Pihole->Stubby->DOT->Quad9 DNS or Pihole->Ubound->Root NameServers?

My current Pihole setup with redundancy:

Raspberry 3b+: Pihole DNS #1

Raspberry 3b: Pihole DNS #2

Stubby is setup on both the Rpi's with DOT using Quad DNS 9.9.9.9 on PiHole #1 and 149.112.112.112 on Pihole #2.

Benefits of DOT with Quad9:

  1. Safety from MITM Attack
  2. Quad9 Blocks list of domains combined from 19 different threat intelligence partners

I know DOT doesn't provide any security or privacy as the ISP can still see the plaintext SNI.

Lately, I have been reading a lot of comments on reddit about Unbound DNS.

If I switch to Unbound with Root Name servers, then I will lose the two benefits that I am getting with DOT using Quad9.

Shall I switch to Unbound DNS or stick with DOT using Quad9?

Cheers

Akl

Adguard home and unbound

I did a full reinstall and decided to install adguard directly as a plugin alongside unbound.I have followed this tutorial: https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=22162.0

I have two issues:- I had to enable " Do not use the local DNS service as a nameserver for this system" inside of General Settings. If I don't OPNsense can't check for updates (timeout).- dhcp *.lan resolution isn't working (it does when I disable adguard home and change unbound port back to 53.

Does anyone have a working Adguard Home + Unbound install on OPNsense?

FlashRouter VPN OpenVPN issue with PIA?

Hi there - I am wondering desperately if you can help in anyway:

I have been LOSING IT for days. I run a flashrouter Linksys AC3000 dd wrt router. I had it flashed by FlashRouters. I was originally with Norton but switched to PIA - ever since then I am having trouble connected the router with a steady connection to the internet. It just hangs and hangs and hangs.

I have no idea what I am doing. FlashRouters do not seem to be of much help. Here is the one log that seems to show some issue.

Please any suggestion of what I should do. I am okay with computers but this is totally outside my realm. I would be so happy if anyone could point me in the right direction. I have long COVID 23 months now and am destroyed. My brain fog is pretty damn debilitating. From 14 year school teacher and public policy graduate about to start law school and not only that former marathon runner - on my best days I can actually have a bath (too hard to stand to shower) and walk my dog down the street and back :(

Hell I would even let anyone access my computer remotely. If you wanna check me out in the news, the link is at the bottom. :(

The log files given are as follows:

VPN for Self-hosting - Public IP

Is VPN a good solution for Self-hosting and to obtain a Static Public IP for Self Hosting?

I know some VPN's companies are selling both Shared IP and Dedicated IP Solutions.

Would a VPN with Shared IP be Static and enough for hosting websites at home?

(I'm already using no-ip and pointing cname's like www., but I would like to point domains without cname)

My ISP is charging 20€ / Monthly for a Dedicated IP, are there better, cheaper and more efficient solutions out there?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

External Access via Custom Domain Not Connecting

Hey everyone! With a lot of people's help I've gotten my server setup the way that I want now and I'm trying to get (and give) some external access to some of the services on there. I am having some trouble, though.

I'm trying to setup a custom domain for my server so that it's easy for select people to access it.

  • I forwarded ports 5000, 5001, 443, and 80 on my router. I confirmed these are forwarded from 'Can You See Me'

  • I purchased a custom domain and allowed Cloudflare to take over the DNS so I pointed my nameservers over to Cloudflare.

  • I created an A record to my public IP address. Pinging my custom domain shows my IP address. Currently none of my DNS records on Cloudflare are being proxied.

  • I installed Cloudflare as a custom DDNS using this: https://github.com/mrikirill/SynologyDDNSCloudflareMultidomain#how-to-install

  • I created a DDNS for my domain name using the instructions there.

  • I setup a Lets Encrypt certificate for the root domain under Control Panel > Security

  • I installed Nginx Proxy Manager in Docker (via this tutorial: https://mariushosting.com/how-to-install-nginx-proxy-manager-on-your-synology-nas/) so that I can use this at a later date to setup some subdomains for specific applications.

When I visit https://customdomain.com it does not resolve. When I visit http://customdomain.com it doesn't resolve. When I visit http://customdomain.com:5001 it gives me a '400 Bad Request'. When I visit https://customdomain.com:5001 it does not resolve.

I'm not sure if I'm missing anything else but I just don't seem to be able to connect to my server.

As a test, I setup a custom synology.me domain using Synology as the DDNS and it does let me connect/login to my server over SSL.

Any ideas on what I can do or if I did something wrong during the setup? I'm relatively stupid when it comes to this kind of stuff so I figure I missed something. I mostly followed tutorials so may not have everything I need in place.

I appreciate any insight that can be provided!

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Can Pop!_OS arm64.img be booted and installed in VM machines on M1? If so, how?

Hello everyone! Warm greetings!

So, I am currently using a macbook air with M1 chip. I am aware this device is not currently supported to receive pop installation on "bare metal".

Buuuut, being aware version 21.10 brought up arm64 image for Raspi 4, I thought well, let's give it a try then.

I have been able, so far, to boot and install both Debian and Ubuntu through qemu UTM hypervisor, both using their respective and latest arm64 versions. The thing is though, I really like pop_os.

I then downloaded the image for raspi 4 and tried to boot it, but no success. It seems the virtualised firmware used by UTM cannot recognise the boot file within the image.

I think it is due to some incompatibility of the .img file to be booted through UEFI [?]... I mean, considering the file has been designed to be used in a raspi 4 device, with raspi 4 firmware, that would make sense.

But I did some digging and tweaking around, here is what I did:

Firstly, when I saw that the raw .img wasn't booting, I concluded it had no installer in it, like GRUB boot loader. So I though, ah, alright then, let's install a bootloader in this bad boy.

Basically I convert the raw image into .vmdk and then tried to install GRUB boot loader in it.

# Inside my debian VM (running on top of my M1 chip):

sudo apt install qemu-utils

# Then, once installed, I downloaded the arm64.img file for pop_os and uncompressed it. In Debian's terminal again:

qemu-img convert -f raw pop-os_21.10_arm64_raspi_7.img pop-os_21.10_arm64_raspi_7.vmdk

# After that, I transferred the converted .vmdk file to my macOS... One would need the spice guest tools to do it in UTM, just in case:

sudo apt install spice-vdagent spice-webdavd

# Okay, now with the .vmdk file for pop_os in my macOS, I created the VM in UTM:

  1. made a removable drive in the VM, and set the path to the debian arm64.img (which I previously downloaded from debian.org)
  2. imported the .vmdk file for pop-os I just converted as a new drive in the VM I'm creating
  3. Created a regular empty nvme drive for the to-be installed system
  4. Starting the VM I was welcomed to the debian GRUB boot loader
  5. I arrowed down to Advanced Options, selecting it
  6. Arrowed down again to Rescue Mode, selecting it
    1. Then I just selected the following questions, like territory, keymap, netowork, timezone... with the default offered options (just pressed enter) as those won't really matter
    2. When I was prompted to select the recue

Ubuntu 20.04 no longer boots, connects to internet after bad shutdown

Copying this post from r/linuxquestions (https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/rdd4zu/ubuntu_2004_no_longer_boots_connects_to_internet/) - so it is a duplicate question, but has not been answered.

Hi r/linux4noobs, I'm having an issue with a Ubuntu desktop following a bad shutdown. My current best guess is the root file system is corrupted/damaged in some way, but my goal here is to understand the fix better than I have in the past to hopefully make this easier going forward. I'm pretty new to this, so please bear with me. I posted originally to AskUbuntu, but I'm afraid it just got buried.

The Question: how do I repair my Ubuntu install so I can get back to the desktop and connect to the internet again?

The Problem:

My Ubuntu workstation was frozen, so I used the power button to shut it down.

Next time I booted, it displays this message and remains on a black screen with nothing but this message: /dev/sdb1: clean, 215539/15237120 files, 3398675/60918272 blocks

From here (using some other answers I found on this forum, such as Booting problem after upgrade, /dev/sda2 clean) I managed to login to the command line (no desktop) with Alt+F1 or Alt+F2 (is there a difference?).

All the suggestions in the threads I found involved updating or reinstalling certain packages (note: I'm using Intel onboard graphics, not a Nvidia GPU. And the integrated graphics was working just fine prior to this, there have been no hardware changes whatsoever), but I am now having an internet connection issue where the machine is unable to connect and just gives a bunch of "Temporary failure in name resolution" errors.

I can replicate this with ping google.com, which returns the error message ping: google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution.

One thing I've tried was editing my /etc/resolv.conf file and adding the line nameserver 8.8.8.8
following the instructions here: https://www.tecmint.com/resolve-temporary-failure-in-name-resolution/ . Not only did this not work, but after a reboot the file reverted to what it was before. I suspect I'm misunderstanding what this file is/what it does/where it comes from.

I'm completely at a loss here: I'm unable to

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
