Help with the mechanism of hypervalent iodine phenolic coupling
Hi guys,
I need some help understanding the hypervalent iodine phenolic coupling reaction taking place in this synthesis of morphine, the reaction uses PhI(OAc)2 as the hypervalent reagent and trifluoroethanol as a solvent.

What is the mechanism taking place here? From my understanding the hypervalent compound contains a 3c-4e bond in which the iodide bears the positive charge and therefore is what the lone pair on the −OH attacks, what takes place after this?

This reaction results in the dearomatisation of one of the phenol rings, isn't a dearomatised ring a thermodynamically more unstable product, what is driving this reaction?

The paper describes the trifluoroethanol solvent as crucial, what makes the use of this solvent crucial? Is it the lack of nucleophilicity preventing a reaction with the iodine reagent?

I like the burning feeling of rubbing alcohol/iodine on my scar
It's a bit hard to explain. Similar sensations are experienced with tea tree oil on acne, or emollients on mosquito bites. People often complain of the searing pain they experience whenever they have to clean their scar with rubbing alcohol, but I actually find that sensation relieving. It feels very...curative? Like I am physically feeling myself being healed, and the process of the scar being disinfected/cured is made tangible. The slight numbness that follows the episode of sudden pain makes it even better.
