Two years into prpducing, and I finally got myself a desk, studio monitors, and a studio sub. HOLY MOLY!

When I first started I didn't have the money to get myself a proper setup. Honestly, I didn't really even have the money to get myself a proper laptop, but I put it on credit because I just wanted to produce so bad. I paid off the laptop mid-2021, and started saving for a proper setup. After months of being good with my money and getting a little help from Christmas I finally have what I feel is a complete work space!

I had felt so limited using only headphones: things like panning and making proper bass lines were so difficult without being able to hear what stuff was going to sound like on speakers. I got an idea over time, but nothing beats being able to hear it while I'm making it. It's been a week, and I've noticed a huge improvement! My baselines are much clearer, and my overall stereo image is so much better! I feel like I don't have any more excuses to be mediocre, and I love it!

I've wanted all of this for over 10 years now, and I couldn't be more satisfied with where I'm at. When I'm out at work all I can think about is how excited I am to get back home to produce- it's a feeling I haven't really had since I got my first Nintendo 64 in 2nd grade.

I've told my friends/family how happy I am right now, but I wanted to share this with people who I knew would truly understand- that's why I'm posting here.

...Also I'd love to see your setups and hear a little bit about how everything came together for you.

Much love!

(Yeah I know I still need to treat the room. I have some foam I haven't gotten around to putting up.)

NDI Tools: Studio Monitor

We've been running Dicaffeine on a RaspberryPi 4 to feed a lobby TV for some time now. It's inexpensive and runs great at 720p, but the Pi is a bit underpowered to handle 1080p30. There are definite frame drops which show as a stop motion effect.

We have NDI Tools: Studio Monitor running on a Windows 10 Mini PC. That gives excellent results, but I could use some help in getting it configured to run unattended. I have it set to run on Windows start (and it does), but I'm not convinced it will show the desired NDI feed without manual configuration on each startup.

Is there a way to get this to work unattended? Note - I am aware of other dedicated NDI receivers, but they are significantly more expensive. Birddog have been promising an affordable NDI player since last summer, but there's no sign of it yet.

Studio monitors vs floorstanders.

Hello, just wanted to hear people’s thoughts on this subject and I’ll use my case as an example.

I have been comparing 2 of my systems, i have the Focal Sopra 3 connected to Anthem STR pre/STR amp, the other is Naim uniti Atom connected to my Focal Twins Studio monitors. I keep going to the Twins over the Sopras for music, the Sopras are amazing, its just i feel i could hear more details in my music through the Twins without needing to go super loud. Is it because my room (7X5 meters) (and well treated) is too small for the Sopras? Or is it because usually floorstanders are designed to have a more fun and laid back sound ?

Been seriously thinking of selling the Sopras and get the Focal Trio 11 instead

What's the best monitor subwoofer for a small room home-studio?

I have KRK Rokit 8's but all of the bass goes over to the corner of the room so, when I'm mixing, I have to keep running back and forth across the room between mouse clicks to try and hear the changes being made to the low end. This is slowing down the workflow.

Should I just save up and get the matching KRK subwoofer or is there something cheaper that will be just as good?

Thanks.

Studio monitors?

Hey so, I've been producing on headphones for a bit and now I want to get some speakers. Are studio monitors the way to go? I pretty much always see them recommended for producers, but I'm unsure about the low end. No studio monitor setup I've seen has a sub, so what does that mean for EDM production, where low end is so important? Are studio monitors just sufficient? Does price matter for this? When working with an audio interface, is it even possible to add a sub? (all the ones I've seen just have L and R channels).

So yea my question basically comes down to: what speaker setup should I strive for with EDM production?

I have been using studio monitors for almost a year without acoustic treatment -.-

There's probably a few holes like my room makes 50HZ sound large and 51HZ it is lost in my room for example.

I have kali lp6s and had a few beat sales for the last year but not that much because I didn't work that much or I spent cash on weed... Learned a lot of shit but still need to work more. Monitors are Kali lp6 and been thinking of getting something that would allow me to hear good at least from 30HZ be it headphones or larger speakers for later...

Without acoustic treatment the whole purpose of monitors is kind of lost, or at least a big percentage of it because your room is making your monitors sound almost like regular speakers. I mean you can get used to them but still there's going to be shitload of trial and error because basically some frequencies can get lost for like 30dB x-hZ in your room...

Small reference studio monitors for mixing mid/high and high frequencies.

Hi guys, I'm looking for studio monitor with a cone smaller than 4 inches. I've been mixing pop music using on my Focal Shape 65 (mains) and Yamaha HS5 (reference) studio monitors for a while now. Last week I decided to sell my Yamaha's because they don't sound "small enough" to me. I'll try to explain what I mean with ''small''.

Sometimes, when I'm walking through a store, or when at people at home, I hear pop music playing through small speakers. What always surprises me on moments like these, is that I hear different information through these small speaker compared to my Focal Shapes or headphones, especially in the mid/high and high frequencies. The smaller speakers draw my attention to the mid-high/high frequency spectrum and therefore showing me the song in a different way. The key word here is ''attention''.
My Focal Shapes on the other hand, are sounding great and fairly neutral, but have the exact opposite effect on me and draw my attention to the low and mid/low frequencies. Although I can force shift my attention to different frequency ranges, it is focused on the lower range naturally. This can be quite tiring when I try to get an idea of how my mix sounds in general.
Smaller studio monitors sound refreshing and inspire me. For example: I'm sure you guys played your own mixes on a laptop speaker at least once in your life and noticed how some instruments/sounds jump out off your mix (in a good or bad way). Next, you go back to your professional studio monitors for the sake of a sanity check and just to find out that those elements indeed jump out of your mix. Initially, you didn't hear it on your mains, but now you do. This example happens to me regularly. My mains and headphones sound great, but the most simple laptop and media speakers can show me another side of my mix. As an alternative solution I tried putting an EQ on the master and cutting the lower frequencies, but that didn't hit the spot either.

Another reason for my interest in small studio monitors is that some of them make me feel like I'm actually listening to music, instead of a mix. This is mostly important when I'm producing, but also when I want to take the mix to another direction. When listening these small monitors it feels like I can let go of mixing for a while and actually listen to what the instruments are doing. I'm a sucker for over-analysing low frequencies in general, my thoughts go like: *hmm, is the kick punchy enough? The bass sou

Why not use Studio Monitors for ALL speaker situations?

I'm brand new to making my own music with multiple instruments blending together. As part of that, I purchased studio monitors. If those who do audio and make music mix using studio monitors, then why aren't studio monitors the "best" thing to use to "listen" to music?

Why should I buy a pair of $2000 audiophile speakers if studio monitors were used during mixing and creation? Wouldn't they ALWAYS give the most "accurate" representation of what was originally created?

Surface Laptop Studio not displaying Extra Monitors with Surface Dock 2

I just got a new Surface Laptop Studio today, and i purchased a new Surface Dock 2 as i read that the Surface Dock that i had before (for my SP4) was not enough. I also purchased 2 UCB-C-to-DisplayPort cables to with with my monitors that i have. There are all plugged into the back of the dock (not the front 2 ports) and there is no audio device plugged in either. I do have an ethernet cable plugged in though.

However, i am not able to get my setup to work properly. Everytime i plug in a monitor, i get a notification saying that i may not have enough USB power. When i plug in the monitor as well, my USB mouse (i have a USB mouse and keyboard in the back as well, in the USB-A ports) will stop working too.

I have installed all the updates in windows update and i ran the surface diagnostic tool. I tried plugging the USB-C cable directly into the laptop as well (with the dock both in and out of the surface) and it hasn't worked. I tried following instructions and installed a Firmware for the Dock2, though it did technically say Win10 in the name, im not sure if that matters since im on Win11 (there were no Win11 Firmware Updates in the list on the MS website). I also tried plugging / unplugging the power cable into the dock and at the power brick level, as well as changing what port in the surge protector it is in. I also unplugged everything in the power strip and that didn't fix it either.

I tried searching around but i couldn't seem to find any fixes to this (and very few questions about it actually) and wanted to see if anyone here has had this issue. If anyone has any ideas or tips, i appreciate it.

What monitors do I need? Home studio noob wants to play music with friends!

Hey guys!

I'm setting up a little jamming room to play some music with my friends. Last piece I need to buy is some speakers.

We'll generally be a small band playing, 1-2 guitars, 1 bass and an e-drum (Td-roland 1mk). Some vocals from time to time. All string instruments will have their own amps. So I need something that will mostly output the drum and vocals. Nothing toooooo loud. This is just a small room in my basement and I don't wan't to be blasting trough walls. Absolutly no intent of doing any live performance with that.

I've been told that a pair of 8'' studio monitors would suffice my need. The room is about 30 square meters.

Everything will also be hooked up to a mixer, so that I can record the sessions if I want.

So yeah... do 8'' studio monitors make sens? Will they have decent enough sound so that the drummer can hear himself? Any suggestions?

I'm looking at these right now, as my budget is around 500 CAD$. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/409990884251570/?ref=search&referral_code=marketplace_search&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A5fa5d772-3c7a-4e9e-8960-3c8d8011f3d7
