual in the yogic sense. A bit new-age. Iβm a writer, photographer and yoga teacher.
Names I like but idk if I would use: Deirdre, Feodora, Raven, Rhiannon, Delphine, Maeve, Zelda, Roxanne, Indra, Fern, Alicia.
None of these feel quite right for me.
Hit me with your best, most creative ideas! Iβm open to everything. Donβt be afraid to go too out there.
Edited to add: I just want to be clear that Iβm looking for a full name, not just a first name.
Iβve randomly considered: Ivy Laine Fitzgerald
I like the play on words and it sounds elegant but Iβm just not sold. Forgot to add it to the names bit.
Do your worst!
