Platform(s): PC
Genre: Real-time tactics
Estimated year of release: 1990-2005
Graphics/art style: Early 3D graphics, dark color palette, bird's eye view
Notable characters: An image keeps coming back to my mind of a unit that consisted of 3 dwarves that moved together and threw explosives
Notable gameplay mechanics: Explosions may have had an impact on the playing field, either creating small blast zones or lowering a small section of polygons
Other details: My mind may be mixing up Myth: The Fallen Lords with a unit from another game, but I cannot figure out what game had a unit of three dwarves that moved together and threw explosions. Was there a copycat of Myth that had a darker color palette?
Just one more opinion.
While I never was an opponent of real time combat, I always found myself going the path of least resistance - my party members have very narrow specializations: meat shield, one-shot guy, ranged guy, auto-cast buff guy and so on. There's just so much to do in short periods of time if you actually start using spells and abilities, it leaves me exhausted. So I prefer setting up AI as detailed as possible and win fights either through positioning, maneuvering, alpha strikes or brute force. In other words, I play RTS.
Games with turn-based combat on the other hand allow me to be more versatile and creative. It's like playing chess, you can always sit back and look over the situation, make small maneuvers or use clutch abilities that decide battles, employ clever tactics. Sure, you can do that in real time with pause, but it becomes a game of clicking space button. Why do that manually when you can have turns?
I think when update comes out I will finally try out all-magic party. What do you guys think?
Edit: absolutely not related, but I couldn't get into Pathfinder Kingmaker because it felt like it left all crunchiness of tabletop in game, but took away time to think. So, every turn still matters, but they go by at rapid pace.
Wouldn't it be great to have a tactical game similar to Shadow Tactics/Desperados/Commandos but in the Star Wars universe? Not only would it bring casual players to the more 'thinking' game, but SW would work as a stealth team infiltration game (force manipulation, rescue missions, etc.). There are lots of licensed characters from different eras. Currently Commandos remaster and Desperados 3 are under development so this genre of games is apparantly coming back.
Probably I should start by saying that generally I do not play strategy games, which makes it both more difficult and easier to put in suggestions. On the one hand I will probably find it hard to get into the complex titles, on the other hand chances are slim youβd recommend something Iβve already played.
My question is triggered because once upon a time I enjoyed Shadow Company: left for dead. Really oozed that special ops vibe for me. Havenβt found anything similar since.
Looking for:
I own both a PC and a PS4.
Thank you for any ideas and suggestions!
Just found this on steam:

I'm not the dev nor connected to the game in any way.
It's just a game of the first blog entry on this neat blog I found:

Hi all,
I just released a major update to the game that I've been working on for quite a while.
Screenshots, video, and download for Windows/Linux/Mac can be found here: https://www.indiedb.com/games/aether
GitHub page: https://github.com/Excarto/Aether
Aether is a 2D real time tactics game based on pure Newtonian physics. Fleets are constructed from 10 different ship hulls, which can be equipped with various specialized weapons, sensors, fighters, and other systems.
The player has intricate control over various ship systems, power management, repairing, etc. But the most important aspect of the game is managing the momentum and positions of the units to gain a situational advantage. The units do not have any maximum speed, and there is no fixed frame of reference.
It has computer opponents and networked multiplayer.
Hey so i know this game exists cause i saw a entire playthrough of it on Youtube
Platform(s): PC
Genre: Tactics / Real Time Tactics (kinda like Xcom)
Estimated year of release: Looked like a mid 2000s or early 2000s
Graphics/art style: Kinda realistic (for the time) like 3d modeled sprites? Not sure how to describe that particular style. Definitely wasnt cartoony. Isometric, remember a lot of brown and red. Definitely gritty.
Notable characters:
Notable gameplay mechanics: Your Squad could go up to 4 members maybe 6 Had RPG system where you add points to help specialize characters ( I could be imagining that one )
None in particular
Other details: I feel like it was Polish but definetly Eastern European game had a aroma of jank to it. Enemies were cultists and flesh monsters. Your goal was to stop the city from being consumed as the flesh or whatever the bio substance was from taking over the city (and then the world of course )
Yeah ive had that sitting in my brain for a while now and i totally forgot what the name was . Hope you guys can help
(Edit: because it seems incredibly difficult to attach this to any RTS game, it is entirely likely I'm misremembering it and it's actually some other kind of game. So if the description of the cover or add seems familiar and its not a strategy game or its a FPS or whatever, PLEASE do throw that at me. Anything may help)
I'm certain, completely certain, this game was a PC title. The fact is I have rarely seen these kinds of games ported to consoles of any kind and so I am literally certain that this game was a PC game. I'm also fairly certain this game came out sometime in the early to mid 2000s--if memory serves it was either around or during the first Obama administration, I believe anyway. So I would place the estimated year of release between 2005 and 2012.
The genre is a little more weird to put down. I talked about this game with some other people before and someone was telling me it may not necessarily have been an RTS--but boy did it look like one to me. I would bet money the game was a "real time tactics" game like Ground Control or Uprising, but I played those so I know what they are, this one was different at least in appearance.
All I ever saw of the game was an ad in a magazine. It had a pic of what I assume was an alien, a kind of bloated-looking humanoid face with its mouth open howling, wearing if I recall a helmet of some kind. Below this was the image of some vehicles shooting, mostly wheeled tank-like machines, the alien ones clearly made of some kind of organic material. I believe there was some kind of air craft shooting down as well. And the title was next to or beneath the howling alien head. I can't recall any characters mentioned and given the time of game I doubt they had any per se, but I do recall the plot to a degree because I read it, I think in the ad but maybe in a review in the magazine.
The game explained some alien race had invaded and conquered the Earth, and humans had fled to Mars. I'm almost certain that it was Mars, but I AM certain it was fled somewhere after Earth had been conquered. And then, the aliens come back and attack us again, and the humans had to fight back. As for the gameplay I am pretty sure it was an RTS type game. I believe it was a game in the same family like I said as Ground Control or Uprising, not a game like say Dark Reign where you have this top-down view, but again I've never seen the actual game itself so I wouldn't know. I'm basing this mainly on the era the game emerged from and the app

I have just released a PC demo on indieDB.
In the game you control a team of 5 mercenaries all with different equipment and weapons. You board an infested spaceship.
The Idea is to get your soldiers from one side of the map to the other, fighting along the way. There are lots of enemy Bugs, Dross, in the way. Fortunately you have a lot of powerful weapons to help you fight them.
Theres a progression system where you upgrade your soldiers between levels and it gets increasingly tougher as you play. I have spent a long time working on this, so please check it out!
Think XCom but real-time, or SpaceHulk, but not a board game.
