Did Chevy Chase really come back for that one cameo? Or was that filmed before the whole Harmon/Chase feud. Because I can't imagine Chevy would've came back, even for a cameo, after what went down. Nor would they want him back on set, lol
I just rewatched S5 E1: Repilot. I remember watching this episode for the first time and not thinking any more of it. It just seemed like a way for Dna Harmon to show he has his show back and make fun of the gas leak year while reorienting everyone back at Greendale. But upon my third rewatch, knowing full well where the rest of the series was headed, I could really appreciate it for being a mirror of the original pilot with a darker and more realist tone and approach. When Jeff hits Alan with his own tie you could just feel the rage he is feeling in that moment and that line, saying something along the lines of "here's for wasting four years of my life and the lives of the people I care most about". I love how the group backed him up in the lawsuit because they trusted him blindly, even knowing that he had tried manipulating them to turn against Greendale. It shows how the group has grown together na dhow much they STILL see Jeff as their leader. And I absolutely love how the Dean is finally confronted about making his job. Jeff confronting the Dean about this and giving him a reality check - telling him his job isn't to hand out degrees but to make this school better - was the best part of the episode for me.
Sure, seasons 2 and 3 were fun and pure joy to watch and will forever have a special place in my heart. But seasons 5 and 6 took on a natural path, being more realistic, more grounded, while still maintaining everything about Community that made it what it is. The characters spent four years at community college and then went out and faced the real world and it wasn't at all what they hoped for. Now they're back and the show doesn't try to keep everything going as it once did, recycling the same old character arcs and tropes. Instead, it takes stock of where its characters are at and starts them on a new path. The earlier Greendale was fun. But Greendale has to grow up and start becoming "a toilet people care about".
What do you guys think of this episode? I know it's not a fan favourite but I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts.
In season five episode one , Dave Franco makes a cameo which I find sweet cuz alison and dave were dating at the time, now married.

Near the beginning of the episode Abed is talking about how Scrubs rebooted for a ninth season. He says that during this season, one of the main actors only stayed for 6 episodes. Troy yells “Son of a bitch, after all Scrubs did for him?”
Thought it was funny how Troy says this and ends up doing the same thing this season. This show is so much fun to rewatch, I always catch things I never saw before.
So. Let's talk season five everyone!
I very much enjoyed the two episodes, but what I found most interesting about Repilot was the setting they chose. There was so much hype surrounding Harmon's return, and he both chose something old (the study room) as the main setting for the episode, but also did something a bit newer, or at least less used. It was night time. Enough could be said about them having to clean the room out, but I felt that was the stronger element of "difference" between the status quo of a study room scene, and what we got.
I'll get into it a bit more in the next episode discussion, because I want to leave this topic talking about this episode, just in case you only managed to catch the first one.
Let's go Greendale!
So I just watched repilot for the first time in a long while. While I think the episode is strong, so many things it sets up are never resolved. Abed wanting to learn how to work with people (a very key ability needed in film making), Chang being a Math teacher and under Greendale house arrest, Annie and Britta working towards their majors, and Shirley and her Husband's problems. It was a really dark episode (literally and figuratively) but I think it did a great job of re-establishing who these characters are and what their new goals are... it's just such a shame it feels like they never followed through on any of it. We hardly even get to see Jeff teaching after two seasons. I saw so much potential that this episode set up and seasons 5 and 6 wasted. Heck I kind of liked the idea that maybe Greendale should be sued and destroyed. The show isn't by any means terrible, but I feel like the problems it has now wouldn't have happened if the show stayed on the trajectory that repilot set it on. What do you guys think?
On the Dutch Comedy Central season 5 of Community is currently being aired. Being a fan of the show, I'd already downloaded (sorry) all the episodes right after, but I was watching Repilot with a friend and during the Pierce cameo (thanks Dan and Chevy), where previously Jeff could only be seen mouthing "unbelievable", he can now be heard saying it. It's a minor difference, but I just thought I'd post it here.
Re-pilot time! Don't worry, season 4 was just a gas leak year.

Thinking he is there to help save the school, he quickly calls the study group back together - surprising Jeff with a reunion.

Allow me to present a theory on how they could relaunch Happy Endings given where they left the series and what all of the actors are currently up to.
Season 4, Episode 1: Alex and Dave finally got married! The episode opens with the gang all together at the airport seeing the newlyweds off. For their honeymoon Dave has insisted that he and Alex go explore his Cherokee roots for an undetermined amount of time. (This allows Zachary and Elisha to pursue their current projects but keeps the door open for their return at any point.) The six friends talk about what's been going on the past two years, and we are treated to some flashbacks of the wedding (Max made out with the priest! During the ceremony!) and other adventures (Dave was run over by his own food truck giving him a big insurance payoff). The scene ends with Dave and Alex boarding the plane in slow motion while sentimental music plays and the camera cuts back and forth to the characters looking at each other with bittersweet emotions except for Max who is stuffing his face with a giant "Barry Bond's CinnaBon-Bon" that was introduced in an earlier joke.
After A&D board, Brad remarks that they should probably go since the TSA will be here any minute. A cop is seen headed their way riding one of those airport golf carts. The four remaining characters start to run away while Jane yells that she told them they should have just said goodbye outside instead of sneaking through security. Out of breath even though he's only run a few steps, Max replies with something about sticking it to "The Man." The scene ends with the comically slow security cart rolling by in hot pursuit.
In the next scene, Brad, Jane, Max, and Penny are at Rosalita's talking about how they narrowly escaped arrest. Penny tells everyone that now that Dave and Alex are gone she can finally introduce them to her new boyfriend. "Oh here he is now. Guys, meet Rick!" Rick waves. Brad: "Rick Rickman? Dave's old psychiatrist?" (Who was played by Ken Marino, currently starring in "Merry Me" with Casey Wilson). Rick explains that Dave was never technically his patient because he only ever paid Rick with vintage Bulls trading cards. Penny explains that she always liked Rick, but she didn't want to hurt Dave's feelings. Now that Dave's gone she and Rick can start dating again. Max says he's not crazy about betraying Dave's trust, but Rick is at least better than the last guy she was with. Cut to Penny makin

Then Troy leaves for good after only 5 eps into the season. What a brilliant call-forward joke
So I just finished watching Repilot, but I still don't understand on what basis the entire group choose to re-enroll in Greendale? Is there a cohesive explanation at all? I'm going through something related in my own life and was kinda hoping the episode would give some insight as to how a bunch of people give a place another shot. Joke's on me for ever trusting TV to have some depth, I guess?
Firstly, I understand & appreciate how the group took responsibility for their failures and shortcomings. That was classy of them and the right way to go about things. But that did not mean they had to re-enroll into their old college - it's dumb, it's like trying the same thing over and over again & expecting different results.
One way I could see them trusting Greendale again was if they saw just how much Dean Pelton supported them and cared for the school. As the caring 'father-figure' of the school, it makes sense if a bunch of students re-enroll, trusting the Dean and subsequently the Dean's school, to look after them. But this was completely botched when, in the episode, it's revealed the Dean was just saving his own ass all along! (Which, by the way, I found to be completely out of character - Dean Pelton I took to be the most caring, selfless figure in the series, who compromised on his ego & inegrity repeatedly, took tough decisions, just so that the school & its students could get the most out of a crappy situation. And all while keeping a happy face.) When it turned out the Dean was just trying to keep his job, it meant that yes, Greendale HAS turned its back on its students. More so that it never really had their back in the first place! So why would the group ever enroll back into the college?
I'm talking about the song that starts as the table begins to burn. I was listening to is and I can't figure out if it's something made for the show or if it's a real song. I tried Shazam, but the clip is too short. Anyone know what song that is?
This makes me wonder if Starburns returns as a teacher also.
